• No evidence for educational beliefs & theory from Indus valley civilization :

engineering skills evident.
• It was during the Vedic period that the main postulates of education were
laid down or were formulated.
• The tradition of receiving knowledge in a gurukul in form of Brahmacharya
ashram originated in this very period.

• Taittiriya Upanishad: Instructions given to student at the end of his studies.
• Highest position in society willingly yielded to the intellectual aristocracy.
• Brihadaranyak Upanishad: Even the old men became pupils. Reference to women teachers
21. 6th cent BCE onwards
• Antiquity of writing indicates that this writing skill was been learnt by people.
• Texts on grammar, medicine demonstrates the expertise and base for study of
language.
• Archaeological remains of educational centre at Taxila, furnished the evidence of
an institutionalized setup for imparting education.
• Buddhist literature: several students who were studying various branches of
subjects at Taxila.
• Maltimadhava : Example of female student at gurukul.
25. Upanishads
• Upanishads: Wide range of subjects of study = comprehensive
• Chhandogya Upanishad: List of subjects of study- Veda, Itihas, Purana, Brahma vidya,
Grammar, mathematics(Raashi), Chronology (Nidhi), Dialectics(Vaakovakya), ethics
(Ekaayana), Astronomy, Military science, science of snakes, Knowledge of portents (Deva).
• Max Muller: Brahma Vidya = Shiksha, Kalpa, Chhanda
• Devayajna vidya = The science of the genii- perfumery, dancing,singing and other fine arts.
• Bhuta vidya = Science of elements; Pitrya = rules for sacrifices; Veda = Grammar of Vedas.
• 6 subjects of Vedangas formed only a small portion of the curriculum of the study and not
the whole of it.

• Very creative and decisive phase for Indian education.
• Inclusion of many novel subjects and disciplines in education.
• Growth in study of practical and vocational subjects.

28. Post Gupta period- Early Medieval Period
• बौद्ध ग्रंथों एवं दिगन का पठन पाठन : पाशल भाषा
• हषग चररत : त्तवंध्य क्षेत्र में त्तवरोधी दिगनों का तुलनात्मक अध्ययन
• Hiuen Tsang spent several years studying in Nalanda.
• ‘Ghatikas’, or colleges attached to the temples emerged as new centres of learning.
• The ‘ghatikas’, provided Brahmanical education.
• The medium of instruction was Sanskrit.
• Entry to these temple colleges was open only to the upper castes or ‘dvijas’ (twice
born).
• Use of Sanskrit as the medium of instruction distanced the
