The whole class starts on the Green Level - however Prep screening, and
ability noted during activities, will show which are likely to be moving
faster than others.
Each child can be working at a different level. So you might start with a
whole class activity, but then have separate activities for each level. TAs
would be used to help move children from green as quickly as that child is
able. They will see the skills children are struggling with, and cater for this
(eg blending, phonemic awareness...)
Folders are important as they
enable parents to support this explicit
teaching at home, and enable anyone
helping in the classroom to help each
child, with no prior knowledge of that child.

Children have their sound pics and sound pic words in SSP folders that can go home
each night, with phonics readers. Order these cards from readaustralia.com/orders.htm
Organisation
• Children should know the level they are on. Anyone with a few
  minutes to spare can either ask the child to bring their folder, or
  you need 4 boxes in the classroom – Green, Purple, Yellow, Blue –
  to work with them.
   In each box have the appropriate sound pics, sound pic words
   (words created using only their sound pics) helpful words,
   sentences using only those helpful words and sound pics, readers
   that only have those sound pics, RWI cards for letter formation
   prompts and for blending practice after the Green Level.
   Having these boxes make Speedy SSP Sessions far easier.
   Just grab a box and find 4 or 5 children at the same level for a 10 –
   15 minute Speedy SSP Session whenever possible!

  teach the phonemes in a
  jumbled order (and doesn’t
  allow for differentiation) you
  can use the free whiteboard
  lessons, created to teach the
  mandated phonemes using
  the SSP Approach.
   This also means that you can
   easily see where these
   phonemes are located, within
   the SSP Levels, and take out
   the related RWI cards and
   readers.

Point to a word, and ask the children to work out the sound pic for a
speech sound in that word. When ready, the children are just asked
to find sound pics for certain speech sounds because they can work
         out the words themselves. Record on white boards.

                                                 cloud for that speech sound)

So as children progress through they realise that the picture may be different….which
is half the fun ! So the teacher may ask them to close their eyes and visualise a sound pic
for ‘sss’ (for example) and then ask them to think of ALL of the sound pics they can ‘see’ in
their minds. Keep your eyes closed and choose one – I wonder if it is the one I am holding!
Open eyes- see the sound pic- quick look at all others.
When ready, also ask then to visual a whole word- then show it to them

Children need to practice forming the 26 letters of the alphabet in Prep regardless of level
– please use the phrase and character cards daily as this helps develop symbol imagery etc
                  You may practice a – f on Monday, g – l on Tuesday etc.
You can call them by their name if you wish- talking about the fact that these have a name -
however stressing that this is just a label. What matters most , to shape reading and spelling
                        brain, is the speech sound to sound pic link.

Focus on SSP Green Level (Speech Sound Pics Approach)

  • 1. The whole class starts on the Green Level - however Prep screening, and ability noted during activities, will show which are likely to be moving faster than others. Each child can be working at a different level. So you might start with a whole class activity, but then have separate activities for each level. TAs would be used to help move children from green as quickly as that child is able. They will see the skills children are struggling with, and cater for this (eg blending, phonemic awareness...) Folders are important as they enable parents to support this explicit teaching at home, and enable anyone helping in the classroom to help each child, with no prior knowledge of that child.

Order for Explicit Teaching of the Phonemes (Speech Sound Pics) within the SSP Approach RWI phonics flashcards used to teach and reinforce the sound pics – approx $12 per pack Children have their sound pics and sound pic words in SSP folders that can go home each night, with phonics readers. Order these cards from readaustralia.com/orders.htm
  • 4. Organisation • Children should know the level they are on. Anyone with a few minutes to spare can either ask the child to bring their folder, or you need 4 boxes in the classroom – Green, Purple, Yellow, Blue – to work with them. In each box have the appropriate sound pics, sound pic words (words created using only their sound pics) helpful words, sentences using only those helpful words and sound pics, readers that only have those sound pics, RWI cards for letter formation prompts and for blending practice after the Green Level. Having these boxes make Speedy SSP Sessions far easier. Just grab a box and find 4 or 5 children at the same level for a 10 – 15 minute Speedy SSP Session whenever possible!

SSP with C2C • Even though C2C asks you to teach the phonemes in a jumbled order (and doesn’t allow for differentiation) you can use the free whiteboard lessons, created to teach the mandated phonemes using the SSP Approach. This also means that you can easily see where these phonemes are located, within the SSP Levels, and take out the related RWI cards and readers.

  • 10. Point to a word, and ask the children to work out the sound pic for a speech sound in that word. When ready, the children are just asked to find sound pics for certain speech sounds because they can work out the words themselves. Teacher finishes off by asking the children to close their eyes and visualise a sound pic for ….(depends on level) She then holds up a sound pic for that speech sound. Is this what you could see? What else could it have looked like? (show cloud for that speech sound) So as children progress through they realise that the picture may be different….which is half the fun ! So the teacher may ask them to close their eyes and visualise a sound pic for ‘sss’ (for example) and then ask them to think of ALL of the sound pics they can ‘see’ in their minds. Keep your eyes closed and choose one – I wonder if it is the one I am holding! Open eyes- see the sound pic- quick look at all others. When ready, also ask then to visual a whole word- then show it to them

Children need to practice forming the 26 letters of the alphabet in Prep regardless of level – please use the phrase and character cards daily as this helps develop symbol imagery etc You may practice a – f on Monday, g – l on Tuesday etc. You can call them by their name if you wish- talking about the fact that these have a name - however stressing that this is just a label.
