4. LOCATION
• A country in South Asia is Bangladesh.
• India forms its western, northern, and eastern borders with it.
Myanmar (Burma) forms its southern border.
• It faces the Bay of Bengal to the south.
5. LIBERATION WAR OF BANGLADESH
Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman made the proclamation of
independence due to political marginalization, racial and linguistic
prejudice, and economic neglect by the politically powerful West
Pakistan.
On March 26, 1971, which is commemorated as Independence Day
each year, a broad-based movement of non-cooperation with the
military government began.
6. LIBERATION WAR OF BANGLADESH
• Bangladesh thereafter entered a bloody fight in search of its
own birth. Three million Bengalis are thought to have been
killed during the subsequent nine-month conflict, while ten
million refugees fled to India.
• The Pakistani army was forced to surrender on 16 December
1971 and the day is commemorated as Victory Day.
7. HISTORY OF BANGLA LANGUAGE
• In the tenth century, a version of Prakrit gave rise to the Bangla
language.
• The Brahmi alphabet, which was in use from 273 to 232 BC, is
the ancestor of the Bengali script.
• Three historical periods have been identified for the Bengali
language: Old Bengali (950–1350), Middle Bengali (1350–
1800), and Modern Bengali (1800 to the present day).
• Bangladesh's official language is Bengali, which is also India's
second-most-spoken language.
8. 21ST FEBRUARY, INTERNATIONAL MOTHER
LANGUAGE DAY
• Pakistan was split into two regions before 1971: East and West. East
Pakistan was the name of current Bangladesh, and West Pakistan was
the name of current Pakistan.
• Urdu was made the only language permitted to be used throughout the
nation by the Pakistani government of the time. With a sizable
Bengali-speaking population, East Pakistan refused to uphold the law.
• On February 21, 1952, Dhaka University students and other political
activists organized a local demonstration.
• Curfew was imposed by the government to prevent the strike.
9. 21ST FEBRUARY, INTERNATIONAL MOTHER
LANGUAGE DAY
• Police brutally shot and killed many student teachers and other
protesters after they engaged in the protest.
• Eventually, this tremendous sacrifice brought about the global
acknowledgment of mother language preservation.
• On Bangladesh's proposal, UNESCO designated February 21
as International Mother Language Day on November 17, 1999.
