Never ask anyone to assign you a research topic because you don't have enough knowledge without reading in this domain. Therefore, this presentation provides all necessary steps to find out a research topic.

Research Topic

2. Agenda
– Initial Suggestions and commitment
– Procedure to find out the research topic
– Finding research article
– How to Find most recent article
– How to ensure, article is related to your topic
– How to ensure, the research quality
– How to ensure ISI journal
– How to find the exact topic (Five stages)
– Outcome
3. Initial Suggestions &
Commitments
– Maybe you know the better way about ‘finding research topic’, so
contribute and help others.
– Never ask to anyone to assign you the research topic because you
don’t have enough knowledge without reading in this domain
– Try and find out research topic yourself.
– I am committed to complete it with the help of ALLAH SWT.
4. Procedure to find out the Research
Topic
– Decide your sub-domain under your interesting subject/domain
i.e. Location Based Service (LBS) Systems under Networks.
– Read the relationship between core domain and sub-domain.
– Select any attribute to define scope and define your research
scope. i.e. Privacy
privacy provisioning in LBS Network systems.
5. Finding Research Article
– Google Scholar
– IEEE
– ACM
– Springer
– Sciencedirect
– Elsevier
– Citeseerx
Any many digital libraries.
Some of these are free but mostly are paid. So contact in your circle who have
the access.
6. Finding Research Article
– In case of google scholar
– https://scholar.google.com/
– Make query using keywords in search area as
“provisioning privacy + LBS Network Systems”
9. Ensure, article is related to your
topic
– Open the link and read
– Title
– Abstract (minimum 5 times or until you understand properly word by word)
– Conclusion (If available)
– Now, if you are sure the paper is very related to you, now move
toward its quality.
10. How to ensure, the research
quality
– before downloading make sure that the quality research work
– Normally, Institute for Scientific Information(ISI) Thomson ISI
journals don’t compromise on quality.
– Peer Review
– Reviewed by well known reviewers
– Reviewed by multiple reviewers
– Review process take minimum 2 Months.
11. Ensure ISI journal
– Is it ISI Journal?
– Web of Science (Current Name)
– Web of Knowledge (Old name)
– now maintained by Clarivate Analytics
– Web of Science contains Core categories
– Incite Journal Citation Report (JCR) contains only JCR list.
– (http://mjl.clarivate.com/) include all categories.
Web of Science (previously known as Web
of Knowledge) is an online subscription-
based scientific citation indexing service
originally produced by the Institute for
Scientific Information (ISI), now
maintained by Clarivate
Analytics (previously the Intellectual
Property and Science business
of Thomson Reuters[1]), that provides a
comprehensive citation search.
13. Find Out The Exact Research
Topic
– Stage-1
– Collect minimum 30 research articles related to defined scope. (both Research article and
Review article)
– Read the papers thoroughly including
– Title,
– Abstract
– Introduction
– Related Work
– Methodology
– Results
– conclusion
– Future work
– Write one page summery of each article.
14. Stage-2
– Select 15 from 30 research articles (but not review articles) that have
purely applied some methodology.
– Read, understand and compare the proposed solutions.
– What mechanism they used to solve this problem?
(Find in methodology section)
– What are the parameters the used in their methodology? (find in results and
discussion section)
– How strong is the proposed solution as compare to other approaches. (find in
results section)
– Make taxonomy of proposed approaches based on parameters and
features.
15. Stage-3
– Select top 5 research articles from stage 2 under one class.
– Consider that You are the co-author of these 5 papers.
– Understand everything in these papers.
– Understand the selected class in detail from other resources (Research
articles, Books etc.)
– Ask yourself (What and why) about selected class.
16. Stage-4
– Select top 2 research articles from stage 3, having same
mechanism.
– It couldn’t be happen that same work is published.
– One using base approach
– Second one use enhanced version of same approach.
– But the target is same.
– Ask yourself (What and why) about selected class.
– Consider yourself the author of these two papers. You must be
know the implementation completely.
– Apply Reverse engineering
17. Conclusion Stage
– Think gently and Note down the following points from last two
papers.
– What are the limitations?
– What is future work?
– Being an author, you know the proposed approach very clearly,
however think that how we can enhance the proposed approach?
(consider the parameters level)
– Consider toward hybrid approach.
– Implement other approach (from stage 2,3) using same parameters.
18. Outcome
– You may decide your exact topic by
– Fixing the limitations
– Working on future work plan.
– Improving existing model.
– Proposing a new hybrid approach if applicable.
– Implementing other approach (from stage 2,3) using same parameters.
– You already have done 80% work for a strong survey paper. Now
just format it according to journal/conference manuscript format.
19. OUTCOME
– And finally, one selection from above list is your topic.
– Hope now, you are on your track.
– Help others, ALLAH will help you.

Reverse engineering is finding out how a product works from the finished product. Re-engineering is to examine the finished product and build it again, but better.
