4. INTRODUCTION
• What is Stress
The concept of stress was first introduced in the life sciences
by Dr. Hans Selye in 1936.
• The word ‘stress’ in common English usage means
conditions causing hardship or times of trouble, danger and
tension.
• stress is something which beyond the capacity of a person.
• In this context, the term stress was used to mean the force,
pressure, strain or strong effort exerted upon a material
object or a person.
• During the 19th and the early 20th century the word came to
be used as an analogue in the social and biological sciences
to describe a possible cause of ill health and mental illness

5. THE NATURE OF 21st CENTURY
STRESS
• A 24-7 society where everything and everyone is accessible
all the time
• The rapid rate of change, from technology to economics to
family dynamics
• Growing threat of terrorism, global warming, other changing
world dynamics
• Greater responsibilities and seemingly less freedom
• The number of stressors in our lives appears to be increasing
• The amount of leisure time appears to be decreasing
• Research now indicates a solid link between lifestyles and
stress-related disease.
• As much as 70–85% of all disease and illness is stress-
related, from the common cold to cancer, from herpes to
hemorrhoids.

periods of depression),, tension
headache, jaw pain.
Physical problems:
(Headache, pain, stomach upset,
Muscular problems including back pain
dizziness, heart palpitations, shortness

palpitations, blood pressure, rapid
heartbeat, dizziness, sweaty palms,
migraine headaches, cold hands or feet,
chest pain and shortness of breath
Episodic Stress
➢ The acute stress which is
suffered too frequently is termed
Episodic stress.
➢ The people who have unrealistic

depression, anxiety disorders and
emotional distress

unhealthy.
➢ Chronic stress is caused by long term
exposure to stressors, such as unhappy
marriage, traumatic experiences,
unwanted career or job, stress of
poverty, chronic illnesses, relationship
conflicts, political problems, and
dysfunctional families.
➢ Chronic stress can induce serious
illnesses like stroke, heart attack,
