3. Introduction
Swachh Bharat Abhiyan is intended at accelerating
the efforts to achieve universal sanitation coverage.
It aims at achieving Open Defecation Free (ODF)
nation and a Swachh Bharat (Clean India) by 2nd
Oct, 2019, the 150th anniversary of Mahatma
Gandhi.
Swachh Bharat Abhiyan is being implemented by
the Ministry of Urban Development in Urban
areas and by the Ministry of Drinking Water and
Sanitation in Rural areas.
4. Objectives
Elimination of open defecation
Eradication of Manual Scavenging
Modern and Scientific Municipal Solid Waste
Management
To effect behavioral change regarding healthy sanitation
practices
Generate awareness about sanitation and its linkage
with public health
Creating an enabling environment for private sector
participation.
5. Public awareness
Bring about a behavioral change in people.
Generating awareness among citizens.
Strengthening of urban local bodies to fulfill these
objectives.

6. Findings of the SBA
Sanitation coverage : 39% to 85% in rural areas.
4.9 Crores household toilets and over 4 lakh school
toilets (mainly funded by PSUs) constructed.
7. Findings of the SBA
States of Sikkim, Himachal Pradesh, Kerala,
Haryana, and Uttarakhand have been declared
ODF.
207 districts and more than 2.5 lakh villages have
been declared as ODF.
10 states to be ODF by March 2018, on track for
ODF India by Oct,2019.
