Emily Dickinson has always been one of my favorite poets. I love her poems because of the pain and sorrow they contain to which I can easily relate.
She often writes of funerals and death. I myself have watched too many friends die and have wondered why God would let this happen. At every
funeral, some well meaning mourner would say––,"The Lord called him" or "She's with Jesus now." My gut reaction was always, "Bullshit." Then
Emily Dickinson's poem "My Life Closed Twice Before its Close" would come to mind, especially the last two lines––,"Parting is all we know of
Heaven and all we need of hell." More than anything I've ever heard those lines summarize the doubts I've had about an afterlife and the pain of those
left behind.

However, it wasn't only me. Every time one of my friends would die, the whole crowd of us would greatly increase our drug and alcohol intake. This
would inevitably lead to the death of another one of us and so the cycle continued.
None of us believed in heaven, but we all knew the private hell of being left behind on this earth to suffer. The dead were at least at peace in their
little cushioned boxes. The rest of us had to keep living and wondering who would be next. I believe in hell on earth and during the last two and a half
years that I have been straight, I've come to appreciate this even more.
I don't keep the same friends that I used to. I can't if I want to remain sane, but I often see members of my old crowd around the neighborhood and in
the bar on dart night. I see them sitting in front of the post office drinking beers when they should be working or going to school or taking care of
their children. I see them coming home when I leave my house in the morning. I see them coming out of the bathroom in the bar with cocaine still
clinging to their nostrils and I wonder who will be next.
There was another death a week ago Sunday––a heart attack caused by an overdose of cocaine. A twenty–eight year old woman should not die of a

Emily Dickinson, recognized as one of the greatest American poets of the nineteenth century, was born December 10, 1830 in Amherst, Massachusetts
(Benfey, 1). Dickinson's greatness and accomplishments were not always recognized. In her time, women were not recognized as serious writers and

Only five poems can be dated prior to 1858, the year in which she began gathering her work into hand– written copies bound loosely with thread to
make small packets called ?????. She sent these fives early poems to friends in letters or as valentines. One of them was published anonymously
without her permission in the Springfield Republican in 1852 ( ). This was the first time any of Emily's writings were published. After 1858, she
apparently convinced herself that she had a genuine talent, because now, the packets were carefully stored in an ebony box probably awaiting
discovery by future readers or publishers. Perhaps Emily knew that her writing was too far advanced for her time and that her accomplishments would
be recognized and given the recognition that they deserved in the future.
Publication remained a considerable conflict throughout her writing. A publisher for her writing was never easily arranged. She befriended Samuel
Bowles, the editor of the Republican and for four years sent him poems and letters for publication. Because Bowles did not comprehend Dickinson's
poems only two were published, and even those were published anonymously. Both poems were heavily edited and given titles that she had not given
or was not aware of. Only five other poems were published in her lifetime, each altered by editors.

Civil War , worried for her friends and families lives, death increased in frequency to be a dominant theme in her writings. After 1878, the year of her

In the poem, Dickinson is saying nature is all around us and sometimes we are scared of it; however, sometimes we don't even notice its beauty.
"Water is taught by thirst" is another brilliant example of how Dickinson taught life lessons through her poetry and nature. The lesson in this

During the 1850's Emily Dickinson was not someone who blended in with the crowd, she was a nonconformist. Her nonconformity allowed her to
view nature, religion and death differently than most people. Emily Dickinson stood apart from her peers physically, religiously, and socially which

She did not conform socially because she was not trying too, she had no desire to be like everyone else. On line 5 of her poem "I'm Nobody! Who are

She viewed conformity as a chain around the neck or enslavement to society. On line 8 of her poem "Much Madness is divinest sense"it says "Demur–
You're straightway dangerous– and handled with a chain" (line 8). This line is saying that people who stand out or cause doubt in a situation are
dangerous and are eventually chained or tied up so that they will no longer cause doubt in other people's minds. People are scared of things that are
different and would rather chain them up in the corner than allow them to be different. Richard Wilbur wrote that "Emily Dickinson found that she must
refuse to become a professing Christian. (pg. 1131)" This was yet another way that she stood out and did not conform to society. While many people
were professing Christians during that time, she chose to worship in a different way. She was not concerned with what others thought, she was more
concerned with how she was going to do things and this changed the way she wrote poetry.

The most astonishing example of startling and thought–provoking moments of Dickinson's poetry comes in "The Sould Has Bandaged Moments,"
where the poet's two extremes of human emotion are dealt with in one poem; despair and joy. She opens with harsh moments of lonliness and grief –
"With long fingers – caress her freezing hair." The 'soul', or spirit, is portrayed as wounded, damaged, needing to be wrapped in self–protective and
restraining bandages, when the grotesque parody of love comes to prey on her. "Sip, Goblin, from the very lips The Lover – hovered – o'er –"
Through immediate fluidity Dickinson's poem reaches ecstacy "The soul has moments of Escape–" A full spectrum of emotion is observed here in its
urgency. I think the most thought–provoking moment of the peice comes in the final enslavement of the poet's spirit. "When, Felon led along, with
shackles on the plummed feet." She explain in so few words that the recapture of the spirit is more painful after a taste of freedom. I think it is clear
through the exploration of Dickinson's astounding, unconventional poetry that there are indeed startling moments and examples of thought–prokoving

Emily Dickinson was a well–known poet of her time. She also introduced a new wayform of writing poetry. Emily Dickinson wasn't the 'typical' child
you would expect. Emily Dickinson had to overcome many loses and obstacles in her life to create the poetry that she is known for today.
Emily Elizabeth Dickinson was born on December 10th, 1830, in Amherst Massachusetts to Emily Norcross Dickinson and Edward Dickinson who
were very well known during this time and had a high social status. Emily Dickinson was one out of three children. Her sibling's names were Austin and
Lavinia. Austin was the oldest, then Emily, then Lavinia (Kirk 10). Like her mother, Emily Dickinson often fell ill resulting in her having to spend

Her earlier poems were livelier and more cheerful. Her poetry was heavily influenced by Walt Whitman, John Keats, Robert and Elizabeth Barrett
Browning (Emily 1). As her reclusive life progressed, her poems became sadder.
After 20 years of living in isolation, she died on May 15th, 1886. She was 56 years old. Her sister, Lavinia, found her room filled with books
containing a large amount of poems that her sister had written. Only then, did the literary world get to experience and enjoy her writing.
Emily Dickinson overcame many loses and obstacles in her life to create the poetry that she is known for today. Her poems are widely read to this day
