3. NATURAL RESOURCES OF ORISSA
• Orissa is a state of India. It is situated on the eastern coast
of the country. Its area is 155845. 48 sq. km. The State is
surrounded by Bay of Bengal on east. West Bengal on
North-East, Jharkhand on North, Madhya Pradesh on West
and Andhra Pradesh on south. The state has plenty of all
types of natural resources like forest, minerals, water and
land.

6. • Orissa has a number of big and small rivers flowing across the
state. All the rivers ends in the Bay of Bengal. Out of all rivers
Mahanadi is the biggest one. It is originated at Amarkantak
plateau of Madhya Pradesh. The length of the river is 858 km.
Hirakud dam at Burla, Sambalpur is constructed on the river
Mahanadi. Indravati dam is constructed at Jeypore.

• The dams are used for Hydro electricity generation and irrigation
purposes. The river forms a delta at Cuttack from which many
Subsidiaries Rivers like Kathjodi, Kuakhia, Birupa etc. have come
out. Besides Mahanadi, there are other rivers like Subamarekha,
Budhabalang, Baitarani, Brahmani, Rushikulya, Bansadhara
present in the states. There are two big lakes namely Chilika and
Anshupa in the state. These two lakes are big attraction for the
tourists and they provide good quality of variety of fishes.
8. • The state is divided into three zones according to its land
structure. They are central mountain region, western hill
region and coastal plain region. The central mountain
region is present centrally and is extended from North-
East to South-west it is extended from Similipal of
Mayurbhanj to Malkangiri in South.
• Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Angul, Baudh and Khandhamal,
Nayagarh, Cuttack, Kalahandi, Koraput and Malkangiri
are the states present in this region. The Western hill
region is present on the left of river Mahanadi towards
west of central mountain region. Sundergarh, Jharsuguda,
Sambalpur, Deogarh etc. are present in this region.
9. • Mahanadi and Brahmani are present in the central region
but Tel, Indravati, Rushikulya, Bansadhara etc. are
present in western Hill region. The coastal plain region is
extended on east from Bay of Bengal on West to Eastern
Ghat Mountain. The area is extended on North from river
Subarnarekha to Rushikulya on South.
• This plain has very fertile soil and so produces plenty of
food grains like rice, groundnut sugarcane etc. Balasore,
Bhadrak, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Puri and Ganjam
are the districts present in this region. All major rivers of
the state pass through this region & fall in Bay of Bengal.
11. • The South-Western and North-Eastern monsoon provides
enough rain fall in the state. The state provides all types of
forests due to its geographical location. The forests like
evergreen, monsoon, tidal and mountain types are present are
the state. These forests have many types of trees and plants
making the state as one of the major forest resources of the
country. Nearly 32 per cent of the area of the state is now
covered with forest.
• The forest of the state provides tree like Teak, Sal, Shisu,
Khaira, etc. besides bamboos in planty. Nearly eightly percent
of forest in the state is of deciduous type. This type of forest
provides many varieties of valuable tree for housing and
industry purposes. Besides this, forest also gives kenduleaves in
plenty for bidi industry
12. • Many wild life sanctuaries are present at various parts of
the state for conservation and protection of forest animals.
Similipal in Mayurbhanj, Badrama in Sambalpur are
famous for tigers and other animals. Chilika is famous for
its bird’s sanctuary
14. • Orissa has plenty of different minerals and energy
resources. The minerals like Iron ore, Manganese,
Chromite, Bauxite and limestone’s are plentily available at
different places of the State. Besides these minerals Orissa
has a large reserve of coal at places like Angul ,Jharsuguda
etc.
• Orissa is one of the leading center in our country for the
production of iron ore Badampahar in Mayurbhanj,
Kendujhar, Jaipur and Sundargarh are famous for iron-
ore reserve. Orissa is first in the country for the Keonjhar
production of manganese ore. Sundargarh, Kalahandi,,
Balangir, Koraput are the places where this ore is found.
15. • Orissa is first in India for- chromite ore. Jaipur, Keonjhar,
Dhenkanal are the districts which produces this ore
Sambalpur, Balangir, Kalahandi and Koraput produces
plenty of Bauxites for use in Aluminium industry.
Sundargarh and Sambalpur are the places which produces
limestone’s for cement and other industries.
