Why Is Reading Important To Me
As you grow up everyone tries to fit within certain standards or stereotypes. Those standards often change as we age of course, but nevertheless,
we try and manipulate ourselves in a very specific way that makes us form to what society believes and does not believe. This has a lot to do with
why I always disliked reading as a child and why my disliking only continued with age. However, it was not always this way, I used to enjoy
reading as a young child and it wasn't until I reached my elementary ages that my disliking came about. In my younger years, I loved reading. My
mother would read me stories every day and I loved the way it would spark my imagination in every way possible. I could so vividly picture what
was happening throughout a story my mind would jump straight in as if I was the main character throughout the whole adventure. As I aged, my
mother would stress the importance of reading and every night I would insist she read me stories before bed....show more content...
I preferred listening to storied by others rather than do it on my own. At time of course I would do some reading on my own but I always found it
extremely challenging. It wasn't until about the second grade; whenever I was first exposed to brick and mortar schooling that my ability to read
became the most challenging. This is about the time I started to notice that all the other kids were excelling with their reading abilities at a much
faster rate than I was. I wasn't fitting in with the normal standards for my age. I felt stupid. I was bumped down into reading lower level books than
the majority of the class and this whole time I never understood why. The only thing I understood was that people looked at me differently. People
judged me base on my ability to do what seemed like a very simple task to so many. But little did they know, I was

Why Is Independent Reading Important
Reading is considered to be the key to success to many teachers, and may even believe reading can bring grades up and eventually help in starting a
career. What I believe is that reading not only encourages me to learn more, but learn more about any life skill from working skills to
communicating skills. I believe that by doing independent reading I will be able to see life more clearly and through fully as I challenge myself with
AP courses and experience what those previous top ten students have dealt with. I do read on my own especially ebooks and audibles. This
independent reading will help in erupting my motivation, dedication, and enjoy the books given as homework by an English teacher.

There is a quote by Walt Disney that I think of wherever I get tired of reading and rather watch a movie and that is "We keep moving forward,
opening up new doors, and doing new things, because we're curious and curiosity keeps leading us down new paths." This quote reminds me that I
wouldn't be where I am if I hadn't read those books at home such as the Harry Potter series and Nancy Drew books when I was small. The curiosity of
wanting to know what happens and enjoying them made me fall in love with reading. Dedication in an AP isn't only about working hard but
wanting to know what interesting new skills I will gain at the end of the course. This is want keeps me going and what allows me to sit through a
whole day of just grabbing a book and eating snacks. These are the times I most enjoy when at home because it not only makes me a better writer in
English but increases my stamina to do all of my homework just so that I can sit in peace and read. I can fully understand the article given for this
essay because I went through this experience of having to learn to enjoy reading. By putting hours of reading every week I was able to develop the
skill of wanting more. Wanting the need to read more interesting stories that involve other author's

Reading Is Indispensable In Reading
Reading is a basic life skill. Undeniably, it is a vital receptive, interactive, and survival mechanism to get through life. It goes along in one's the day to
day routine, from doing the simplest household chores to the more complex following instructions in the world of work. One must read to understand
what he does; likewise, he needs to understand what he reads to comprehend reality. Inarguably, reading is one of the most important contrivances in
life.
Reading has always been an impetus for successful learning. It is an indispensable tool in order to cope with other subjects such as Science, Social
Studies, Mathematics and others. Hence, poor reading ability means poor academic performance. When one can read, greater is his chance to muddle
through everyday learning. Fundamentally, the enhancement of this skill must not be neglected most especially so by the...show more content...
As mentioned in Bölükbaş (2013), Akyol claimed that reading and understanding are combined. It is a receptive skill and therefore very essential
in the cognitive as well as the psycho–social and emotional development of every individual. Reading is not just decoding words from print: the
deep–seated point is comprehension. In other words, reading does not mean anything unless there is comprehension.
For this reasons, the national government has been trying to capitalize on the reading comprehension enhancement of every learner. In 2006, as
initiated by UNESCO, the National EFA Committee (NEC) conceptualized a program identified as Philippine Education for All (EFA) 2015 National
Action Plan. The primary goal of EFA 2015 Plan is to provide fundamental competencies to everyone and to attain functional literacy for all. Moreover,
EFA Plan 2015 assures that every Filipino is functionally knowledgeable and literate who is equipped with the basic learning needs and

Why Should I Read? Essay
Why Should I Read?
"Reading a book is like re–writing it for yourself.... You bring to a novel, anything you read, all your experience of the world. You bring your history
and you read it in your own terms."
Angela Carter (1940–1992), British author.
Why read? Why should I read the book before it comes out in cinema? Why is settling down with a good book better then sitting on the couch
watching The Simpson's reruns? I have often pondered the merits of reading, but you don't realise the advantages until you actually begin reading. Until
I unlocked my first real book I couldn't have dreamed of the wonders and marvels that it opens to you. It's just that when you do read you discover how

With a book to aid the imagination, a person can go anywhere. They can be marooned on a desert island where normal boys change to savage beasts
in Lord of the Flies, they can become Hannibal lector's next victim or even have a romance with the arrogant Mr. Darcy in Pride and Prejudice.
Books hold vast amounts of knowledge. In every book, there is something to learn. Biographies and Diaries can give us accounts of the Second World
War, the sinking of the Titanic, the truth behind celebrities while history books teach us not to make the same mistakes twice.
Children should be encouraged to read from a young age, it helps them with spelling and grammar. It cultivates their young minds and helps them to
believe anything is possible.
In 1966
Margaret Craig McNamara founded Reading Is Fundamental after discovering that the children she volunteered to tutor in Washington, D.C., owned
no or few books. It develops and delivers children's and family literacy programs that help prepare young children for reading and motivate school–age
children to read regularly. Last year, RIF celebrated its 35th anniversary and the milestone of placing more than 200 million books in the hands and
homes of children most at risk of educational failure.
Books are a free pastime and can help to escape from reality.

Why Is Reading Important To Me
Throughout my life, I have remembered times where someone has read to me or I have read a book that has impacted me. From the time when I
was three and my mother would read to me, to today. When I was in kindergarten, I didn't like to read. I believed that reading was unexciting and that
it was a waste of time. Most of the time, I would watch television when I came home from school. Since I didn't like to read and would never practice
reading, I had to acquire help from one of the teachers who would take me out of the regular reading class and she would teach me how to read at
my pace. Even though I believed that reading was unexciting, I love to read now. When I was in first grade, I remember my sister, Lauren, reading
me the Harry Potter series for the first time. She had always adored the Harry Potter series, that she thought she would share her love for the books
with me. I thought it was so amazing that she started reading the books to me because I idolized her. When Lauren read, she would always do
different voices for each character, and I thought it was amazing all the characters she could intimidate. I always looked forward to the next time she

She would always read this series of books called Geronimo Stilton. The series was about a mouse detective who would go on wild adventures
with his friends. I loved the books so much that whenever my family would go to Barnes and Noble, I would have to buy another Geronimo Stilton
book. Of course, I would always buy the book my teacher was reading so I could follow along. On the weekends, I would always read ahead so I could
tell my classmates what happened next before our teacher would read to us again. To this day, I still have my favorite Geronimo Stilton

Why Is Reading So Important?
Why is Reading So Important?
Like most of you, I'm a voracious reader and have taught myself many things throughout my life, whether I thought of these pursuits as study or not. I
began gobbling up books up before I was in Kindergarten and have continued to devour them until now, regardless of where life took me along the way.
This was my mom's influence, of course.
She was a big believer in the value of being a bookworm and instilled the habit in us at an early age – we never had much money growing up, but there
were always books to fill the time and get our imaginations churning.
Some of my fondest memories include sitting in the living room with an afghan blanket pulled to my chin, my breath visible in the frigid air. Reading
about how cruise ships were built or the lives of whales or Native American history. All things I never saw but got to know intimately.

But we had the world at our fingertips, and in those moments you didn't feel the lack.
A reader always knows how to entertain themselves and learn something new. Reading may not always be the most productive way to learn, but there's
no shorter path to the many facets of the human experience than through reading books on a variety of subjects and experiences.
In fact, I think comparing book reading to other learning strategies in the short–term paints an incomplete picture. Because the true power of reading is
how the knowledge links together and snowballs over time.
The reading habit definitely seemed to make me wiser than other people my age, and this is without a determined plan for study – I just swallowed
books wholesale and moved on to the next as interest called.

Why Is It Important To Read?
Reading any books, always left me sleeping. I cannot finish reading non–fiction texts unless I find it so interesting. I understand the text more when I
read slowly than reading it fast because I tend to be more focused when I read it slow than fast and I am able to take note as well while reading it. I
am a passive reader because I usually read simply to get through the text or article and I pay a little attention in identifying the topic sentences and
main ideas as I don't find it interesting to read.

The Importance of Reading
Growing up throughout the years it goes from teachers reading books to your class to books getting assigned to you to read independantly. Most of
the books assigned would be so boring and pointless to read. Normally when I got assigned a book I would just read through it trying to comprehend
some parts of it. I never tried to enjoy it or show an interest in the book. Reading to me was not something I ever enjoyed doing. I did not like reading
for pleasure and for class assignments because I did not think there was a point. When I was reading independent books for pleasure, or an
assignment I would think to myself, "Why, why, why... do we need to do this." Reading to me seemed like a waste of time, until my senior

Mrs. Daniels explained to me I would be making a mistake, because the teacher for this course is one of the best teachers at school. Later on Mr.
Garland would win best teacher of the year for the yearbook. So I decided to try the class out because it was a college class. I figured that's what I
needed going into college in the months to come.
Turns out my counselor, Mrs. Daniels was right. This class was exactly what I needed to increase my vocabulary skills and start enjoying reading.
Since the reading was a requirement for the class, I told myself I needed to read the books to understand it and enjoy what I was reading. Mr.
Garland picked out the first book, and then let us pick from a series of books for the next five books to come. The first book we read was called
"The Bluest Eyes" by Toni Morrison. As most people know this book is a classic, but at times can be confusing. We had to finish the whole book
in two weeks. I thought that task would be nearly impossible, but Mr. Garland made it seem possible by letting us have time in class to read it. We
also discussed in groups what was going on in the book to make it a tad bit more understandable.Reading for the first time was fun instead of a chore.
As the semester went on, I never had to force myself to read any of the books that were assigned to us, but the last few months sometimes were hard to
find any motivation as a senior. Mr.

What Is Reading: Why Reading Is Important?
What is reading?
Reading" is the process which involves looking at a series of written symbols and getting meaning from them. When we read, we use our eyes to receive
written symbols (letters, punctuation marks and spaces) and we use our brain to convert them into words, sentences and paragraphs that communicate
something to us.
Reading can be silent (in our head) or aloud (so that other people can hear).
Reading is a receptive skill by which we receive information but the process of reading also needs speaking skills, so that we can pronounce the
words correctly that we read. Reading is something that we can do by our own that broadens our vocabulary therefore helping in improving other
three skills of speaking writing and listening. So reading is highly valuable skill and activity, so it is advised that English learners should try to read as
much as possible in English. During reading, we make...show more content...

The Importance of Reading and Writing
The Importance of Reading and Writing Reading and writing are both important; you can't have one without the other. They are skills that are
increased constantly due to little things that most times are not noticed. Whether it is from a book to a poem, there will always be a way that it
helps out your school performance. Reading and writing in general only helps absorb information, and enhance leisure or school related writing
tasks. It has also made life itself so much easier because reading and writing are so beneficial for school and for life. How much you read and write

So writing itself is a form of art, I'd say because it has to appeal to the reader, you won't be writing something to put it on shelves only or for your
literature teacher to read, it's for the people so they can get enlightened. Reading comes as the second commandment, you write first and then you
read, and the more you read what you write, the more you get better in writing. Reading helps in mental development and is known to stimulate the
muscles of the eyes and it is also an activity that involves greater levels of concentration and adds to the conversational skills of the reader. The habit
of reading also helps readers to convert new words and phrases that they come across in everyday conversations. It helps us to stay in–touch with
contemporary writers as well as those from the early times and makes us sensitive to global issues. Reading develops a person's creativity. Unlike
movies where everything is determined by the producer, writer and director, books allow students to create in their minds how a particular character
looks like or imagine how a scene plays out. In conclusion, writing and reading can't be created in vain, there was a fine good reason behind it and of
course it was to help the humanity acknowledge life

The Importance Of Reading And Writing Skills
Each person 's life is revolved around developing reading and writing skills, which can include writing information on job applications, understanding
laws, and reading road signs. These skills are critical to learn at a young age because they help students with academics, affect how quickly the
everyday person can read or write in the future, and impact the jobs citizens can get after graduating. Reading and writing have impacted me in a
numerous amount of ways, both positively and negatively. Looking back, the lack of reading and writing I did as a child has greatly obstructed my
comprehension of higher–level reading. Certain individuals appreciate reading and utilize that skill as a getaway from everyday life; unfortunately,
I had to read at a lower level than everyone else at an early age. I grew up to despise reading and writing. When I was first taught to read in grade
school, I was placed in special classes to try and improve my reading and writing skills. This quickly separated me from the majority of my class
which, consequently, made me dislike the English subject. My dislike for reading was triggered by the surplus amount of work I had to take on to
understand and complete my assignments. However, this was not the only instance where I did not feel up to par with the rest of my classmates.
Throughout my life, I have continuously noticed the effects of my refusal to improve my reading skills as a child. During 6th grade, my class had

I can't help but laugh when going through my old IEP paperwork from grade school. Most of the teachers concerns were my reading skills, and
handwriting. The school threw me into handwriting classes grades 1–5. I'd miss a 1/4th of my regular class just with that. Jokes on them my
handwriting is still terrible. From reading all of their paperwork and the dates on them, the reading concerns came from right after my mom passed

Reading Is Important For Students'success
Reading is fundamental to function in the society. It is important because it develops the mind. Reading develops language skills and comprehension
needed to meet the demands of everyday life. In the U.S., there are 45 million people functionally illiterate and reads below 5th grade level (Literacy
Project Foundation, n.d.). Books, magazines, comics, newspapers, and resources from the internet are reading outlets wherein they are required the
capacity to read and comprehend the content. Teachers are in a quest to find ways to motivate and inspire students to embrace the love of literacy. Free
VoluntaryReading (FVR) sometimes known as Sustained Silent Reading (SSR) works so that students who read independently may show significant
growth in their vocabulary development and reading comprehension (Cho & Krashen, 2001).
Review of the Literature
Reading is crucial to students' success. There are numerous researches and studies conducted in the search for an effective strategy for reading at all
levels. However, there are only a few teachers who practice independent reading in their classrooms. Teachers are tied with other components of reading
such as phonics, phonemic awareness, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension embedded in the books selected by the school district. Teachers were
instructed to follow the flow of lesson religiously. Present curriculum being used by school districts does not encourage students to read independently.

Why is – or isn't – reading & writing about literature important for people to become more thoughtful, more insightful about themselves, more
compassionate towards others and, in general, larger, better people?
Reading is a very important way of communicating; developing imagination, discovering new things, feelings and also reaching wanted education.
Reading literature especially, is very important for the foundation of life. In Literature we can see and imagine the whole world in a different
perspective. It can teach the reader about life, from sad love stories to happy and joyful ones that will touch the reader's heart. In each story the reader
can experience his or her own journey through which he or she can become more thoughtful and more insightful about themselves.
From a young age children are exposed to many different ways of literature. They are starting with simple books like picture books, and books with
easy simple context. That kind of books are served for teaching purposes and getting them ready for greater literature. As they grow older, they are
starting to explore other genres of books, the ones that send them to curiosity of the subject, and the whole book. The world of books prepares the
individuals from very early age to discover true importance of literature: being able to appreciate and understand situations from many perspectives.
Literature has power that every person can understand it differently and from a different perspective. As literature

Essay On Importance Of Literature
The importance of literature on today's society
In a rapidly developing world, the definition of literature goes beyond what the readers see and perceive. It provides a platform for us to open our
minds to ambiguities of meaning, while exploring what the world really has to offer through other cultures and beliefs. Most importantly, literature has
taught me to support my own point of view and trust my instincts and interpretations. The boundaries of literature are endless and holds no limit to
race, religion, culture, and sexuality. With an infinite amount of advantages, I believe literature is an integral component of our everyday lives as it
redefines text beyond the literal meaning, thus allowing us to connect with human emotions and surpassing self–defining barriers.
As an avid reader and enthusiastic writer, I have grown to learn that interpretation goes far beyond literal terms. The article "Why Study Literature",
emphasizes the importance of literature in our education system and everyday life. Michael Meyer's states that "[w]hile people will say what they
mean and mean what they say, [...] language in our world is [...] maddeningly and delightfully ambiguous" ("Why Literature" 1). Literature acts as a
medium of developing critical thinking skills, leading to independent learners and readers. If we limit a reader's interpretation of text, it restricts
creativity and the idea of being open to multiple analyses. An example of when this technique was applied was in my

Why Is Reading Important In The Second Grade
I did not think reading was important in the second grade because I thought the second grade was about going outside and having fun. Reading was
boring to me so I just did not have an interest in it. Unfortunately, I was stuck in a small, hot, and compact trailer during Fridays with my second–grade
teacher, Mrs. Norman because I was not the best reader. I had a difficult time pronouncing words but eventually with her methods it made me a
proficient reader. First, I struggled to pronounce words. I mispronounced words such as mother, father, brother, and important. Even though I
mispronounced those terms, important was the most challenging words that I could not pronounce. One day my classmates were reading and paying
attention to the passages. However, after I read my passage everyone stared at me because I mispronounced the word important. I pronounced it
accordingly: M–port–ANT. I knew something was inaccurate. My classroom was dead silent, I started to get nervous and anxiety started to rapidly

evening I opened up my textbook and went right to the word important. After two hours constantly pronouncing important I knew I was still saying

Reading–Is It Important?
Reading can be such a broad topic in America today. How important is it, why do we read, the questions are endless but to what extent is reading
really important? There are so many issues going on around the globe such as illegal immigration, abortion and the new health care reform. Reading is
no where near as important as those topics, those issues can change one's life forever and reading is just something we do without even noticing. It
comes natural to a human being in the 21st century. In Rick Moody's piece "The Joy and Enthusiasm of Reading" he is arguing that there is no right or

We were all created differently which means we all look at things with a different viewpoint. There should never be a limitation on reading, we
have the freedom as human beings to interpret something any way we want too. Books have that power to take you into your thoughts and really
examine what your thoughts are on the book and how you feel and when it's fiction it can take you into the story and get you to really use your
imagination, there can be no limitations when it comes to your own thoughts and your own imagination. Rick Moody said "I believe in the
absolute and unlimited liberty of reading, I believe in wandering through the stacks and picking out the first thing that strikes me" (pg.3) and later
in the essay he said "I believe there is not now and never will be an authority who can tell me how to interpret, how to read, how to find the pearl of
literary meaning in all cases" (pg. 4). The author clearly believes that reading should be left up to the imagination and the reader should have
complete control on how he or she looks at the book they are reading. After reading this piece, Moody definitely caught my attention with the idea
that there are people out there that believe there is a certain way to read something and you never really realize how seriously people take the topic of
reading and how many different opinions there are on the issue. Reading is something we do so naturally just like breathing or walking. Moody

Essay on The Importance of Reading
Reading has at all times and in all ages been a source of knowledge, of happiness, of pleasure and even moral courage. In today's world with so
much more to know and to learn and also the need for a conscious effort to conquer the divisive forces, the importance of reading has increased. In the
olden days if reading was not cultivated or encouraged, there was a substitute for it in the religious sermon and in the oral tradition. The practice of
telling stories at bed time compensated to some extent for the lack of reading. In the nineteenth century Victorian households used to get together for
an hour or so in the evenings and listen to books being read aloud. But today we not only read, we also want to read more and more and catch up...show

There is then the serious reading undertaken for research and for satisfying one's longing for knowledge. It may be a subject of scientific significance,
or a subject of historic or philosophic importance – varying according to the taste of the person. This kind of reading disciplines the mind and trains one
for critical and original thinking. There is yet another kind of reading –reading for pleasure. Though serious reading is also a source of pleasure,
reading which is devoted mainly to it differs in one respect. It grows upon one, it gives before demanding and it soothes and relieves tension and
loneliness. The only kind of reading which neither stimulates thought nor provides knowledge is one which is approached negatively, with the simple
motive of escape and of "killing" time.
A person who is widely read is able to mix with others: he is a better conversationalist than those who do not read. He can stand his ground. Reading
broadens the vision. it is in a way a substitute for travel. It is not possible to travel as much as one would like to and reading can fill in the gap created
by the lack of travel. "Reading", as Bacon wrote in his essay. 'Of Studies'. "maketh a full man: conference a ready man: and writing an exact man".
Thus a widely–read man is a better conversationalist and is able to see the other point of view.

Why Is Reading Important To Me

  • 1. Why Is Reading Important To Me As you grow up everyone tries to fit within certain standards or stereotypes. Those standards often change as we age of course, but nevertheless, we try and manipulate ourselves in a very specific way that makes us form to what society believes and does not believe. This has a lot to do with why I always disliked reading as a child and why my disliking only continued with age. However, it was not always this way, I used to enjoy reading as a young child and it wasn't until I reached my elementary ages that my disliking came about. In my younger years, I loved reading. My mother would read me stories every day and I loved the way it would spark my imagination in every way possible. I could so vividly picture what was happening throughout a story my mind would jump straight in as if I was the main character throughout the whole adventure. As I aged, my mother would stress the importance of reading and every night I would insist she read me stories before bed....show more content... I preferred listening to storied by others rather than do it on my own. At time of course I would do some reading on my own but I always found it extremely challenging. It wasn't until about the second grade; whenever I was first exposed to brick and mortar schooling that my ability to read became the most challenging. This is about the time I started to notice that all the other kids were excelling with their reading abilities at a much faster rate than I was. I wasn't fitting in with the normal standards for my age. I felt stupid. I was bumped down into reading lower level books than the majority of the class and this whole time I never understood why. The only thing I understood was that people looked at me differently. People judged me base on my ability to do what seemed like a very simple task to so many. But little did they know, I was Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 2. Why Is Independent Reading Important Reading is considered to be the key to success to many teachers, and may even believe reading can bring grades up and eventually help in starting a career. What I believe is that reading not only encourages me to learn more, but learn more about any life skill from working skills to communicating skills. I believe that by doing independent reading I will be able to see life more clearly and through fully as I challenge myself with AP courses and experience what those previous top ten students have dealt with. I do read on my own especially ebooks and audibles. This independent reading will help in erupting my motivation, dedication, and enjoy the books given as homework by an English teacher. Motivation is the first factor in succeeding in...show more content... There is a quote by Walt Disney that I think of wherever I get tired of reading and rather watch a movie and that is "We keep moving forward, opening up new doors, and doing new things, because we're curious and curiosity keeps leading us down new paths." This quote reminds me that I wouldn't be where I am if I hadn't read those books at home such as the Harry Potter series and Nancy Drew books when I was small. The curiosity of wanting to know what happens and enjoying them made me fall in love with reading. Dedication in an AP isn't only about working hard but wanting to know what interesting new skills I will gain at the end of the course. This is want keeps me going and what allows me to sit through a whole day of just grabbing a book and eating snacks. These are the times I most enjoy when at home because it not only makes me a better writer in English but increases my stamina to do all of my homework just so that I can sit in peace and read. I can fully understand the article given for this essay because I went through this experience of having to learn to enjoy reading. By putting hours of reading every week I was able to develop the skill of wanting more. Wanting the need to read more interesting stories that involve other author's Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 3. Reading Is Indispensable In Reading Reading is a basic life skill. Undeniably, it is a vital receptive, interactive, and survival mechanism to get through life. It goes along in one's the day to day routine, from doing the simplest household chores to the more complex following instructions in the world of work. One must read to understand what he does; likewise, he needs to understand what he reads to comprehend reality. Inarguably, reading is one of the most important contrivances in life. Reading has always been an impetus for successful learning. It is an indispensable tool in order to cope with other subjects such as Science, Social Studies, Mathematics and others. Hence, poor reading ability means poor academic performance. When one can read, greater is his chance to muddle through everyday learning. Fundamentally, the enhancement of this skill must not be neglected most especially so by the...show more content... As mentioned in BГ¶lГјkbaЕџ (2013), Akyol claimed that reading and understanding are combined. It is a receptive skill and therefore very essential in the cognitive as well as the psycho–social and emotional development of every individual. Reading is not just decoding words from print: the deep–seated point is comprehension. In other words, reading does not mean anything unless there is comprehension. For this reasons, the national government has been trying to capitalize on the reading comprehension enhancement of every learner. In 2006, as initiated by UNESCO, the National EFA Committee (NEC) conceptualized a program identified as Philippine Education for All (EFA) 2015 National Action Plan. The primary goal of EFA 2015 Plan is to provide fundamental competencies to everyone and to attain functional literacy for all. Moreover, EFA Plan 2015 assures that every Filipino is functionally knowledgeable and literate who is equipped with the basic learning needs and Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 4. Why Should I Read? Essay Why Should I Read? "Reading a book is like re–writing it for yourself.... You bring to a novel, anything you read, all your experience of the world. You bring your history and you read it in your own terms." Angela Carter (1940–1992), British author. Why read? Why should I read the book before it comes out in cinema? Why is settling down with a good book better then sitting on the couch watching The Simpson's reruns? I have often pondered the merits of reading, but you don't realise the advantages until you actually begin reading. Until I unlocked my first real book I couldn't have dreamed of the wonders and marvels that it opens to you. It's just that when you do read you discover how exquisite the delights of reading are....show more content... With a book to aid the imagination, a person can go anywhere. They can be marooned on a desert island where normal boys change to savage beasts in Lord of the Flies, they can become Hannibal lector's next victim or even have a romance with the arrogant Mr. Darcy in Pride and Prejudice. Books hold vast amounts of knowledge. In every book, there is something to learn. Biographies and Diaries can give us accounts of the Second World War, the sinking of the Titanic, the truth behind celebrities while history books teach us not to make the same mistakes twice. Children should be encouraged to read from a young age, it helps them with spelling and grammar. It cultivates their young minds and helps them to believe anything is possible. In 1966 Margaret Craig McNamara founded Reading Is Fundamental after discovering that the children she volunteered to tutor in Washington, D.C., owned no or few books. It develops and delivers children's and family literacy programs that help prepare young children for reading and motivate school–age children to read regularly. Last year, RIF celebrated its 35th anniversary and the milestone of placing more than 200 million books in the hands and homes of children most at risk of educational failure. Books are a free pastime and can help to escape from reality.

  • 6. Why Is Reading Important To Me Throughout my life, I have remembered times where someone has read to me or I have read a book that has impacted me. From the time when I was three and my mother would read to me, to today. When I was in kindergarten, I didn't like to read. I believed that reading was unexciting and that it was a waste of time. Most of the time, I would watch television when I came home from school. Since I didn't like to read and would never practice reading, I had to acquire help from one of the teachers who would take me out of the regular reading class and she would teach me how to read at my pace. Even though I believed that reading was unexciting, I love to read now. When I was in first grade, I remember my sister, Lauren, reading me the Harry Potter series for the first time. She had always adored the Harry Potter series, that she thought she would share her love for the books with me. I thought it was so amazing that she started reading the books to me because I idolized her. When Lauren read, she would always do different voices for each character, and I thought it was amazing all the characters she could intimidate. I always looked forward to the next time she would read to me....show more content... She would always read this series of books called Geronimo Stilton. The series was about a mouse detective who would go on wild adventures with his friends. I loved the books so much that whenever my family would go to Barnes and Noble, I would have to buy another Geronimo Stilton book. Of course, I would always buy the book my teacher was reading so I could follow along. On the weekends, I would always read ahead so I could tell my classmates what happened next before our teacher would read to us again. To this day, I still have my favorite Geronimo Stilton Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 7. Why Is Reading So Important? Why is Reading So Important? Like most of you, I'm a voracious reader and have taught myself many things throughout my life, whether I thought of these pursuits as study or not. I began gobbling up books up before I was in Kindergarten and have continued to devour them until now, regardless of where life took me along the way. This was my mom's influence, of course. She was a big believer in the value of being a bookworm and instilled the habit in us at an early age – we never had much money growing up, but there were always books to fill the time and get our imaginations churning. Some of my fondest memories include sitting in the living room with an afghan blanket pulled to my chin, my breath visible in the frigid air. Reading about how cruise ships were built or the lives of whales or Native American history. All things I never saw but got to know intimately. ...show more content... But we had the world at our fingertips, and in those moments you didn't feel the lack. A reader always knows how to entertain themselves and learn something new. Reading may not always be the most productive way to learn, but there's no shorter path to the many facets of the human experience than through reading books on a variety of subjects and experiences. In fact, I think comparing book reading to other learning strategies in the short–term paints an incomplete picture. Because the true power of reading is how the knowledge links together and snowballs over time. The reading habit definitely seemed to make me wiser than other people my age, and this is without a determined plan for study – I just swallowed books wholesale and moved on to the next as interest called. I Also Believe Books Make You A More Moral

  • 9. Why Is It Important To Read? Reading any books, always left me sleeping. I cannot finish reading non–fiction texts unless I find it so interesting. I understand the text more when I read slowly than reading it fast because I tend to be more focused when I read it slow than fast and I am able to take note as well while reading it. I am a passive reader because I usually read simply to get through the text or article and I pay a little attention in identifying the topic sentences and main ideas as I don't find it interesting to read. • 10. Importance Of Reading The Importance of Reading Growing up throughout the years it goes from teachers reading books to your class to books getting assigned to you to read independantly. Most of the books assigned would be so boring and pointless to read. Normally when I got assigned a book I would just read through it trying to comprehend some parts of it. I never tried to enjoy it or show an interest in the book. Reading to me was not something I ever enjoyed doing. I did not like reading for pleasure and for class assignments because I did not think there was a point. When I was reading independent books for pleasure, or an assignment I would think to myself, "Why, why, why... do we need to do this." Reading to me seemed like a waste of time, until my senior ...show more content... Mrs. Daniels explained to me I would be making a mistake, because the teacher for this course is one of the best teachers at school. Later on Mr. Garland would win best teacher of the year for the yearbook. So I decided to try the class out because it was a college class. I figured that's what I needed going into college in the months to come. The first book we read was called "The Bluest Eyes" by Toni Morrison. As most people know this book is a classic, but at times can be confusing. We had to finish the whole book in two weeks. I thought that task would be nearly impossible, but Mr. Garland made it seem possible by letting us have time in class to read it. We also discussed in groups what was going on in the book to make it a tad bit more understandable.Reading for the first time was fun instead of a chore. As the semester went on, I never had to force myself to read any of the books that were assigned to us, but the last few months sometimes were hard to find any motivation as a senior. • 11. What Is Reading: Why Reading Is Important? What is reading? Reading" is the process which involves looking at a series of written symbols and getting meaning from them. When we read, we use our eyes to receive written symbols (letters, punctuation marks and spaces) and we use our brain to convert them into words, sentences and paragraphs that communicate something to us. Reading can be silent (in our head) or aloud (so that other people can hear). Reading is a receptive skill by which we receive information but the process of reading also needs speaking skills, so that we can pronounce the words correctly that we read. Reading is something that we can do by our own that broadens our vocabulary therefore helping in improving other three skills of speaking writing and listening. So reading is highly valuable skill and activity, so it is advised that English learners should try to read as much as possible in English. During reading, we make...show more content... We get most concise understanding of what we read after reading. Why reading is important? Reading isn't just about going from the beginning to the end of a written passage. Rather we read to get the knowledge, to gain new vocabulary, to improve our understanding and also to spend leisure time. T Elements of reading Comprehension Reading comprehension has two elements that complete the process. Vocabulary knowledge The reader must be able to understand the vocabulary used by the writer Text comprehension, where the reader puts together the vocabulary and different comprehension strategies to develop an understanding of the text. • 12. The Importance of Reading and Writing The Importance of Reading and Writing Reading and writing are both important; you can't have one without the other. They are skills that are increased constantly due to little things that most times are not noticed. Whether it is from a book to a poem, there will always be a way that it helps out your school performance. Reading and writing in general only helps absorb information, and enhance leisure or school related writing tasks. It has also made life itself so much easier because reading and writing are so beneficial for school and for life. How much you read and write today, will somehow affect your future job, family, position, or even your salary. Despite the fact that most people feel that reading is a leisure ...show more content... So writing itself is a form of art, I'd say because it has to appeal to the reader, you won't be writing something to put it on shelves only or for your literature teacher to read, it's for the people so they can get enlightened. Reading comes as the second commandment, you write first and then you read, and the more you read what you write, the more you get better in writing. Reading helps in mental development and is known to stimulate the muscles of the eyes and it is also an activity that involves greater levels of concentration and adds to the conversational skills of the reader. The habit of reading also helps readers to convert new words and phrases that they come across in everyday conversations. It helps us to stay in–touch with contemporary writers as well as those from the early times and makes us sensitive to global issues. Reading develops a person's creativity. Unlike movies where everything is determined by the producer, writer and director, books allow students to create in their minds how a particular character looks like or imagine how a scene plays out. • 13. The Importance Of Reading And Writing Skills Each person 's life is revolved around developing reading and writing skills, which can include writing information on job applications, understanding laws, and reading road signs. These skills are critical to learn at a young age because they help students with academics, affect how quickly the everyday person can read or write in the future, and impact the jobs citizens can get after graduating. Reading and writing have impacted me in a numerous amount of ways, both positively and negatively. Looking back, the lack of reading and writing I did as a child has greatly obstructed my comprehension of higher–level reading. Certain individuals appreciate reading and utilize that skill as a getaway from everyday life; unfortunately, I had to read at a lower level than everyone else at an early age. I grew up to despise reading and writing. When I was first taught to read in grade school, I was placed in special classes to try and improve my reading and writing skills. This quickly separated me from the majority of my class which, consequently, made me dislike the English subject. My dislike for reading was triggered by the surplus amount of work I had to take on to understand and complete my assignments. However, this was not the only instance where I did not feel up to par with the rest of my classmates. Throughout my life, I have continuously noticed the effects of my refusal to improve my reading skills as a child. During 6th grade, my class had A.R. reading, which required Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 14. Why Reading Is Important I can't help but laugh when going through my old IEP paperwork from grade school. Most of the teachers concerns were my reading skills, and handwriting. The school threw me into handwriting classes grades 1–5. I'd miss a 1/4th of my regular class just with that. Jokes on them my handwriting is still terrible. From reading all of their paperwork and the dates on them, the reading concerns came from right after my mom passed away. I was more than capable of doing well in that area. In fact, I really loved reading and still do. I just didn't want to be there. I didn't like my peers, and I didn't like them asking about my mom all the time. You know how kids are, they are vicious and sometimes said mean things kids say. The teachers didn't help...show more content... I NEEDED to be in class. I missed so much and had no way to catch up on it. I missed recesses, and had to catch up on class work at lunch time and at home. I would have double the homework any other student had. Then they threw me into a reading class which took out more time in my regular class. Some days it would be reading class, handwriting class, consuler, and then IEP tests. Some days I didn't see my classroom at all. I was drowning. I thinks it's all funny because none of these teachers asked me what I wanted or what I thought would help me. They never asked why I went from writing at a normal size to writing really really small. It wasn't because my fine motor skills. I specifically remember I went through a phase of writing really small because my older brother did, and at the time he was my idol. I remember being so exhausted from taking tests I would just sit there crying circling random answers because I did not care. I wanted to be back in class with my teacher and my classmates. It was absolutely traumatizing. When I think about grade school, I do not think about anything fun. They drained all of the fun and joy out of learning for me. I did not start enjoying school again until eighth Get more content on HelpWriting.net

Review of the Literature Reading is crucial to students' success. There are numerous researches and studies conducted in the search for an effective strategy for reading at all levels. However, there are only a few teachers who practice independent reading in their classrooms. Teachers are tied with other components of reading such as phonics, phonemic awareness, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension embedded in the books selected by the school district. Teachers were instructed to follow the flow of lesson religiously. Present curriculum being used by school districts does not encourage students to read independently. • 19. Essay On Importance Of Literature The importance of literature on today's society In a rapidly developing world, the definition of literature goes beyond what the readers see and perceive. It provides a platform for us to open our minds to ambiguities of meaning, while exploring what the world really has to offer through other cultures and beliefs. Most importantly, literature has taught me to support my own point of view and trust my instincts and interpretations. The boundaries of literature are endless and holds no limit to race, religion, culture, and sexuality. With an infinite amount of advantages, I believe literature is an integral component of our everyday lives as it redefines text beyond the literal meaning, thus allowing us to connect with human emotions and surpassing self–defining barriers. As an avid reader and enthusiastic writer, I have grown to learn that interpretation goes far beyond literal terms. The article "Why Study Literature", emphasizes the importance of literature in our education system and everyday life. Michael Meyer's states that "[w]hile people will say what they mean and mean what they say, [...] language in our world is [...] maddeningly and delightfully ambiguous" ("Why Literature" 1). Literature acts as a medium of developing critical thinking skills, leading to independent learners and readers. If we limit a reader's interpretation of text, it restricts creativity and the idea of being open to multiple analyses. An example of when this technique was applied was in my Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 20. Why Is Reading Important In The Second Grade I did not think reading was important in the second grade because I thought the second grade was about going outside and having fun. Reading was boring to me so I just did not have an interest in it. Unfortunately, I was stuck in a small, hot, and compact trailer during Fridays with my second–grade teacher, Mrs. Norman because I was not the best reader. I had a difficult time pronouncing words but eventually with her methods it made me a proficient reader. First, I struggled to pronounce words. I mispronounced words such as mother, father, brother, and important. Even though I mispronounced those terms, important was the most challenging words that I could not pronounce. One day my classmates were reading and paying attention to the passages. However, after I read my passage everyone stared at me because I mispronounced the word important. I pronounced it accordingly: M–port–ANT. I knew something was inaccurate. My classroom was dead silent, I started to get nervous and anxiety started to rapidly increase. As I looked up to see why it got quiet all of sudden, I see my classmate's expressions on their faces, they looked confused which made me even more nervous. I...show more content... Norman asked me to stay after class if I needed assistance. I responded in a rude tone, "No thanks" and stormed out of her classroom and started making my way to my bus. The reason why I was so hostile towards my teacher was because I felt that she was making fun of my reading. That evening I opened up my textbook and went right to the word important. After two hours constantly pronouncing important I knew I was still saying it incorrectly. So I decided to go to bed and that's when I came to my decision to reconsider Mrs. Norman's offer. The next day after class, I walked towards Mrs. Norman's desk and apologized for my attitude and explain why I acted in such a rude way. She accepted and my apology and asked her, "Is the offer still on the Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 21. Essay on Reading-Is It Important? Soriano, Rachel English 091 July 19 2011 Reading–Is It Important? Reading can be such a broad topic in America today. How important is it, why do we read, the questions are endless but to what extent is reading really important? There are so many issues going on around the globe such as illegal immigration, abortion and the new health care reform. Reading is no where near as important as those topics, those issues can change one's life forever and reading is just something we do without even noticing. It comes natural to a human being in the 21st century. In Rick Moody's piece "The Joy and Enthusiasm of Reading" he is arguing that there is no right or wrong way to read. I agree with Moody's opinion that there is no right or wrong...show more content... We were all created differently which means we all look at things with a different viewpoint. There should never be a limitation on reading, we have the freedom as human beings to interpret something any way we want too. Books have that power to take you into your thoughts and really examine what your thoughts are on the book and how you feel and when it's fiction it can take you into the story and get you to really use your imagination, there can be no limitations when it comes to your own thoughts and your own imagination. Rick Moody said "I believe in the absolute and unlimited liberty of reading, I believe in wandering through the stacks and picking out the first thing that strikes me" (pg.3) and later in the essay he said "I believe there is not now and never will be an authority who can tell me how to interpret, how to read, how to find the pearl of literary meaning in all cases" (pg. 4). The author clearly believes that reading should be left up to the imagination and the reader should have complete control on how he or she looks at the book they are reading. After reading this piece, Moody definitely caught my attention with the idea that there are people out there that believe there is a certain way to read something and you never really realize how seriously people take the topic of reading and how many different opinions there are on the issue. Reading is something we do so naturally just like breathing or walking. Moody reminded us throughout his Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 22. Essay on The Importance of Reading Reading has at all times and in all ages been a source of knowledge, of happiness, of pleasure and even moral courage. In today's world with so much more to know and to learn and also the need for a conscious effort to conquer the divisive forces, the importance of reading has increased. In the olden days if reading was not cultivated or encouraged, there was a substitute for it in the religious sermon and in the oral tradition. The practice of telling stories at bed time compensated to some extent for the lack of reading. In the nineteenth century Victorian households used to get together for an hour or so in the evenings and listen to books being read aloud. But today we not only read, we also want to read more and more and catch up...show more content... There is then the serious reading undertaken for research and for satisfying one's longing for knowledge. It may be a subject of scientific significance, or a subject of historic or philosophic importance – varying according to the taste of the person. This kind of reading disciplines the mind and trains one for critical and original thinking. There is yet another kind of reading –reading for pleasure. Though serious reading is also a source of pleasure, reading which is devoted mainly to it differs in one respect. It grows upon one, it gives before demanding and it soothes and relieves tension and loneliness. The only kind of reading which neither stimulates thought nor provides knowledge is one which is approached negatively, with the simple motive of escape and of "killing" time. A person who is widely read is able to mix with others: he is a better conversationalist than those who do not read. He can stand his ground. Reading broadens the vision. it is in a way a substitute for travel. It is not possible to travel as much as one would like to and reading can fill in the gap created by the lack of travel.
