18. Lesson Objectives:
At the end of this lesson, you are expected to:
• identify different types of Sewing Machine,
• describe the different types of sewing
machine,
• identify the different parts of Lockstitch
Sewing machine,
• classify each part, and
• analyze the importance of having
knowledge of the basic parts of the sewing
machine.
19. SEWING MACHINE – used to stitch fabric and
other materials together with thread to form a
garment.
Different types of sewing Machine
1. Treadle sewing Machine
2. High-speed lockstitch Machine
3. Computer-controlled high-speed lockstitch Machine
4. Overlock Machine
5. Embroidery Machine
6. Buttonholer Machine
7. Button-attaching Machine
8. Bartacking Machine
9. Handheld sewing Machine
20. Treadle Sewing Machine –
lockstitch sewing Machine operated
by foot. It can either be Pedal-
driven or Motor-driven
21. High-speed Lockstitch
Machine – is a self-oiling
lockstitch machine used in clothing
industries. It has oiler tank where
the oil is restored under its bed. It
works faster and less tiring.
23. Overlock Machine – is also
called over-edging machine. This
type of sewing machine is used to
finish seam edges. It comes in two
to four threads and equipped with a
cutter that trims edges.
24. Embroidery
Machine – is commonly
seen in the fashion
industry and used to
decorate garments.
25. Buttonwholer
Machine – is ideal to sew
buttonholes of different
stitches. It is excellent for
sewing pants, jeans, and
jackets for both ladies and
men.
27. Bartacking Machine –
is an industrial machine used
to strengthen parts of the
garments such as the opening
and closing of pockets and
plackets.
28. Handheld Sewing
Machine – is a stapler type
of sewing machine that is very
handy to carry around. It is
used for minor sewing needs
such as sewing seams and
hemlines.
29. Knowledge of the basic parts of the sewing machine is
important to operate it easily and produce quality output.
Moreover, understanding the function of each sewing
machine parts could help in troubleshooting in case
sewing machine problem arise.

31. Spool pin – is the part that holds the spool of thread in place.
Thread guide – holds the upper thread in place from the spool to the needle.
Thread take-up lever – is a lever that moves the thread up and down to form
and tighten stiches.
Tension regulator – is a round, metal plate where the thread is passed and
regulated by tightening and loosing to create a perfect stitch.
Face plate – is a .part that gives access to the oiling points on the needle bar,
presser bar, and the thread-up lever
32. Presser foot – holds the material in place while running the sewing machine.
Presser bar – holds the presser foot.
Presser bar lifter – is a lever attached to the presser bar used to raise and
lower the presser foot.
Needle clamp – is a screw to keep the needle in place in the needle bar.
Needle bar – is a vertical bar to which the needle is attached.
Needle – instrument that carries the upper thread through the fabric to
complete the stitch.
33. Feed dog – situated directly underneath the presser foot and throat plate,
moving the cloth forward while sewing.
Throat plate – is the plate directly under the presser foot through which the
needle passes.
Slide plate – is a flat that provides access to the bobbin case and other parts of
the lower thread mechanism without lifting the sewing machine.
Bobbin winder – mechanism used to wind the thread on the bobbin.
Stitch regulator – controls the length of the stiches.
34. Balance wheel – is located at the right of the head, driven by the belt. This can
be used to manually move the needle un and down.
Bobbin case – holds the bobbin and contains mechanism that controls the
tension of the lower thread.
Bobbin – holds the lower thread.
Treadle – drives the band wheel when operated by the feet
In the case of pedal-driven machine.
Foot controller– controls the speed of the sewing machine.
37. Back stitch – Make one
running stitch, then take a back
stitch to the beginning of the
first stitch, thus overlapping
each running stitch. This stitch
resembles machine stitching
and is used to strengthen a
seam made by hand.
Basting – Basting is a quite
important in successful sewing.
This is used to hold fabric
temporarily in place, until
permanently stitched. There
are four types of basting; Hand
basting, Machine basting, Pin
basting, and Basting edges
with an iron.
38. Running Stitch – To make
this stich push point of the
needle in and out of fabric until
you have several stitches on
the needle. Hold fabric with left
hand, and full the needle
through.
Outline Stitch – This stitch is
similar to the back stitch but it
is slanted. Make one slanted
backstitch in front of another
letting each one overlap the
one before it just a little bit,
until the design is filled.
39. Blanket Stitch – Put your
needle in ¼ inch from the edge
of the fabric, put the thread
under the point of the needle
and pull through.
Catch stitch – This is used
for a flat finish next to fabric,
such as seam binding on a
hem. Hold open hem edge
away from you. Working from
left to right.
