Exports
Cotton plays an important role in the
Indian economy as the country's textile
industry is predominantly cotton based.
India is one of the largest producers as well
as exporters of cotton yarn. The textile
industry is also expected to reach US$ 223
billion by the year 2021. The states of
Gujarat, Maharashtra, Telangana, Andhra
Pradesh, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh,
Haryana, Rajasthan, and Punjab are the
major cotton producers in India

In 2017-18, India’s cotton production was
34.86 million bales of 170 Kgs. each.
Cotton yarn and fabrics exports accounts for
about 23 per cent of India’s total textiles
and apparel exports.
Between Apr-Oct 2018, total textile and
clothing exports stood at Rs 1.52 trillion
(US$ 21.95 billion).
Between Apr-Oct 2018, exports of cotton
raw including waste, cotton yarn, cotton
fabrics and cotton made-ups grew by 26.01
per cent year-on-year to US$ 6,893.05
million from US$ 5,470.20 million during the
same period last year.
7. Silk Industry And Export
With sericulture activities spread across
52,360 villages, the Indian silk industry is
one of the largest generators of
employment and foreign exchange for the
country. India enjoys a unique global
position in terms of production of all
commercially useful varieties of silk. India
is the second largest producer of silk.

8.6 million people in India during 2017- 18

Exports of silk and silk products from India
reached US$ 255.93 million in 2017-18 and
US$ 123.05 million between Apr-Sep 2018.
The silk products exported include natural
silk yarns, fabrics, made-ups, readymade
garments, silk carpets and silk waste.
In FY 2017-18 top five importers of silk
carpet were US (US$ 1.40 million), UAE (US$
0.95 million), Belgium (US$ 0.13 million),
Germany (US$ 0.04 million) and Italy (US$
0.03 million)
Exports of silk waste stood at US$ 15.69
million in 2017-18.
9. Leather Industry And
Exports
Leather is one of the most widely traded
commodities globally. The growth in
demand for leather is driven by the fashion
industry, especially footwear. Apart from
this, furniture and interior design industries,
as well as the automotive industry also
demand leather. The leather industry has a
place of prominence in the Indian economy
due to substantial export earnings and
growth. The Indian leather industry
accounts for around 12.93 per cent of the
world’s leather production of hides/skins

Total leather good exports from India stood
at US$ 3.05 billion during April-October
2018.
During April-October 2018, the major
markets for Indian leather products were US
(16.73 per cent), Germany (12.31 per cent),
UK (11.41 per cent), Italy (7.48 per cent),
and France (5.54 per cent.
During April-October 2018, exported
products include leather footwear
component (US$ 196 million), leather
garments (US$ 295.06 million), finished
leather exports (US$ 466.76 million), leather
footwear (US$ 1,293.20 million) and leather
goods (US$ 799.47 million)
11. Synthetic And Rayon
Textiles
Today, India is one of the world’s leading
manufacturers of man-made textiles.
Indian fabrics are known for their excellent
workmanship, colours and durability. Due
to heavy investments in world- class
manufacturing plants, continuous
innovation, new product mix and strategic
market expansion, Indian man-made fibres
(MMF) are set to take centre stage in the
global arena. Textile industry contributes
two per cent to India’s GDP, seven per cent
to India’s industrial production and 15 per
cent to the country’s exports

Technical Textile Industry was estimated at
Rs 1.16 trillion (US$ 18.03 billion) in 2017-
18.
Between Apr-Sep 2018, export of manmade
staple fibre increased 2.68 per cent year-
on- year to Rs 2,060.46 crore (US$ 293.60
million); manmade yarn, fabrics and
madeups exports increased 11.41 per cent
to 17,219.82 crore (US$ 2.45 billion) and
exports of readymade garments of
manmade fibres reached Rs 129.65 billion
(US$ 1.85 billion) in the same period.
The textile and apparel exports stood at Rs
1.2 lakh crore (US$ 35.36 billion) in 2017-
18.
13. Wool Industry And Exports
India’s wool and woollen textile industry is
the seventh-largest in the world. India’s
wool and woollen industry can broadly be
divided into 10 major product categories:
worsted yarn, woollen yarn, wool tops,
fabric, shoddy yarn, shoddy fabrics,
blankets, knitwear, hand-made carpets
and machine-made carpets. The Wool &
Woollens Export Promotion Council
(WWEPC) participates in various
international trade fairs and exhibitions,
and facilitates member visits and trade
delegations

15. Wool And Woolen Textile
Exports
India is the seventh-largest producer of
wool in the world with a global production
share of nearly 1.8 per cent. India’s wool
consumption is expected to reach 260
million kg by 2019–20. The wool industry is
concentrated in Punjab, Haryana,
Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra and
Gujarat. Punjab accounts for about 35 per
cent of wool production units, followed by
Maharashtra and Rajasthan

The US and the EU are key export
destinations for Indian wool and wool-
blended products. Indian exporters are
geographically diversifying their exports to
other regions such as the Middle East, Latin
America, South East Asia, and East Asia to
increase their footprint globally.
In 2017-18 exports of woollen yarn, fabrics,
and made ups was valued at US$ 185.96
million exports of raw wool stood at US$
766,187. Between Apr-Oct 2018, exports of
woollen yarn, fabrics, and made ups has
reached US$ 120.36 million and raw wool
exports have reached US$ 838,459.
17. APPAREL INDUSTRY
IN INDIA
Indian textiles and apparel have a history of fine
craftsmanship and global appeal. Cotton, silk and
denim from India are highly popular abroad and
with the upsurge in Indian design talent, Indian
apparel too has found success in the fashion
