Introduction:
University websites such as https://www.uidaho.edu/ and https://wsu.edu are used by students,
parents, and alumni to gather information on the university. This white paper shows the results of
a usability test that compared how well the websites preformed in ten specific tasks which were
rated using five component standards that define usability. These tasks are ones that first-time
users such as prospective and current students and alumni would perform.
Methodology:
Equipment and Environment:
This test of usability of University of Idaho and Washington State University official websites
for first-time users was conducted using Mozilla Firefox 59.0.2 (64-bit) on a Windows 2017
ASUS with intel CORE i5 7th Gen.
Most typical users of the University of Idaho and Washington State University official websites
would choose to work in the comfort of their own home. Likely those preforming these tasks,
could be multitasking, and doing other activities as well. They would use the website to complete
a certain task, or to just browse to learn more about the university.
Thus, the usability task was conducted in a similar environment intended to fit the conditions
above: in my own home, while tv playing in the background. It was approached by a task-by-task
basis. Each task was then evaluated immediately after completion based on it fulfillment of 5
predetermined metrics.
Tasks:
1. Give money to the university
2. Find out when sorority recruitment is
3. Learn about what Club Sports are offered
4. Find the application to apply
5. Find upcoming athletic events
6. Determine when your final is
7. Determine where to park on campus
8. Find general contact information for the University
9. Determine what a master’s program in food science requires
10. Find the handshake portal for employment

Results:
Give money to the university
UI: First click on the “GIVE” button located on
the right top corner of the home page. Then you
may either search for a fund to donate to or pick
from the list of giving priorities listed below. Then
you must specify a gift amount which must be
above $1.00. Then you must fill out the donor
information’s, which then leads you to the
payment information screen.
Figure 1: Donation screen for U of I
WSU: Click on the “Give To WSU” bottom which is
located on the right hand upper corner. The next page
then leads to a drop down to pick the fund you wish to
donate to. After picking a fund, predetermine amount
will show up below. After one is selected a will ask if
you want to give more money on top of that. It then
asks if you would like to consider adding WSU on
your will. You can skip this and proceed straight to
check out. If you choose this option it then leads you
to choose payment, how often you want to donate, and
if you want to honor anyone. Then it asks to put the
payment information in.
Figure 2: Donation screen for WSU
These tasks were very similar to
perform on both interfaces.
Washington State University’s website
received lower ratings in being
effectiveness and engaging. It received
lower score because it took longer to
get through all of the questions it asks
you. It was also less satisfying to
complete this task because after you
pick an amount to donate, it then asks
you for more money which is rather
annoying. University of Idaho’s website
received all fives except for in effective, it
received a four. This was because there
were multiple steps to be performed to
give to the university.

6. 6
Find out when sorority recruitment is
UI: Click on the “Student Life” on the top row.
Then scroll down to Live, and there will be a
picture of two people walking. Then hover over
the picture, and it will say “live on campus”.
Click on this and it will lead to another page.
Then Fraternity and Sorority Life will be in the
left column. Click on the “Go Greek” button in
the box. Then there two options, either click on
“Learn More” or “Fall Recruitment”. It will then
display when it is and the schedules. It also
allows you to register.
WSU: First click on “Community Life” located on
the top row. It will then drop down, and then click
on “housing”. The scroll down, it will show three
different housing options, and the description below
them. After clicking on “Greek houses”, click on
the left-hand side “how to join”. It will then have a
drop down, click on sorority recruitment. It then
shows that dates of recruitment and allow you
register right there.
These tasks were similar to perform
on both platforms. University of Idaho
did get a lower score in Engaging
though, because it was difficult to find
what to click on after clicking on
“Student Life”. This would be difficult
to determine what to click on
especially if you didn’t know exactly
what you were looking for.

7. 7
Learn about what Club Sports are offered
UI: First click on “student life” in the top row. Then
scroll down to explore and hover over the picture of a
girl throwing a Frisbee. It will then say campus
recreation and intermurals, click on that box. Then on
the newly loaded page on the left-hand side, sixth
idea down click on “club sports”. All the club sport
will then be listed on the right-hand side. Click on
anyone to learn more about the clubs and contact
information for the person in charge.
WSU: Click on “community life”, then click
entertainment on the drop down under it. Then scroll
down to things to do and click on “sports and
recreation”. Then scroll down on the next page and
click on “sport clubs” The page will then show the
current clubs in the middle of the screen. If you click
on any that are of interest, it will tell you information
about the club and contact information.
These tests were similar to perform on both
university’s websites, and score should that.
University of Idaho website receive a lower
score in only the engaging section. This was
because on the page after clicking on
campus life, it showed no word unless you
hovered over the picture. This can be
confusing for people, that don’t know how
the website works. I might not have known
how to find what they were if I didn’t do a
previous task on this page.

Find the application to apply
UI: Click on “admissions” located on the top row
of the page. Scroll down and click “Apply now”
or also from the home page can click “Prospective
student” then ‘Apply”. Select what type of
student you are, University of Idaho application,
weather you a citizen or not, select a term, and
then it send you to the online application form.
WSU: Click on “Admissions” located on the top
row of the home page. Then click on “Applying
to WSU”. Select year you are applying, then
scroll down and select admissions application.
Then select learn more, followed by apply. It will
then take you to the application.
This task took multiple
clicks on both websites.
WSU scored lower in
effectiveness because it
took longer to complete
the task. Other than that,
the process to apply to the
universities are similar.
Figure 10: UI page to apply

Find Upcoming Athletic Events
UI: Click on “Athletics” which is
located on the top right-hand
corner. It will then redirect to you
to the athletics website. Upcoming
events are then located across the
top of the page. It lists the sport,
the time, the date, and the
opponent.
WSU: Click on “Community Life”, and then
click on “Sports and Recreation” on the left-
hand side, then scroll down and click on
“Pac-12 Sports”. Then the schedule, the time,
and opponent are all listed on the left-hand
side.
The University of Idaho’s website
only took one click to complete the
task, so it scored higher in efficiency
than Washington State University’s
website. It also scored higher in
engaging as well because it is easier
to read off the website. It was easier
to read because it was located on the
top of the screen, and even shows
their opponents mascot, which can be
helpful.
Figure 15: Result of the 5-predetermined
metrics for finding upcoming athletic events

10. 10
Determine when your final is
UI: Click on “Current Students”, then there will be a drop
down. Then click on “dates and deadlines”. The final exam
schedule button will be on the left-hand side, the click on
fall after that. The schedule will pop up. Use the first day the
class meets and the time, then follow it over to the left to
determine date and time of the final.
WSU: After searching for several
minutes, no button was found. The
search bar was the used for it. I
typed in “Final exam schedule”. I
then clicked on the first link that
said:” Final examination schedule.
Then clicked on “Spring 2018”.
Then you have to search for the
time and date of the class meet
regularly, and then the final time
and date will be list on the left-
hand side.
Washington State University’s website scored
only a 2 in efficiency, this was because I spent
several minutes looking for where the final
schedule would be posted on the website. I
could not find it though and had to resort to
using the search bar on the website. The search
is a great resource, but I think the final
schedule should be posted somewhere public.
WSU’s website also received a lower score in
Easy to learn because the final schedule was
difficult to interpret. Figure 18: Result of the 5-predetermined
metrics for determining when your final is

11. 11
Determine where to park on campus
UI: After searching for several minutes,
there was no button found to lead to the
parking map, so it had to be searched for
in the search bar for “Campus parking”.
Then click on “parking permit”, and
then “parking maps” on the left-hand
side. Click on “open map” under the
campus parking map.
WSU: Click on “about” located on the
top of the page, the services on the drop
down. Then scroll down o
administrative, and click on “Parking
and Transportation, then scroll down
and click on campus map.
University of Idaho’s website scored lower
on efficiency because I could not locate the
tab that campus parking would be under. So
that took 5 minutes of looking, then I finally
searched for it in the search box.
Washington State University’s website
scored lower in engaging because the map
was more complicated, and harder to read.

Find general contact information for the University
UI: Click on “about” located on
the top row of the page. The
information to contact the
university is located on the left-
hand side.
WSU: Click on “About” located on the
top row, then click on “contact us”.
Then it will give multiple phone
numbers and emails to contact the
university.
University of Idaho’s website was
easy to use, and efficient. It did
score lower in engaging because
it only gave one number and
wasn’t specific about what type of
questions could be answered from
this contact information.
Washington State University’s
website did require more clicks,
so it received a lower score in
efficiency. It did however receive
a higher score than U of I’s in
engaging because it offered a
wide variety of phone numbers,
and what they pertained to.

Determine what a master’s program in food science requires
UI: First click on “Academics” located on the top row
of the page. Then click on “Agriculture and Life
Science” located under colleges. Then click on
“Majors and Degrees” located on the left-hand side.
Scroll down and then click on “Food Science”, and
then on “M.S. degree” on the left-hand side.
WSU: Click on “Academics”
located on the top row of the page,
followed by “graduate programs”.
Then the alphabet will appear,
click on “F” for food science. It
will then display all the majors
that start with a F. Click on “food
science” then click on “Master of
Science”.
As the results show both websites were
rated low in efficiency. This was because
there was many screen and click you would
have to go through to the find the
information you are looking for. University
of Idaho’s website got a lower rating
because it was an even longer process.
Washington State University’s scored
higher in engaging because the platform was
easier to use. I especially liked the fact that
it showed an alphabet and you could click
on any letter and go start to the majors that
began with that letter.

Find the handshake portal for employment
UI: First click on “current students located on
the top row of the website. Then on the next page
click on “Career services”, and the “Hire a
Vandal”. The link to handshake will the
show.
WSU: First click on “Community Life”
located on the top row of the home page.
Then click on “Careers and Jobs”, and
scroll to student employment, and the will
be a link to access handshake.
This task was easy and straight
forward on both websites. They both
score low in efficiency because there
were numerous clicks to get to the
handshake page on both websites, but
more on University of Idaho’s
website.
Figure 30: Result of 5 determined metrics for finding hand shake portal

15. 15
As the results show, both websites were similar. The University of Idaho’s website was rated
better than Washington State University four times, while WSU’s was better than U of I’s four
times as well, and they both tied twice. The most noticeable difference was task 5, finding
upcoming athletic events on campus. The University of Idaho’s website was easier to use and
took less time to get to that Washington State University’s.
This figure shows that the University of Idaho’s website rated higher overall or tied in all
categories where it was scored. The University of Idaho was noticeable more engaging than
Washington State University’s website.

Discussion:
Overall the University of Idaho’s and Washington States University’s official school websites
preformed similarly while completing the 10 designated of tasks. This can be shown by figure
31, the University of Idaho’s website was rated better than Washington State University four
times, while WSU’s was better than U of I’s four times as well, and they both tied twice. Task 5,
finding upcoming athletic events, had the largest difference in performance. The University of
Idaho performed better by 4 points. Overall both websites scored low in efficiency and engaging.
Both websites did well completing each task, I tried not use the search bar unless it was the last
option. The search bar is a great option to use but it would have defeated the purpose of each of
these tasks if I automatically searched for each of them. I tried to look around the websites for at
least 3 minutes before moving to the search bar.
There is only a few recommendations that I would make. To the University of Idaho, it would be
to include words along with pictures under “Student Life”. If people can’t understand what the
picture is they might not hover over it and see what is connected to. To Washington State
University, it would be to not ask for more money once someone has already decided to donate.
This seems greedy and could deter people from donating. Another item I would recommend
changing is the final schedule, it is hard to read and to interpret, especially compared to the U of
I’s.
