GUILLAIN BARRE SYNDROME

2.  Guillain barre syndrome
otherwise Landry's
paralysis or Guillain–Barré–
Strohl syndrome, is an
acute polyneuropathy, a disorder
affecting the peripheral nervous
system.

5. It is an acute , rapidly progressing
and potentially fatal form of
polyneuritis which affects the
peripheral nervous system which
results in loss of a segmental
demyelination causing loss of
neurotransmission to the
periphery.

7. The syndrome affects
males 1.5 times more
frequently than females
and is typically seen in
adults.

8. Idiopathic
Bacteria – campylobacter jejuni a
gastrointestinal pathogen.
Virus infections- mycoplasma
pneumoniae, cytomegalovirus,
Epstein-Barr virus.
Trauma
Surgery

10. Infectious organism
Destroys the peripheral nerve
myelin
Segmented
demyelination
Loss of
neurotransmission
Cell mediated immunity

11. Neuromuscular respiratory failure
Gradual progressive weakness of
the upper extremities and facial
muscle.(Ascending Paralysis)
Bulbar weakness
Paresthesia
Hypotonia
Areflexia

12. Orthostatic hypotension
Bladder and bowel dysfunction
Muscular aches and cramps

13. CSF ANALYSIS- Elevated
protein level in CSF fluid to
700 mg/dl.(normal protein 15-
45mg/dl)
Electromyogram(EMG)
Nerve conduction studies

14. Corticosteroids : predisone
Immunoglobulin eg:
sandoglobulin
alpha-adrenergic blocking
agents.
Antibiotics
Anti-coagulants

15. Other therapies like :
Plasmapheresis
Mechanical
Ventilatory support

16. Acute pain related to par
aesthesia, muscle aches as
evidenced by facial expression
Risk for aspiration related to
bulbar weakness

17. Self care deficit related to inability
to use muscle to accomplish
activity of daily living
Impaired verbal communication
related to paralysis of the muscle
for speech as evidenced by
inability to talk
