My Favorite Gift
Do you remember the first time you were truly happy? Filled with joy and hope on what was to come? The first time I experienced this feeling came
on a Christmas Morning when Santa successfully delivered the one present on my reasonably small wish list .
It started as a development of socks, shoes, and sweaters, moving to books and a fashion of corduroy pants my mom seemed to love. As the gifts that I
should be
" Thankful for " came in throughout the years, I took them up to my room, set them aside and began to pray for something other than a decorative
wool cardigan my grandmother would give me. Not sure if it could be considered an Ugly Sweater, I always had to accept the as it was; a piece of
cloth only to be worn as pajamas inside my home. As my friends from school would come back with assortments of japanese erasers, games of mario
kart and star wars for the wii and numerous sets of legos, I decided I was going to take matters into my own hands and ask for an Ipod for next year.
As the seasons changed, I continued to think about my one and only christmas wish. An Ipod, but not Just any Ipod, the ipod shuffle. A new
development of technology that would change the world forever. A gift so special I began to look forward to shocked look on my classmates faces
more than the excitement of the present alone. As christmas had finally arrived, I followed the star of bethlehem that had lead me down stairs to the
presents under the tree. Eyeing a small box, I began to open

Essay On My Favourite Birthday Gift
It was my seventh birthday and also one of the best days of my entire life. I had just opened up the last of my presents and was thanking my family
for all the gifts they had given me for my birthday. When I heard a bark and turned around to see my dad holding what would be my favorite birthday
present that I ever received. It was my first dog, an Irish Setter named Scarlet.
Scarlet was a very playful and stubborn puppy. She loved to run and chase anything that would move, including her tail and the neighbor's cat.
Although, a very playful and stubborn dog Scarlet was undoubtedly a very intelligent animal as well. She was completely house trained in under a
week and learned how to play fetch in two weeks. Occasionally of course her playfulness turned our games of fetch into games of me chasing her
around the yard trying to get the tennis ball back.
It was also a great responsibility that my parents entrusted me to take care of. I had to feed her, keep her groomed, and of course teach her the
correct way to act. My dad taught me that you always make sure that your dog is fed, before you feed yourself. This lesson I didn't figure out to later
in life was meant for not only my...show more content...
The second thing I had to teach her was not to chew up my mom's stuffed bears. She wouldn't bother them unless she was home alone. So, the third
day I came home from school and she had the bears chewed up, I spanked her like a mother spanks her child. Scarlet never chewed another bear
again in her life. Then of course I taught her to play fetch. Scarlet took to playing fetch very quickly. Well, if I am being completely honest she took
to playing make human chase dog to get ball back very quickly. It took about two weeks to get the correct outcome of

The Act Of Gift Giving
The act of gift giving has become largely commercialized in the Western world. Diving a level deeper by converting a gifted item into an item
avaiable for resale creates an even more commerical approach to this act of kindness. In the film Babel(2006), the director Alejandro GonzГЎlez
IГ±ГЎrritu employs the message that when something is converted into a capital good it becomes dangerous. Babel(2006) follows four interrelated
sets of situations and characters across the world united by one item. A gun that was gifted from a Japanese man to a farmer in Morocco is sold and
later used in an accidental shooting of an American woman visiting Morocco. This is an act of capital conversion because it turns something that was
given as a gift for no...show more content...
First, Abdullah's two sons accidentally shoot an American tourist who was riding on a tour bus. One of the sons is later shot and killed during a
shootout with investigating authorities. The woman taking care of the American tourist's children, Amelia, is back in San Diego. She is
questioned at the border, and then she is deported for being an illegal immigrant after her driver tries to flee from the police. The Japanese man
called Mr. Wataya, who originally gave the gun as a gift, has a deaf teenage daughter. His daughter is lonely and makes an advance on an
investigator that goes to their apartment to ask questions about the rifle. She is rejected and continues to suffer loneliness. Circling back to the
American tourist couple, after the wife is shot she is eventually taken to a hospital and recovers. Essentially, all of the conflict in the film can be
traced back to that rifle. The subtle message portrayed here by the director is that once the rifle became a piece of capital goods and no longer a gift
given in kindness, it was cursed in a way and only created trouble. One interesting element about Amelia's predicament was that it wasn't until she
changed her story from being an Aunt to the children to a paid caretaker that trouble started. This is another example of capital conversion in motion, as
the film seems to show very subtly. According to one study, about

Narrative Essay About A Birthday Gift
I woke up to the feeling to excitement, eager for the day to come, I ran downstairs ready to see what awaits my arrival. I come down to streamers
hanging in the color of happiness, and a sign that read the words I was waiting to hear. "Happy Birthday Honey!", screamed my mom. I was so happy
to see everything it was finally my birthday, I was finally twelve!! I couldn't believe it! After taking it all in I decided to get dressed before we started to
do anything. As I walk up the stairs I lay out the events of the day in my head– eat breakfast... open presents... make food... pack car... leave. Then I put
on some of my favorite clothes and run back downstairs to start breakfast and open presents. After I started the waffles I head over to the family...show

"Yep I'm all good!!!!" my youngest sister said, easily calming down my mom. While we were all ready we knew we wernt leaving for another two
hours and had to make the best of it.
In the kitchen I got out all the necessary ingredients. We were going camping with friends and I was helping to make thedinner for tonight. Since it was
my birthday I got to pick. I chose burgers, they're my favorite, at least the ones I make are. I quickly made all the burgers although it took me quite a
while because I had glanced at the clock only to see that an hour had passed. I was sad because I thought I would have time to build my lego set but it
was time to go and it okay, because camping is always fun.
After a long endless car ride we made it to our destination and we went to the small store to check in to our cabin. It was great to finally be there
because my sisters were getting to be really annoying "Be QUIET!!" "no you be quiet and scooch over!!!" "JUST MOVE OVER!!!!!!"
Even though it was winter time I saw ice cream and my temptations got the best of me. I got some dippin dots and then we drove down to where our
cabins were. As we unpacked our things, other fmailies started to arrive and I was wating for my frineds, the moment I saw them I was gone for good
It was almost dinner time and my dad and some of the other dads were starting to cook. I wanted to help but decided "ah whatever" I'll just go out on

How has the author used techniques to develop the three main characters in The Simple Gift?
The free verse poetry novel The Simple Gift written by Steven Herrick uses poetry techniques to develop the three main characters in the novel. The
development for Billy's character is shown through the techniques internal rhyme, alliteration and repetition. Old Bill's character develops through the
use of repetition. Caitlin's characters opinion on Old Billy develops shown through repetition.
The author of The Simple Gift has used multiple techniques to show the development of Billy's homeless state and his perspective on learning. At the
beginning of the novel the author uses internal rhyme which shows that Billy thinks he can learn everything from reading books "I learnt all I need to
know/in the books on the banks". Herrick has done this to empathise that Billy is not at school but at the river bank reading. When Billy decides to
become homeless he has no education and no place to stay"I'm...show more content...
When Caitlin first sees Old Bill with Billy, she sees him as a dirty no good hobo, this also puts her off Billy '...seeing Billy/with that old hobo
/made me think of Billy/as a hobo". The author uses repetition here to state the fact that they are 'hobos'. Later when Caitlin invites Billy and Old
Bill to her house for dinner "Old Bill called [her] 'Miss'/and offered [her] a box of chocolates". This showed Caitlin that Old Bill was a nice man
so at the end of the novel Caitlin reflected on what she thought of Old Bill "I start to cry/because I think of Old Bill/and what I thought/when I first
saw him." The author has used repetition of the word 'I' to show that Caitlin is ashamed of her original thoughts on Old Bill. In the novel The Simple
Gift the author has used techniques to develop Caitlin's opinion of Old Bill from being a no good hobo to a nice

Analysis Of The Simple Gift By Steven Herrick
Judgement. It is a common human trait. We first judge people by their appearance, how they look, what they're wearing. Then as we talk to them,
our opinion changes; we immediately disregarded any who speaks crudely as disrespectful, anyone who speaks poshly as stuck up. Negative
stereotypes come easily to us while positive ones are rare. In The Simple Gift, author Steven Herrick builds and writes as characters that sometimes
play into their given stereotype and sometimes completely play against them. To the casual eye, Billy looks like the typical bad boy. A boy that ran
away from home, showing his rebellious tendencies. A boy that would most certainly be a bad influence over anyone. However, as we take a closer
look into Billy's true personality,

The Simple Gift Analysis
Through studying texts one can gain a greater understanding of how individuals can transition into more prosperous and positive phases of life as
well into new and differing social contexts. This is explored in the texts The Simple Gift composed by Steven Herrick, as Billy transitions into a new
life in the town of Bendarat and in Jasper Jones as Charlie develops new outlooks in his life and moves into social contexts he would have once
perceived as taboo. Through the portrayal of transitions in these texts, the responder gains a wider perception how circumstances can create transitions
into new phases of life and gain a greater understanding of contrasting social contexts.
Transitions can result in entering new social contexts, resulting in a new phase of life in which a positive outlook on life is attained. Herrick is able to
convey this in The Simple Gift as Billy needs to transition into a more satisfying and fulfilling life through entering a completely new social context.
Assonance and profanity in "each deadbeat no–hoper s–thole lonely downtrodden house" emphasises and drives home his resentment for his current
social context and highlights the need for Billy to transition into a new stage in his life, while the use of first person in "I'm not proud, I'm sixteen
and soon to be homeless" foreshadows that from Billy's point of view transition is going to be of a confronting nature. A stark contrast is seen between
this description and that of Billy's use of positive

Analysis Of The Gift Outright
The Gift Outright Robert Frost describes his love for the New England. The Gift Outright is a patriotic poem. This poem was composed in 1936 and
published in 1941, a few months later the United States entered World War 2. In the poem The Gift Outright reveals his patriotic fervor and presents
the history of his country since the days of colonialism. Frost uses metaphors, similes, naturalistic diction to address his love for his country and what
the soldiers feel. The poem is written in iambic pentameter and free verse. There is sixteen lines in this poem. This sonnet follows the
ABAB–CDCD–EFEF–GG. The sophisticated speaker manages the poetic elements to evoke the passion for his country and his and the soldiers'
feelings as a whole. In...show more content...
In the closing couplet, with syntax and enjambment, the speaker continues express the withholdings of the feelings towards the land. In line 13 the
grammar and tone begins to change compared to the other lines, there is parentheses, and ominous. Something we were withholding made us weak
until we found out that it was ourselves we were withholding from our land of living. Frost is suggesting that the Americans' withheld some power.
And forthwith found salvation is surrender. Such as we were we gave ourselves outright (The deed of gift was many deeds of war). Here we can see a
paradox in the poem expressing both line 1–6 shows owning the land and now in line 13 irony of gift and war. Frost is explaining how the colonials
had gotten to that point. In line 15 there is vagueness, unpossession is referred –showing the land is still developing at this point. Clearly, this what not
an easy battle to be won overnight. We know nothing was given but something seized. To the land vaguely realizing westward. Frost is showing us a
mirror to the spirit of ambition and exploitation which lies below the surface of the official American character. In the last lines but still unstoried,
artless, unenhanced, such as she was, such as she would become. Frost is personifying the nation as a female entity is a crucial and abrupt turn at

Personal Essay : The Gift Of Life
The gift of life is one of the most valuable and precious things that we have been given. When I take a step back and think about what life means to
me, I think of a life full of experience and taking everything into perspective, living each day like it could be my last. I very much cherish my life
and live it to the fullest. I love everyone in my life and would do anything for my friends and family. Life is full of ups and downs and even when times
are tough I pray and do what I can do and leave the rest up to the good Lord. One thing that is always tough and hard to swallow in life is the death
of a family member or friend. It is never easy and something that can really impact someone's life in a positive and negative way. A positive way in
which if that family member or loved one was suffering and although hard to watch you know they are in a better place in heaven. Negative in a
way that knowing that the one you loved isn't there anymore and all you have is the memories of the good times. It's never easy when a loved one
passes, their physical presence vanished and it almost feels as if there is a empty spot in your heart wanting them back. I have had many experiences
with the death of loved ones and I can relay to you that it takes a huge toll on the heart. Everyone has different ways of dealing and coping with death.
All the tears crying brings also the grieving and sadness. But the grieving will not get them back but it is just our human reaction. One of the things

I Am The Giver Essay
I am the Giver. When I was 12 years old, I was been selected. Since that time, I was the only receiver in the community.
This make me very confused. I had no idea about what receiver is, but I can figure out this is the most important job in the community because of the
expression in people's face. They looked at me with their eyes widened in awe. My parent were very pride of me. Their faces filled with joy.
The next day after school, I went to Annex to accepted training. I was so excited when I saw the strange room. Lots of book in here are I never seen
before. Oh, in fact, I was the receiver just like Jonas right now. The Giver looked at me very kindly, he said:

merry–go–round; a kitten to play with; a picnic. Sometimes I chose one just because I knew it would make her laugh, and I so treasured the sound
of that laughter in this room that had always been so silent. But she wanted experience everything. She knew that it was her responsibility. So she
asked me for more difficult memories. I gave her loneliness and loss. When the first one ended, she appeared stunned. I backed off, gave her more
little delights. But everything changed, once she knew about pain. I could saw it in her eyes. I could't bring myself to inflict physical pain on her. But
I gave her anguish of many kinds. Poverty, and hunger, and

Gift Giving A Social Phenomenon
Gift giving is a social phenomenon that is a part of our traditions to demonstrate to the people their intention of love and respect. People give gifts in
different rituals because it is part of our society. Gift giving started before the eighteenth century and now it is very important action in this century.
Berking shows that gift giving is a cultural practice in our society and do not rely on economic or politic action.
The cultural practice of gift giving is part of framing society and it is different situation. Indeed, it is very important in individual in this modern
society we living in. Gifts may be given in Christmas or birthdays and each celebration have its own wrapping to give meaning to person , and
present whatever it is Christmas or birthday celebration. There is a role in gift giving that if a person give a gift to someone should give back when
the other one have celebration.
In Christmas there is gift exchange and it have four structural features. These components are, the gift , the action of exchanging gifts, the receiver
understanding the meaning of the gift and action or feeling towards the gift (Berking, 4). The gift giving is different from age or gender and if
someone real close to should know or spend more time in changing the gift. The economic way does not effect the give if it was cheap or expensive
but it is about the value of person giving to the other. The person spend time in managing the gift and it give sense of respect and memory values to

Carlotta Rodriguez's The Gift
The short story The Gift has many layers with in itself on different topics. The topics of discrimination, feminism, friendship, tradition, and power all
can be seen in this story. Many literary devices can be seen in the story also. Such as: theme, metaphor, tone and symbol. This story unlike most as

into Scared Heart.
I felt that feminism was evident in The Gift rather strongly. One paragraph about the head nun, Mother Artigas, showed how much of a feminist the
author most likely was. "She had had an extensive education and had acquired more than one doctoral degree at foreign universities. She
believed that women had an undeniable right to knowledge, having been unjustly barred from it by men for centuries, and the only obstacle that for a
while had made her hesitate on her decision to enter the convent had been the clergy's traditional feminization of ignorance. She herself had at one
time wanted to become a writer and had played with the idea of challenging the social and literary conventions of her world that condemned women to
silence or, what was worse, to euphemistic, romantic verses, chock full of ruby bleeding hearts, cooing love affairs, and lace–flounced babies, but that
hadn't the slightest notion of history, politics, or science. She had by now renounced her fantasy of a literary life, but had stuck to her guns in certain

The Gift Of A Gift
This story is about a man giving a gift that is intended to show gratitude to a stranger's good deed that moved him years ago. An old woman with her
two grandchildren went to the supermarket for some groceries. The little boy and girl accompanied their grandmother, helping her out with some
groceries. While the little girl was picking a few things at the market, her grandmother told her that the items she had chosen were not necessarily,
although, the grandmother told her granddaughter to choose something special for her grandfather since it was his birthday, while he was home
waiting for them to come back with the groceries. The little girl picked up a cake from the pastry section and ran to the counter where her grandmother
and brother were waiting, ready to check out. When the cashier added the cake to the other items it made the grocery purchase higher than the money
they had in hand, so the grandmother pleaded with the cashier to void the cake out of her transaction. The granddaughter pleaded with the grandmother
that she wanted the cake and that she would not have asked for anything else. The grandmother had no choice by not buying the cake. As soon as they
left the market a gentleman at the market decided to purchase the cake that the young girl left at the market. The grandmother and her grandchildren on
their way home the gentle man approached the young girl and the grandmother with the cake that the young girl chose for her grandfather. The

Stephen Herrick's The Simple Gift
Stephen Herrick's "The Simple Gift" represents 'exploring transitions' through the idea that in order to successfully transition and achieve autonomy
people need support from others. Herrick establishes the elements of trauma and grief through the structure of verse form novel. Similar ideas are also
demonstrated in the related text "Stand By Me" directed by Rob Reiner. Both composers use to forms and features of their texts to assist with the
characterisation of adolescents to demonstrate 'exploring transitions' and help the audience enhance a new perception of the character's lives. The
central character of "The Simple Gift", sixteen year old Billy Luckett, escapes from the known by leaving home on his own accord to venture out into

Billy's growth is demonstrated as he becomes a 'different' individual from the beginning of the narrative poem showing positive thinking "sure
there's hope in the world...even for hobos like us". The poem The Hobo Sky features positive connotation as Old Bill heads 'north' as 'he
experiences life that we planned' with his daughter. He has 'crossed the tracks', which represents that he, as well as Billy have benefited from their
shared experiences. It is through their relationships that they have been able to provide each other and signifies the importance of the gift of
protection and security that's needed to belong to society and others. My related text "Stand By Me" revolves around Gordie Lachance, a twelve
going on thirteen year old boy living in the fictional town of Castle Rock, Oregon, America in the September of 1959. Gordie's transition, while he
is exploring physically to find the dead body of Ray Brower, is more emotional. In the movie we see an insecure, defeated kid, who never seems to
match the memory of his deceased older brother in the eyes of his parents. He progressively becomes sure of himself and more confident due to the

Understanding nourishes belonging... a lack of understanding prevents it.
Demonstrate how your prescribed text and ONE other related text of your own choosing represent this interpretation of belonging.
Belonging is primarily about acceptance and developing a connection and identity. Belonging implies an understanding of the needs of the individual
and the group and negotiating a way towards acceptance of those needs. Conversely, exclusion emerges when the individual and the group fail to
understand each other. Steven Herrick's "The Simple Gift" is the story of three protagonists who develop friendships and ultimately change their

Herrick shows that a relationship has 'centred' Billy. His life has direction, routine and meaning. Billy's identity at first was seen as a loner, he was
isolated and a rebel. His mother was absent and his relationship with his father was intimidating. The lack of connection to family extends to Old
Bill, whose daughter and wife died, and to Freya and Danny, who do not have the guidance of responsible adults. Herrick symbolises his
disconnection and loneliness in 'I didn't go inside for hours./I looked through the back window/watching him/reading the paper/in front of the
television/as if nothing happened'. Billy's sense of belonging allows him to reforms his identity. Herrick shows this by juxtaposing Billy eating like a
hobo in the first person narration in 'And wait for the family of five to leave. / I can see dessert/ waiting for me' and later eating like a refined mature
adult via the descriptive language in 'with a white tablecloth/and napkins/ and proper cutlery and plates.' Comparatively, Freya grows up after Danny
helps her deal with her miscarriage. This highlights that a person's identity is defined by their connection to others. Both composers show an
understanding of each other, allow them to nourish one another.
Belonging is as a complex process by which people develop links with others, places and things. It is focused on acceptance and developing a
connection and identity

What Makes Gift Giving A Gift?

My Favorite Gift

  • 1. My Favorite Gift Do you remember the first time you were truly happy? Filled with joy and hope on what was to come? The first time I experienced this feeling came on a Christmas Morning when Santa successfully delivered the one present on my reasonably small wish list . It started as a development of socks, shoes, and sweaters, moving to books and a fashion of corduroy pants my mom seemed to love. As the gifts that I should be " Thankful for " came in throughout the years, I took them up to my room, set them aside and began to pray for something other than a decorative wool cardigan my grandmother would give me. Not sure if it could be considered an Ugly Sweater, I always had to accept the as it was; a piece of cloth only to be worn as pajamas inside my home. As my friends from school would come back with assortments of japanese erasers, games of mario kart and star wars for the wii and numerous sets of legos, I decided I was going to take matters into my own hands and ask for an Ipod for next year. As the seasons changed, I continued to think about my one and only christmas wish. An Ipod, but not Just any Ipod, the ipod shuffle. A new development of technology that would change the world forever. A gift so special I began to look forward to shocked look on my classmates faces more than the excitement of the present alone. As christmas had finally arrived, I followed the star of bethlehem that had lead me down stairs to the presents under the tree. Eyeing a small box, I began to open Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 2. Essay On My Favourite Birthday Gift It was my seventh birthday and also one of the best days of my entire life. I had just opened up the last of my presents and was thanking my family for all the gifts they had given me for my birthday. When I heard a bark and turned around to see my dad holding what would be my favorite birthday present that I ever received. She was completely house trained in under a week and learned how to play fetch in two weeks. Occasionally of course her playfulness turned our games of fetch into games of me chasing her around the yard trying to get the tennis ball back. It was also a great responsibility that my parents entrusted me to take care of. I had to feed her, keep her groomed, and of course teach her the correct way to act. My dad taught me that you always make sure that your dog is fed, before you feed yourself. This lesson I didn't figure out to later in life was meant for not only my...show more content... The second thing I had to teach her was not to chew up my mom's stuffed bears. She wouldn't bother them unless she was home alone. So, the third day I came home from school and she had the bears chewed up, I spanked her like a mother spanks her child. Scarlet never chewed another bear again in her life. Then of course I taught her to play fetch. Scarlet took to playing fetch very quickly. Well, if I am being completely honest she took to playing make human chase dog to get ball back very quickly. It took about two weeks to get the correct outcome of Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 3. The Act Of Gift Giving The act of gift giving has become largely commercialized in the Western world. Diving a level deeper by converting a gifted item into an item avaiable for resale creates an even more commerical approach to this act of kindness. In the film Babel(2006), the director Alejandro GonzГЎlez IГ±ГЎrritu employs the message that when something is converted into a capital good it becomes dangerous. Babel(2006) follows four interrelated sets of situations and characters across the world united by one item. A gun that was gifted from a Japanese man to a farmer in Morocco is sold and later used in an accidental shooting of an American woman visiting Morocco. This is an act of capital conversion because it turns something that was given as a gift for no...show more content... First, Abdullah's two sons accidentally shoot an American tourist who was riding on a tour bus. One of the sons is later shot and killed during a shootout with investigating authorities. The woman taking care of the American tourist's children, Amelia, is back in San Diego. She is questioned at the border, and then she is deported for being an illegal immigrant after her driver tries to flee from the police. The Japanese man called Mr. Wataya, who originally gave the gun as a gift, has a deaf teenage daughter. His daughter is lonely and makes an advance on an investigator that goes to their apartment to ask questions about the rifle. She is rejected and continues to suffer loneliness. Circling back to the American tourist couple, after the wife is shot she is eventually taken to a hospital and recovers. Essentially, all of the conflict in the film can be traced back to that rifle. The subtle message portrayed here by the director is that once the rifle became a piece of capital goods and no longer a gift given in kindness, it was cursed in a way and only created trouble. One interesting element about Amelia's predicament was that it wasn't until she changed her story from being an Aunt to the children to a paid caretaker that trouble started. This is another example of capital conversion in motion, as the film seems to show very subtly. According to one study, about Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 4. Narrative Essay About A Birthday Gift I woke up to the feeling to excitement, eager for the day to come, I ran downstairs ready to see what awaits my arrival. I come down to streamers hanging in the color of happiness, and a sign that read the words I was waiting to hear. "Happy Birthday Honey!", screamed my mom. I was so happy to see everything it was finally my birthday, I was finally twelve!! I couldn't believe it! After taking it all in I decided to get dressed before we started to do anything. As I walk up the stairs I lay out the events of the day in my head– eat breakfast... open presents... make food... pack car... leave. Then I put on some of my favorite clothes and run back downstairs to start breakfast and open presents. After I started the waffles I head over to the family...show more content... "Yep I'm all good!!!!" my youngest sister said, easily calming down my mom. While we were all ready we knew we wernt leaving for another two hours and had to make the best of it. In the kitchen I got out all the necessary ingredients. We were going camping with friends and I was helping to make thedinner for tonight. Since it was my birthday I got to pick. I chose burgers, they're my favorite, at least the ones I make are. I quickly made all the burgers although it took me quite a while because I had glanced at the clock only to see that an hour had passed. I was sad because I thought I would have time to build my lego set but it was time to go and it okay, because camping is always fun. After a long endless car ride we made it to our destination and we went to the small store to check in to our cabin. It was great to finally be there because my sisters were getting to be really annoying "Be QUIET!!" "no you be quiet and scooch over!!!" "JUST MOVE OVER!!!!!!" Even though it was winter time I saw ice cream and my temptations got the best of me. I got some dippin dots and then we drove down to where our cabins were. As we unpacked our things, other fmailies started to arrive and I was wating for my frineds, the moment I saw them I was gone for good It was almost dinner time and my dad and some of the other dads were starting to cook. I wanted to help but decided "ah whatever" I'll just go out on the lake and wait til Get more content on HelpWriting.net

  • 6. How has the author used techniques to develop the three main characters in The Simple Gift? The free verse poetry novel The Simple Gift written by Steven Herrick uses poetry techniques to develop the three main characters in the novel. The development for Billy's character is shown through the techniques internal rhyme, alliteration and repetition. Old Bill's character develops through the use of repetition. Caitlin's characters opinion on Old Billy develops shown through repetition. The author of The Simple Gift has used multiple techniques to show the development of Billy's homeless state and his perspective on learning. At the beginning of the novel the author uses internal rhyme which shows that Billy thinks he can learn everything from reading books "I learnt all I need to know/in the books on the banks". Herrick has done this to empathise that Billy is not at school but at the river bank reading. When Billy decides to become homeless he has no education and no place to stay"I'm...show more content... When Caitlin first sees Old Bill with Billy, she sees him as a dirty no good hobo, this also puts her off Billy '...seeing Billy/with that old hobo /made me think of Billy/as a hobo". The author uses repetition here to state the fact that they are 'hobos'. Later when Caitlin invites Billy and Old Bill to her house for dinner "Old Bill called [her] 'Miss'/and offered [her] a box of chocolates". This showed Caitlin that Old Bill was a nice man so at the end of the novel Caitlin reflected on what she thought of Old Bill "I start to cry/because I think of Old Bill/and what I thought/when I first saw him." The author has used repetition of the word 'I' to show that Caitlin is ashamed of her original thoughts on Old Bill. In the novel The Simple Gift the author has used techniques to develop Caitlin's opinion of Old Bill from being a no good hobo to a nice Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 7. Analysis Of The Simple Gift By Steven Herrick Judgement. It is a common human trait. We first judge people by their appearance, how they look, what they're wearing. Then as we talk to them, our opinion changes; we immediately disregarded any who speaks crudely as disrespectful, anyone who speaks poshly as stuck up. Negative stereotypes come easily to us while positive ones are rare. In The Simple Gift, author Steven Herrick builds and writes as characters that sometimes play into their given stereotype and sometimes completely play against them. To the casual eye, Billy looks like the typical bad boy. A boy that ran away from home, showing his rebellious tendencies. A boy that would most certainly be a bad influence over anyone. However, as we take a closer look into Billy's true personality, Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 8. The Simple Gift Analysis Through studying texts one can gain a greater understanding of how individuals can transition into more prosperous and positive phases of life as well into new and differing social contexts. This is explored in the texts The Simple Gift composed by Steven Herrick, as Billy transitions into a new life in the town of Bendarat and in Jasper Jones as Charlie develops new outlooks in his life and moves into social contexts he would have once perceived as taboo. Through the portrayal of transitions in these texts, the responder gains a wider perception how circumstances can create transitions into new phases of life and gain a greater understanding of contrasting social contexts. Transitions can result in entering new social contexts, resulting in a new phase of life in which a positive outlook on life is attained. Herrick is able to convey this in The Simple Gift as Billy needs to transition into a more satisfying and fulfilling life through entering a completely new social context. Assonance and profanity in "each deadbeat no–hoper s–thole lonely downtrodden house" emphasises and drives home his resentment for his current social context and highlights the need for Billy to transition into a new stage in his life, while the use of first person in "I'm not proud, I'm sixteen and soon to be homeless" foreshadows that from Billy's point of view transition is going to be of a confronting nature. A stark contrast is seen between this description and that of Billy's use of positive Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 9. Analysis Of The Gift Outright The Gift Outright Robert Frost describes his love for the New England. The Gift Outright is a patriotic poem. This poem was composed in 1936 and published in 1941, a few months later the United States entered World War 2. In the poem The Gift Outright reveals his patriotic fervor and presents the history of his country since the days of colonialism. Frost uses metaphors, similes, naturalistic diction to address his love for his country and what the soldiers feel. The poem is written in iambic pentameter and free verse. There is sixteen lines in this poem. This sonnet follows the ABAB–CDCD–EFEF–GG. The sophisticated speaker manages the poetic elements to evoke the passion for his country and his and the soldiers' feelings as a whole. In...show more content... In the closing couplet, with syntax and enjambment, the speaker continues express the withholdings of the feelings towards the land. In line 13 the grammar and tone begins to change compared to the other lines, there is parentheses, and ominous. Something we were withholding made us weak until we found out that it was ourselves we were withholding from our land of living. Frost is suggesting that the Americans' withheld some power. And forthwith found salvation is surrender. Such as we were we gave ourselves outright (The deed of gift was many deeds of war). Here we can see a paradox in the poem expressing both line 1–6 shows owning the land and now in line 13 irony of gift and war. Frost is explaining how the colonials had gotten to that point. In line 15 there is vagueness, unpossession is referred –showing the land is still developing at this point. Clearly, this what not an easy battle to be won overnight. We know nothing was given but something seized. To the land vaguely realizing westward. Frost is showing us a mirror to the spirit of ambition and exploitation which lies below the surface of the official American character. In the last lines but still unstoried, artless, unenhanced, such as she was, such as she would become. Frost is personifying the nation as a female entity is a crucial and abrupt turn at Get more content on HelpWriting.net

  • 11. Personal Essay : The Gift Of Life The gift of life is one of the most valuable and precious things that we have been given. When I take a step back and think about what life means to me, I think of a life full of experience and taking everything into perspective, living each day like it could be my last. I very much cherish my life and live it to the fullest. I love everyone in my life and would do anything for my friends and family. Life is full of ups and downs and even when times are tough I pray and do what I can do and leave the rest up to the good Lord. One thing that is always tough and hard to swallow in life is the death of a family member or friend. It is never easy and something that can really impact someone's life in a positive and negative way. A positive way in which if that family member or loved one was suffering and although hard to watch you know they are in a better place in heaven. Negative in a way that knowing that the one you loved isn't there anymore and all you have is the memories of the good times. • 12. I Am The Giver Essay I am the Giver. When I was 12 years old, I was been selected. Since that time, I was the only receiver in the community. This make me very confused. I had no idea about what receiver is, but I can figure out this is the most important job in the community because of the expression in people's face. They looked at me with their eyes widened in awe. My parent were very pride of me. Their faces filled with joy. The next day after school, I went to Annex to accepted training. I was so excited when I saw the strange room. Lots of book in here are I never seen before. Oh, in fact, I was the receiver just like Jonas right now. The Giver looked at me very kindly, he said: "Now you are the next the giver. I am...show more content... I found that the new Receiver is my daughter. I love her. But she was the Giver so she must accepted the training. It broke my heart, to transfer pain to her. But it was m job. It was what I had to do, the way I have to do to Jonas. Five weeks, that was all. I gave her happy memories: a ride on a merry–go–round; a kitten to play with; a picnic. Sometimes I chose one just because I knew it would make her laugh, and I so treasured the sound of that laughter in this room that had always been so silent. But she wanted experience everything. She knew that it was her responsibility. So she asked me for more difficult memories. I gave her loneliness and loss. When the first one ended, she appeared stunned. I backed off, gave her more little delights. But everything changed, once she knew about pain. I could saw it in her eyes. I could't bring myself to inflict physical pain on her. But I gave her anguish of many kinds. Poverty, and hunger, and Get more content on HelpWriting.net

People give gifts in different rituals because it is part of our society. Gift giving started before the eighteenth century and now it is very important action in this century. • 14. Carlotta Rodriguez's The Gift The short story The Gift has many layers with in itself on different topics. The topics of discrimination, feminism, friendship, tradition, and power all can be seen in this story. Many literary devices can be seen in the story also. Such as: theme, metaphor, tone and symbol. This story unlike most as that I couldn't predict what was going to happen that made the girls leave the school. Just as it says in the beginning paragraph "No one expected Merceditas Cáceres, on the day Carlotta Rodriguez was expelled from the Sacred Heart, to hang her silk sash from the doorknob, drop her medal of the Congregation of the Angels in the alms box, and walk out through the schools' portico arm in arm with her friend, head...show more content... She tells her about the way the hills look and the town works, and every little detail and this brings such pleasure to Merceditas. Since Merceditas did not go out into the town she had no friends and Carlotta was perfect for her. Unlike Carlotta, Merceditas has an important family name and easily gets into Scared Heart. I felt that feminism was evident in The Gift rather strongly. One paragraph about the head nun, Mother Artigas, showed how much of a feminist the author most likely was. "She had had an extensive education and had acquired more than one doctoral degree at foreign universities. She believed that women had an undeniable right to knowledge, having been unjustly barred from it by men for centuries, and the only obstacle that for a while had made her hesitate on her decision to enter the convent had been the clergy's traditional feminization of ignorance. She herself had at one time wanted to become a writer and had played with the idea of challenging the social and literary conventions of her world that condemned women to silence or, what was worse, to euphemistic, romantic verses, chock full of ruby bleeding hearts, cooing love affairs, and lace–flounced babies, but that hadn't the slightest notion of history, politics, or science. She had by now renounced her fantasy of a literary life, but had stuck to her guns in certain aspects of Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 15. The Gift Of A Gift This story is about a man giving a gift that is intended to show gratitude to a stranger's good deed that moved him years ago. An old woman with her two grandchildren went to the supermarket for some groceries. The little boy and girl accompanied their grandmother, helping her out with some groceries. While the little girl was picking a few things at the market, her grandmother told her that the items she had chosen were not necessarily, although, the grandmother told her granddaughter to choose something special for her grandfather since it was his birthday, while he was home waiting for them to come back with the groceries. The little girl picked up a cake from the pastry section and ran to the counter where her grandmother and brother were waiting, ready to check out. When the cashier added the cake to the other items it made the grocery purchase higher than the money they had in hand, so the grandmother pleaded with the cashier to void the cake out of her transaction. The granddaughter pleaded with the grandmother that she wanted the cake and that she would not have asked for anything else. The grandmother had no choice by not buying the cake. As soon as they left the market a gentleman at the market decided to purchase the cake that the young girl left at the market. The grandmother and her grandchildren on their way home the gentle man approached the young girl and the grandmother with the cake that the young girl chose for her grandfather. The grandmother stated to Get more content on HelpWriting.net

  • 17. Stephen Herrick's The Simple Gift Stephen Herrick's "The Simple Gift" represents 'exploring transitions' through the idea that in order to successfully transition and achieve autonomy people need support from others. Herrick establishes the elements of trauma and grief through the structure of verse form novel. Similar ideas are also demonstrated in the related text "Stand By Me" directed by Rob Reiner. Both composers use to forms and features of their texts to assist with the characterisation of adolescents to demonstrate 'exploring transitions' and help the audience enhance a new perception of the character's lives. The central character of "The Simple Gift", sixteen year old Billy Luckett, escapes from the known by leaving home on his own accord to venture out into the...show more content... Billy's growth is demonstrated as he becomes a 'different' individual from the beginning of the narrative poem showing positive thinking "sure there's hope in the world...even for hobos like us". The poem The Hobo Sky features positive connotation as Old Bill heads 'north' as 'he experiences life that we planned' with his daughter. He has 'crossed the tracks', which represents that he, as well as Billy have benefited from their shared experiences. It is through their relationships that they have been able to provide each other and signifies the importance of the gift of protection and security that's needed to belong to society and others. My related text "Stand By Me" revolves around Gordie Lachance, a twelve going on thirteen year old boy living in the fictional town of Castle Rock, Oregon, America in the September of 1959. Gordie's transition, while he is exploring physically to find the dead body of Ray Brower, is more emotional. In the movie we see an insecure, defeated kid, who never seems to match the memory of his deceased older brother in the eyes of his parents. He progressively becomes sure of himself and more confident due to the support and encouragement of his Get more content on HelpWriting.net

Demonstrate how your prescribed text and ONE other related text of your own choosing represent this interpretation of belonging. Belonging is primarily about acceptance and developing a connection and identity. Belonging implies an understanding of the needs of the individual and the group and negotiating a way towards acceptance of those needs. Conversely, exclusion emerges when the individual and the group fail to understand each other. Steven Herrick's "The Simple Gift" is the story of three protagonists who develop friendships and ultimately change their perceptions of self. Comparatively, John Duigan's "The Year My Voice Broke" explores how the relationships ...show more content... Herrick shows that a relationship has 'centred' Billy. His life has direction, routine and meaning. Billy's identity at first was seen as a loner, he was isolated and a rebel. His mother was absent and his relationship with his father was intimidating. The lack of connection to family extends to Old Bill, whose daughter and wife died, and to Freya and Danny, who do not have the guidance of responsible adults. Herrick symbolises his disconnection and loneliness in 'I didn't go inside for hours./I looked through the back window/watching him/reading the paper/in front of the television/as if nothing happened'. Billy's sense of belonging allows him to reforms his identity. Herrick shows this by juxtaposing Billy eating like a hobo in the first person narration in 'And wait for the family of five to leave. / I can see dessert/ waiting for me' and later eating like a refined mature adult via the descriptive language in 'with a white tablecloth/and napkins/ and proper cutlery and plates.' Comparatively, Freya grows up after Danny helps her deal with her miscarriage. This highlights that a person's identity is defined by their connection to others. Both composers show an understanding of each other, allow them to nourish one another. Belonging is as a complex process by which people develop links with others, places and things. It is focused on acceptance and developing a connection and identity Get more content on HelpWriting.net

The author describes the economy from the perspective of the people of Kabre as an almost shared community. As the author lived in this community he describes through his residency how he lived and adapted by figuring out how this system works. Residents will spend half of cash brought in to surplus into gift giving in anticipation of reciprocation. The author also found that gifts such as meat and beer were accepted, however sometimes failed to understand what gifts were appropriate. In one instance, gifted uncooked meat, which was a sign of disrespect, as the meat was not treated in the traditional ways.
