Career plan
1. Date Career Stage Explanation
2018-2021 University Years 1-3 If gaining the required
grades I would like to study
Film, Television and Digital
production at Royal
Holloway, University of
London. This course is full
time and lasts three years.
During the first year of the
course I would be studying a
variety of different topics
surrounding film and
television history, this is very
good as it would allow me to
look at how things were
done in the past, how they
have changed and how
some of the old techniques
and practises are used. I
would also be studying an
introduction to critical theory
and textual analysis.This is
very good as it will allow me
to learn new skills and
develop current ones. We
will also study media
practise which means the
way that things are done
and why they are done, this
is good as it gives you a
different view and insight as
to what goes on.
Year 2 - During the second
year I will be studying a
much wider range of topics
such as documentary
analysis, this allows me to
understand a different side
of production as
documentaries are created
differently to the generall
television show. Another
topic we will study is avant-
garde film which is a style of
filmmaking that doesn't go
against normal conventions.
I feel that this will be a very
interesting topic as it is a
way of filmmaking that is
totally different from the
norm and will give me a idea
2. on the many different ways
that films can be made. We
will also be studying screen
writing, directing screen
fiction and about producing
film and television. These
topics will be very helpful as
it is some of the features of
being a director so it will be
good to experience some of
the things that a director
actually does.
Year 3 - During the third
year I will be working on my
dissertation. I will also be
studying about film
aesthetics; this will be useful
as as a director you are
always focused on the look
of the film and that is what
aesthetics is all about.
Another topic that will be
useful is about avenues and
alleyways, this is all about
how you would get into the
industry which is very
beneficial as it can
sometimes be difficult to get
into. We will also study
Cinephilia from 1915 to the
current day which is good as
it we'll find out what made
people interested in film.
2022 Full Time Job - Runner Once completing the course
at university I will look to
become a full time runner.
This would involve carrying
out a variety of different jobs
such as answering
telephones, filing paperwork
and data entry. On set it
could require things such as
distribute call sheets, health
and safety notices, and
other paperwork. Whilst
doing this I will also be able
to observe what is going on
and the way that things are
happening and seeing how
a professional director
amongst other professionals
3. work.
2023 Full Time Job - Assistant
Director
After a year as a full time
runner and seeing how the
environment is, I would
focus on becoming an
assistant director. By using
my past experiences I would
hope to convince a director
to let me be their assistant.
By being an assistant
director I would be working
closely with the director, this
would involve tracking daily
progress against the filming
production schedule,
arranging logistics,
preparing daily call sheets,
checking cast and crew, and
maintaining order on the set.
Inspiration
Stanley Kubrick was born in Manhattan, New York City. His family were Jewish immigrants.
Stanley was considered intelligent, despite poor grades at school. Hoping that a change of
scenery would produce better academic performance, Kubrick's father sent him in 1940 to
Pasadena, California, to stay with his uncle. Returning to the Bronx in 1941 for his last year
of grammar school, there seemed to be little change in his attitude or his results.
Jack Kubrick's decision to give his son a camera for his thirteenth birthday would be an even
wiser move: Kubrick became an avid photographer, and would often make trips around New
York taking photographs which he would develop in a friend's darkroom. After selling an
unsolicited photograph to Look Magazine, Kubrick began to associate with their staff
photographers, and at the age of seventeen was offered a job as an apprentice
photographer.
In the next few years, Kubrick had regular assignments for "Look", and would become a
voracious movie-goer. Together with friend Alexander Singer, Kubrick planned a move into
film, and in 1950 sank his savings into making the documentary Day of the Fight (1951). This
was followed by several short commissioned documentaries (Flying Padre (1951), and (The
Seafarers (1953), but by attracting investors and hustling chess games in Central Park,
Kubrick was able to make Fear and Desire (1953) in California.
Later on in 1968 Stanley directed ‘2001: A Space Odyssey’ , ‘A Clockwork Orange’ (1971),
‘The Shining’ (1980) and ‘ Full Metal Jacket’ (1987). Stanley Kubrick is my inspiration as
although he had poor grades at school he found something he loved and made sure that he
pursued it in any way possible. It just reinforces the fact that your school grades don't define
you, it's what you do with your life and your passion.
