WHAT IS SHOULD?
SHOULD
• Should is used to express mild obligation and advice.
SHOULD

SHOULD + PRESENT
Functions:
1. To give advice, suggestion, recommendation. It means we say the
right/correct thing to do. Example: You are too fat, you should go on diet.
2. To express obligation. But it is not as strong as “must”. Example: You
should pay attention to the teacher’s explanation.
3. To express situation likely in the present. Example: Andi should be at
home, meet him now!
4. To predict situation in the future. Example: You have checked in the
doctor. You should be fine tomorrow.
Note: Should not (Shouldn’t)  To advise someone not to do something
because it is bad/wrong. Example: You should not cheat in the exam.
RUMUS:

(-) Subject + should + not + Verb 1
(?) Should + Subject + Verb 1 + ?
Examples:
(+) I should go.
(-) They should not litter here.
(?) Should you have breakfast in your bedroom?

SHOULD + CONTINUOUS
Function: To express the idea that the person (subject) is not fulfilling
their obligation/is not acting sensibly (berbuat seharusnya).
Example: You should be studying math now. Tomorrow we will have a
quiz.
RUMUS:

(-) S + Should + not + be + Verb-ing
(?) Should + S + be + Verb-ing
Examples:
(+) He should be taking a bath now.
(-) This is a library. So, you should not be speaking too loud
here.
(?) Should we be watching TV while waiting for mom to come
home?
SHOULD + PERFECT
Function:
• To express an action/idea that you didn’t fulfil the obligation in the
past.
• We expected something to happen but it didn’t happen.
Example:
You should have done your homework as soon as you remember it.
I should have called you when Ita asked me.
RUMUS:

(-) S + Should + not + have + Verb 3
Examples:
1. She should have done her homework.
2. It had been rainy yesterday. I shouldn’t have gone fishing!
