It consists of two main things as it’s name implies
Shell & Tubes.
The shell is a large vessel with a number of tubes
inside it.
It classified and constructed in accordance with
widely used TEMA, 1999( 9th edition, 2009) and
other standards and ASME boiler and pressure
vessel codes.

The principle of operation is simple enough: Two
fluids of different temperatures are brought into close
contact but they are not mixing with each other.
This system designed by 3 letter combination-
• First letter – front end head type(stationary)
• Second letter- shell type
• Third letter- rear end head type

Some common shell and tube type heat exchangers
are: AES, BEM, AEP, CFU, AKT and AJW
Class R: for generally severe requirements of
petroleum and related processing application.
Class C: for commercial and general process
application.
Class B: for chemical process services.

7. Components of STHE and Type of Front
End
The principal components of
an STHE are:
Shell, shell cover
Tubes, tubesheet
Baffles and nozzles
Other components include
tie-rods and spacers, pass
partition plates,
impingement plate,
longitudinal baffle, sealing
strips, supports, and
foundation.

Types of Baffle Plates : Segmental Cut
Baffles
The single and double segmental baffles are most
frequently used.
Optimal baffle spacing is somewhere between 40% -
60% of the shell diameter.
Baffle cut of 25%-35% is usually recommended.

12. 12 Types of Baffle Plates
Disc and ring baffles are composed of
alternating outer rings and inner discs,
which direct the flow radially across the
tube field.
This baffle type is very effective in
pressure drop to heat transfer conversion.
In an orifice baffle shell-side-
fluid flows through the clearance
between tube outside diameter
and baffle-hole diameter.

18. Why a Shell and Tube Heat Exchanger?
Shell and tube heat exchangers are the most widespread
and commonly used basic heat exchanger configuration
in the process industries.
The reasons for this general acceptance are several.
The shell and tube heat exchanger provides a
comparatively large ratio of heat transfer area to volume
and weight.
It provides this surface in a form which is relatively easy
to construct in a wide range of sizes.
