What is 5S and why do we want to do it?
5S
What ?
These are foundational for continuous improvement and a
manufacturing strategy based "Lean Manufacturing" concepts.
Why ?
 high levels of quality
 Safety
 Productivity
 Good working environment
5S Stands for
• Sort
• Set in Order
• Shine
• Standardize
• Sustain
SORT
• All unneeded tools, parts and supplies are removed from the
area.
• It has to be red tagged and keep it that particular separate
place.
SET IN ORDER
The process of arranging your workplace in a logical
way so that all necessary items are labelled and placed
in a location that will minimize wasted motion.
(Creating a specific location for everything)
PROBLEM IDENTIFIED IN INDUSTRY
• There is no proper workplace.
• Tools are not arranged in a proper set.
• The tools which is used and not used are placed in the same
place.
• Tools are on the machine.

PROPOSED SOLUTION
The unwanted thing had to be placed with the red tagged in a
separate place or recycled.
Tools and cleaning cloth should be arranged and kept in separate
container.
Tools, jigs, bits, etc. must be labelled. so that anyone can identify and
return them to their proper storage location.

ADVANTAGES
• Make it easy to find and pick up necessary items which takes only less time
to do.
• This leads to higher workstation efficiency, a fundamental goal in mass
production.
• The operators may minimize the accidents & mistakes.
• Make workflow smooth and easy.
• One must locate the item with in 30 second.
