9. TYPE 1: PEOPLE
Topic 1:
Describe a famous person whom you admire
You should say:
Who the person is
Why he/ she is famous
Why you admire this person
What you would do if you met this person
ANSWER:
I guess I could begin by saying something about who the person is and I think I
would have to choose the King of Pop, Michael Jackson, from the USA. I’m sure
millions of people around the world loved him.
Going on to my next point which is why he is famous, I really need to add that he
was a world-renowned pop star as well as an originator of many wonderful dance
steps, particularly his famous “moon walk” style. In fact, he was probably the first
black American singer to achieve great success around the world. Furthermore, he
was also well-known because of scandals such as changing his skin color or his
controversial marriages. Although he was passed away, people around the globe
will always remember him as an icon of the music world and his songs will be
immortal.
And now with reference to why I admire him, and the point I want to make
here is that he had a strong will, along with his unfailing (constant) effort to
overcome the racism which was the worst obstacle to recognition of his talent in
the USA. Moreover, his music and performance of it was highly creative and
original, rather than copycat style.
And so finally then, if I have time in answer the question of what I would like
to do if I met him, I would probably ask him to teach me a few of his special
10. dance steps and I would possibly invite him to my hometown to enjoy some local
cuisine.
11. Topic 2:
Describe a character from a story/ film/ tv program
You should say:
Who the character is
When you first saw or heard this story/ film or tv program
What kind of person this character is
Why you liked this character
ANSWER:
Of course, I should begin by telling you who this person is and I’ve chosen
Sherlock Holmes as the most fascinating fictional character to discuss.
Continuing to the next point, about when I initially encountered this
protagonist, I was approximately 12 years old. I took in how much my mother
enjoyed her Treasury of Conan stories, so I inquired of her to find out what was so
captivating in those stories.
As I learned from her description, and later from my own reading, Holmes
was a legendary, but good-natured figure around Scotland Yard, the London
detective service. His status was achieved as a result of his extraordinarily acute
powers of observation and deductive analysis and fully integrated synthesis of
every piece of evidence that came within his view.
Finally, with reference to the reason that I love the character of Sherlock
Holmes, it would have to be based upon the reality that he is one of only a
handful (one of only a few) of heroes in English literature whose exploits are based
upon.
12. Topic 3:
Describe an old person who has influenced you
You should say:
Who the person is
How you know this person
How he/ she has influenced you
Whether this person has influenced other people.
ANSWER:
I guess I could begin by saying something about who the person is and I think
I would have to choose my teacher, Ms. Chi, who used to be my chemistry
teacher, but now she is an old aged pensioner.
Going on to my next point, and I want to stress here that I first met this
teacher when I was in class 7.
And now with reference to how she influenced me and why I love her; the first
point I want to make here is that she influenced me to choose my field of study,
which is English. I have beautiful memories of what she taught me about life and
how to overcome difficulties. I will always remember when she left her class to
take me to the hospital when I was sick. Besides that, I can never forget the image
of her charming manners.
As for the final point, of course, I would like to tell you how she has influenced
other people, especially, she was not only an enthusiastic teacher but also a wise
counselor about love, friendship and troubles we confront (face) in life. She taught
me about kindness, by helping poor people.
13. Topic 4:
Describe someone you know who speaks another language.
You should say:
Who the person is
How you met this person
What other languages he/ she speaks
What you like about this person
ANSWER:
I guess I could begin by saying something about who the person is and I think I
will choose my teacher, Ms. Rachel, who used to be my English teacher, but now
is an old age pensioner.
Going on to my next point, and I want to stress here is that I first met this
teacher when I was in class 7. Although we only met twice a week in English
period, I treasure an abundance of wonderful memories about her.
And now with reference to what other languages she spoke; the first point I
want to make here is that she is half Japanese and half Chinese so she was fluent
in both Japanese and Chinese. Likewise, she could speak English fluently.
As for the final point, I would like to tell you why I liked this teacher so much,
and I should mention that I was only a naïve child when I met Ms. Rachel, but
this teacher opened my eyes to new horizons and inspired me with endless
possibilities for success, for those who never abandoned their dreams. She did this
by using many true stories from English literature about people of humble origins
who became great leaders, inventors, writers or successful in some impressive
way.
14. Topic 5:
Describe a neighbor who you get on well with
You should say:
Who the neighbor is
How long you have known this person
What you like about this person
How often you see this person
ANSWER:
So to begin with, in reply to the initial point of who the neighbor is, the one I
would pick is Nana, a woman who lives two doors from me. She used to be my
chemistry teacher.
Concerning the matter of how long I have known this person, I ought to stress
here that when I first met her, I was studying in secondary school at class 7. After
3 months she moved into my neighborhood. The first time I saw her in my
neighborhood, I was very surprised, but happy because I would be able to ask her
about chemistry problems.
Moving on to the business of what I liked about her, and I suppose I should
underline the fact that she was kind-hearted. As a typical example, she took
meals to an old person who lived alone and lacked money to buy adequate food.
She also influenced me in choosing my field of study at university.
As for the final point, I would like to tell you how often I see her. When I have
time, I return to my home town and will visit her 3 times a year, whereas if I’m
busy then I may only visit her once a year during the Tet holiday.
15. Topic 6:
Describe a child that you know/ family member you like
You should say:
Who the child is
How you know this child
What you like about his child
What things you do with this child
ANSWER:
I guess I could begin by saying something about who the person is and I think
I would have to choose my nephew, Tom, who is 9 years old, I have stayed with
him every national holiday and he is always so delighted to see me.
Going on to my next point and I would like to stress that I’ve known this kid
since he was born. I helped my sister to take care of him when he was just a baby,
so I feel very close to him.
And now with reference to what I like about him, and the point I want to make
is that he has a strong will, and always tries his best at everything. Furthermore, I
like him because he often kisses me after making me angry or when he wants me
to help him. Due to his behavior, I think he is very lovely.
As for the final point, of course, I would like to tell you what things we do
together. The most frequent thing is reading fairy tales together. Another common
activity is going to a children’s entertainment area to play games. Finally,
sometimes I like to take him to a restaurant to eat his favourite food, pizza.
16. Topic 7:
Describe a family member who you like
You should say:
Who the person is
Why you like this person
What things you do together
Whether you think you are similar to this person
ANSWER:
I guess I could begin by saying something about who the person is and I think
I would have to choose my nephew, Jack, who is 10 years old, I have stayed with
him every national holiday and he is always so delighted to see me.
Going on to my next point, what I would like to stress here is that we both like
to eat pizza and go to the cinema when we have free time.
And now with reference to why I like him, and the point I want to make here is
that he has a strong will, and always tries his best at everything. Furthermore, I
like him because he often kisses me after making me angry or when he wants me
to help him. Due to this behavior, I think he is very lovely.
As for the final point, I would like to tell you whether I am similar to this person.
First, I should mention that there is quite a wide variety of things that we both
enjoy going to the park to play badminton.
17. Topic 8:
Compare two members of your family
You should say:
Who the two people are
How they are similar
How they are different
What you like about these two people.
ANSWER:
In reply to the initial point of who they are, the family members I would choose
are my nephew John who is 2 and his older sister Lucy who is 4 years old. They
are my sister’s children.
Concerning the matter of how they are similar, and what I ought to stress here
is that they do have many similarities. One remarkable similarity is that they both
have round faces and a habit of sucking their thumbs when they sleep.
Moving on to the business of how they are different, I suppose I should
underline the fact that one can clearly distinguish them by skin color, John has a
light color skin and Lucy has darker skin. In terms of personality, John tends to be
more active and naughtier, whereas/in contrast, Lucy seems quieter. Another
obvious difference between them is that, John looks like his father while Lucy
looks like her mother.
As to the final point, I really should mention that because little children have
such innocent souls, spending time with them has helped me to see that I can have
a more positive attitude toward my own life.
18. Topic 9:
Describe someone you have studied or worked with
You should say:
Who the person was
When you first met this person
Whether you had a good relationship
Whether other people liked this person.
ANSWER:
Of course, I should begin by telling you who this person was and I’ve chosen
Mary, who was one of my best classmates, to discuss.
Continuing to the next point, about when I met her. It was the first day of high
school, and we were both about 16 years old. I was interested in her friendly,
sociable personality and the way she talked with everyone, so I made friends with
her and we always used to study together. I will never forget the many times we
stayed up late at night preparing for exams.
Even continuing to this day, we have had a good relationship, and remain close
friends, although we have studied in different universities. Naturally, I often idle
away some time with her whenever possible, going to the coffee shop or going for
a stroll in the park and talking together. This is very relaxing for us after a long
hard-working week.
As for the final point, with her fascinating personality and good character, helping
other people as she always does, of course, she has always been very well-liked by
other people.
19. Topic 10:
Describe a close friend
You should say:
Who the friend is
Where and when you first met
What you like about this friend
Whether this person is popular with other people
ANSWER:
Of course, I should begin by telling you who this person is and I’ve chosen
Sarah as the best friend to discuss.
Continuing to the next point, about the first time I met her we were in high
school, and we were both about 14 years old. I was initially attracted by her big
brown eyes, dimples and her oval face and her full lips. Later, I was fascinated by
her friendly, sociable personality and her ways of supporting and conforming me
when I had difficulties. So, we became best friends and study mates.
With reference to other reasons that I love Sarah, it would have to be based
upon both her appearance, and her personality too. She enthusiastically encourages
everyone to help poor and homeless people. Furthermore, I have always admired
the way she studied so hard, so, not surprisingly, she was the best student in my
class and was recognized by everyone as the model for other students to follow.
As for the final point, although she isn’t renowned throughout my country, she is
nevertheless well loved by her many friends, of whom I am only one.
20. Topic 11:
Describe a happy person who you know
You should say:
Who the person is
How you know this person
What things you do together
Why do you think this person is happy
ANSWER:
Of course, I should begin by telling you who this person is and I’ve chosen
Mary as the happiest friend I know.
Continuing to the next point, about how I know her, it began on the first day of
high school, when we were both about 16 years old. I was interested in her
friendly, sociable personality and the way she talked with everyone, so I made
friends with her and we became study mates.
With respect to what things we do, we still remain close friends, although we
studied in different universities. Naturally, I often idle away some time with her,
whenever possible, going to the coffee shop or going for a stroll in the park and
talking together. This is very relaxing for us after a long hard-working week.
As for the final point, with reference to the reason that I think Mary is a happy
person. That would have to be based partly upon her family, where she is loved by
all. Furthermore, she is also happy in her work, which is probably due to the fact
that she has a good job in a foreign company and all her colleagues are very
cooperative and helpful. Finally, I think her generous nature contributes to her
happiness.
21. Topic 12:
Describe a successful leader whom you admire.
You should say:
Who the person is
What makes her a good leader
Why you admire this person
Whether this person has influenced you
ANSWER:
I guess I could begin by saying something about who the person is and I will
choose the manager of a fashion shop where I once had a part-time job.
Going on to my next point, which is what made her a good leader and I really
must say that she was a great supervisor, and she would always give us guidance
about how to persuade customers. In addition, she always supported our sales staff
when the shop was very crowded. She frequently used to offer us a reward to
challenge us to compete in selling.
And now with reference to why I admire her, and the point I want to make here
is that she was very funny and sociable outside of work. Furthermore, she had a
full serving of leadership qualities. I loved her management style, which included
an occasional party if we earned high sales numbers.
As for the final point, of course, you must know that not only me but others also
admired her management style and have tried to imitate her in that respect.
Naturally, due to this fact, I think I would have to say that she has influenced me a
great deal.
22. Topic 13:
Describe someone who is famous in your country
You should say:
Who the person is
Why he/ she is famous
Why you admire this person
What you would do if you met this person
ANSWER:
So, to begin with, in reply to the initial point of who the person is, and the one I
would pick is My Tam – one of the best singers in Viet Nam. She was born in Da
Nang, a city in the central of Viet Nam, but now she lives in HCM City.
Now concerning the matter of why she is famous and what I ought to stress
here is that she is known as Queen of pop music. In fact, she was probably the
first Vietnamese singer in the country, especially those in central Viet Nam. I’m
sure millions of people in Viet Nam love her.
As for the final point, of course, you must know that Vietnamese people are
very fond of all kinds of popular music, so My Tam’s songs are very well-known
and frequently heard in my country.
23. TYPE 2: PLACES
Topic 14:
Describe a museum you have visited
You should say:
What type of museum it is
Why you visited this place
What you like about it
Whether you would like to go there again.
ANSWER:
Ok so my first point here would obviously be what type of museum it is and I
think I would have to choose the military history museum in Ho Chi Minh city. It
primarily contains exhibits relating to Vietnam’s past wars.
Regarding to the theme of why I visited this place and what I’d like to say here
is that I had to go there to find documents about certain Vietnam wars for a history
topic report, when I was in high school.
Drawing attention to the matter of what I liked about it, what I need to
emphasize here is that in this museum I found not only some rare insights into
history, but also learned some things about my ancestors. Furthermore, I am now
especially fond of the military history museum because of the fact that I learned
more about the way my ancestors struggled for the freedom and independence of
my country.
Finally then, I can deal with the last question of whether I would like to go there
again and my answer would definitely be yes, owing to the fact that going to the
museum not only widens my knowledge but also provides a perfect chance to meet
foreigners and to practice speaking English.
