2. WHO IS AN ARCHITECT ?
● An architect is a person who plans, designs and
oversees the construction of buildings.
● To practice architecture means to provide services
in connection with the design of buildings and the
space within the site surrounding the buildings that
have human occupancy or use as their principal
purpose.
● The architect, once hired by a client, is responsible
for creating a design concept that both meets the
requirements of that client and provides a facility
suitable to the required use.

4. PRELIMINARY DESIGN STAGE
● This is a discussion based on the project and its requirement also about the
budget and lifestyle of the project.
● Then they proceed to analyse the site and its feature that can be used
directly in there design.
● So that they can conceptualize there idea and overall basic circulation over
the site.
5. DESIGN DEVELOPMENT STAGE
● The sketches evolves to drawing
● The concepts are made in scale and tries to implement the concept directly
over the plan.
● These include parkings and other services and also materials to be used.
● This is the most crucial part of the process
6. PLANNING APPROVAL STAGE
● The drawings are done and approved by authorities to construct
● The drawing must include the site plan, floor plans, sections, elevations and
the construction details.
7. TENDER AND CONSTRUCTION DRAWING STAGE

8. CONSTRUCTION STAGE
An architect produces detailed drawing and specifications of the project to be
used for construction. Once completed, the construction documents will be
provided to a potential contractor.

But normally, the architect will assist the contractor to construct the project as
specified in the construction.
9. COMPLETION OF CONSTRUCTION

10. DEFECT LIABILITY PERIOD STAGE
● Stretches over 24 months from the date of practical completion
● Issue of Architect’s Instruction to rectify defects

11. ARCHITECTURAL FIRM
An architectural firm or architecture firm is a company which employs one or
more licensed architects and practices the profession of architecture.
13. SENIOR PRINCIPAL / PARTNER
● In any architectural firm, the person who is placed at the topmost level is the partner or the
senior principal.
● The partner or senior principal is the owner or main shareholder in the firm and may also hold
the title of the partner, president or chief executive officer.
● He/she is the individual who holds the supreme decision making abilities and also the
maximum responsibility.
● It is he who takes all the final calls for the betterment of the firm.
14. MID LEVEL PRINCIPAL / PARTNER
● In the hierarchical order of an architectural company is the position of the partner or the mid-
level principal.
● This is the individual who holds an important position in the company and works directly
under the senior principal.
● In some of the architectural companies across the world, some other names which are used to
denote partners or mid-level principals are executive or senior vice president.
● The partner too takes part in the decision making processes along with the senior principal.
15. JUNIOR PRINCIPAL / PARTNER
● After the mid level principal position in the architectural company, comes the position of the
junior principal.
● He/she too may also be known as the partner, depending upon whether or not he/she is a
stakeholder in the firm.
● The junior principal is usually the newest partner or one who holds minimum percentage of
profits in the firm.
16. DEPARTMENT HEAD / SENIOR ARCHITECT
● The position of the senior manager or department head comes next in line.
● He/she is mainly responsible for seeing to it that all major operations and functions within
the office space are carried on in order and with proper management.
● He/she must possess good managerial abilities and must perform supervisory tasks.
17. PROJECT MANAGER
● The project manager or project management department must head projects and see to
it that the budgeting, scheduling and operations go in sync.
● He/she must meet with the client and form a channel between the architects and the client.
18. SENIOR ARCHITECT / DESIGNER
● The senior architect or designer is the licensed and qualified professional who forms the core
of any architectural company and performs the main tasks.
● He/she must have and holds about 8 years of experience and must be responsible for
selection, evaluation and implementation procedures.
19. ARCHITECT / DESIGNER
● Below the position of the senior architect comes the position of the architect or designer.
● These individuals must perform core designing tasks for the clients or the firm and should
work as per the instructions of the project heads and senior designers.
20. INTERNS
● At the bottom of the hierarchical order are the interns who are unregistered or still graduating
architecture students who work as trainees in the firm.
● They may handle day to day tasks and assist designers in their duties.

The social responsibility of architects lies in part in believing that architecture can create better
places, that architecture can affect society, and that it can even have a role in making a place
civilized by making a community more livable.
