2. You will be expected to accumulate your own list of vocabulary words
throughout the semester. These can be from the texts we read in class,
or other texts that you read.
Choose words that are
• useful
• interesting
• new for you
3. Why?
1. Vocabulary Sharpens Your Communication… By comparing the meaning of
new words with the ones you already know, you understand them in a
deeper way, enabling you to choose them more effectively.
2. Vocabulary Opens Your Mind… each new word you learn opens a new
avenue of thought, empowering you to think or take action in ways you
could never have before.
3. Vocabulary Gets You Results… a person’s vocabulary level is the best single
predictor of occupational success.
4. The graded list
due the day of the final exam
at least 15 words
counts 10% of overall grade
5. For each word, include:
• the word
• its original context
• the part of speech (verb, noun, adjective, adverb, etc.)
• a short definition (as it was used in the context)
• Your own example sentence using that word, using the same meaning as the context and the definition (Do
not copy-paste from any source; it has to be your own sentence).
Example:
a. Inscrutable
b. Context: " Millions of inscrutable e-mail messages are clogging corporate computers by setting off requests
for clarification, and many of the requests, in turn, are also chaotically written, resulting in whole cycles of
confusion "
c. Part Of Speech: Adjective
d. Definition according to the text: Unreadable, mysterious.
e. Original sentence: Inscrutable messages are sometimes deliberately used to convey incorrect information to
confuse hackers.
6. I will ask to see your list so far at the mid-term, to check
your progress and to see that you are choosing useful
words.
So…
For everything you read in English for the next 15
weeks, be watching for new words that you can add to
your list.
