HDT Practical Exp. 8 Evaluation of Herbal Product
1. Experiment 8.
Formulation and Evaluation of
Herbal (Turmeric) Cream.
By
Mrs. Poonam N. Chougule
Assistant Professor and HOD of Pharmacognosy department
AMCP, Peth- Vadgaon.
2. Aim: To prepare and submit 10gm of
Turmeric- Aloe Vera Gel(Herbal Cream)
ο Principle- Creams are viscous semi-solid
emulsions which are meant for external
application. They usually contain water soluble
base so that it can easily be removed from the
skin. When applied to the skin, creams leave no
visible evidence of their presence on skin.
ο Creams consist of medicaments dissolved or
suspended in water removable or emollient bases.
Creams are of two types:
ο Aqueous cream(O/W)
ο Oily cream (W/O)
ο Therefore, combining immiscible compounds is
possible by mechanical agitation or heat.
3. Ingredients Herbal cream for
10gms.
ο White beeswax -5gm
ο Liquid parrafin -7ml
ο Borax -2gm
ο Water -5ml
ο Perfume -2 drops
ο Curcumin(Turmeric) -200mg
ο Aloe Vera gel -1gm
ο Methyl paraben -0.02gm
ο Ethyl alcohol -2ml(qs to dissolve curcumin)
4. Procedure-
ο Melted the beeswax with mineral oil by
heating on a water bath at the temperature
of 70α΅ C. Here curcumin is not soluble in
water. So it was mixed with minimum quality
of ethyl alcohol. This was added to the borax
water mixture and heated to the borax water
mixture and heated to the same
temperature. Both the temperature were
attained at a temperature of 70α΅ c added the
aqueous phase to oil phase with rapid
constant stirring until cool. Filtered it into a
container and labeled.
5. Evaluation parameters of Turmeric
herbal formulations-
ο Determination of pH-
1gm of prepared cream and add 9ml of
freshly boiled and cooled water. Stir well and
make a suspension, pH was determined by
using pH meter.
6. ο Spreadability tests-
About 1gm of sample was weighed and placed at
the center of the glass plate and another glass
plate was placed over it carefully above the glass
plate 100gm weight was placed up on upper
slide so that the formulation between two slides
was pressed uniformly to form a thin layer, the
weight was removed and the excess of
formulation adhering to the slides was scrapped
off. One of the slides was fixed on which the
formulation was placed, the time in which upper
side moves over the lower plate was taken as
measure of spreadability.
Spreadability is calculated by using the formula:
= m.l/t,
where m is weight on the slide, l is length
moved on the slide , t is time taken.
7. ο Skin irritation test-
The cream was placed on patches and
covered with gauze for 4 hrs, skin was
observed with any signs of redness,
inflammation and weeping of scabs.
ο Penetration test-
0.5gm of cream was rubbed over definite
area of the skin for a given time then
unabsorbed amount was collected from
skin and weighed.
8. Uses of Herbal cream-
1. Anti-wrinkle properties of turmeric herbal
formulation.
2. Anti-aging properties.
3. Skin protective properties.
4. Anti- microbial and anti-fungal
properties.
