1. Internship Program and Position Process: Semester 1
At the end of my junior year of high school, I was eligible to apply for the Work-Based
Learning Internship class because I took myriad of classes geared towards my future career in
the medical field. I had to fill out a few papers regarding my interests and academic
performance and turn it in to the guidance office in order to be considered for the class. Soon
enough, I had a formal interview with Scott Schramm, one of the directors of the program. We
reviewed my resume and discussed how I would contribute to the class. Questions such as,
what are my greatest weaknesses and strengths were asked. A few weeks later, I received a
note saying that I was accepted into the Work-Based Learning program.
During the summer, Mr. Schramm contacted the medical interns for a meeting. Since all
of us took at least once class each year directed towards the medical field, one of our semester-
length internship sites would be at the Kosciusko Community Hospital. The meeting was located
at the hospital where we would meet our new employer, Becky White. She explained to us how
to properly introduce ourselves to employees by using AIDET (acknowledge, introduce,
duration, explanation, and thank). In addition, we had to be CPR certified in order to intern at
the hospital. Becky had to train us on how to perform CPR and the Heimlich maneuver on
infants, children, and adults. Afterwards, we took a test over the materials we learned that day
in order to determine if we were equipped to work at the hospital.
Kosciusko Community Hospital provides services such as cancer care, diagnostic
imaging, outpatient services, surgical services, and much more. I spent about six hours a week
at my internship site. During my time at the hospital, I observed the nurses and doctors, asking
questions when it was convenient. I also handed doctors tools and helped nurses with their

hourly rounds. I wheeled patients out to the lobby, changed bedding, and gave baths. I also
answered questions about the human anatomy when the doctors quizzed me during my time in
the operating room. It was helpful having taken the Human Body Systems class at the high
school because I recognized many of the muscles, bones, and organs the surgeons were
working with.

Semester 2
During the second semester of Work-Based Learning Internship, I had the opportunity to
experience three different career fields: physical therapy, orthopaedic care, and dental care. I
did not need an interview to intern at either of these places; however, I did need to complete
paper work at each of the work sites. The papers included HIPAA release forms, liability papers,
and dress code documents.
Indiana Physical Therapy specializes in rehabilitation due to an injury, surgery, stroke,
disease, or other conditions. They also contact health insurance companies and surgeons to
keep them up-to-date with their patients’ progress. I spent around six hours a week for six
weeks at IPT and helped with grabbing and returning weights. I was able to understand some of
the terms the therapists used because of classes, such as Human Body Systems, where we
studied bones, joints, and muscles.

At the same time, I went to Joe’s Kids every Thursday for six weeks. Joe’s Kids is a
nonprofit organization that provides physical, occupational, and speech therapy services to
children. I spent ninety minutes there and was responsible for making copies and filing any
paperwork that needed to be put away. I also helped saddle handicapped children into a swing
and played games with patients in order to assist themwith their fine and gross motor skills. I
had an idea of a few of the diseases and disabilities the children had because I learned about
diseases caused by an abnormality in the nervous systemin my Microbiology and Human Body
System classes.

During the next six weeks, I spent five days a week at Jansen Orthopaedic Clinic. This
clinic provides treatment for a variety of bone and joint conditions, including minimally invasive
joint replacement surgical procedures, sports medicine, and traumatic surgery. I interned under
surgeon, Dean Jansen every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, as he was in surgery on Tuesdays
and Thursdays. I spent ninety minutes each day performing various tasks like filing x-rays,

For my final six weeks, I spent six hours a week at Orange Door Dental Group. They
provide dental care along with helping patients understand treatment needs and expectations.
They guide their patients through the diagnostic appointment, treatment phases, and insurance
claimprocess. For the most part I observed the dentists, hygienists, and assistants, helping
them whenever they needed a drawer opened or a tool handed to them. I asked many
questions regarding the tools, the techniques, and the schooling required to become a dentist.
It was very useful having a Human Body Systems class because I understood the dentists when
they mentioned nerves and muscles in the mouth.

the tasks and skills I will need to become successful in this career. All of the work that I did

5. Self-Assessment: Semester 1
During my internship at Kosciusko Community Hospital, I expected to shadow the nurses
and observe their daily tasks; however, I learned much more than that. I was able to do a
couple of hands on activities that most high school students would not be able to do. I was
allowed to step into the surgical room and watch each slice of the scalpel, I saw the birth of a
newborn baby, and I observed the steps of inserting a PICC line. My experience exceeded my
expectations by far. Each one of my supervisors explained what they were doing and why. For
example, I learned in the outpatient clinic that a piece of silver is put into a wound because it
serves as a natural healer. I believe I did a great job of asking my mentors what certain tools
were and why a certain procedure was undertaken. In addition, I frequently asked the nurses if
they needed help with their hourly rounds. Through this internship I learned the importance of
communication and team work. Each division in the hospital is connected to one another in
some way; therefore, one department cannot function without the other. Communication is
key at the hospital because people working in other departments have the information you
need to take care of your patient.
OpheliaLuu,May 20, 2016
Semester 2
Before my last semester of internships, my expectations were fairly high for the
upcoming semester, since the hospital was such an amazing experience. I imagined that I would
get to know the patients better and I would have more hands-on responsibilities, as I would be
spending more time at one internship site. Fortunately, all four places met my expectations. I
was surprised that I was trusted enough to handle patient data, like x-rays. Because of this, I
improved my skill of accountability. For instance, since Dr. Jansen was out of the office two days
a week, I was kept accountable for organizing paperwork and he relied on me to have it finished
when he returned. I also saw many new procedures in the physical therapy department. I
learned many techniques that improve fine and gross motor skills, treat pain, and heal
soreness. I believe I did well when I was handed tasks, thanks to my mentors who fully
explained what I should do. I often received compliments on my work, but never hesitated to
ask questions when I needed guidance or was curious about a certain diagnosis or disease.

Central Carolina Surgery, P.A.
1002 N. Church St. Suite 302

Dear Dr. Newman
I recently saw that you had a need for a surgical physician’s assistant and I would love to fill that
position. I saw your ad in the newspaper and thought I would be a great candidate for the job. I
am currently finishing my senior year at Warsaw Community High School and am going to
major in biology and minor in psychology at Indiana University. I will complete my physician’s
assistant program in May of 2022 and will be available for employment right after.
I have read that you are one of the most recommended general surgeons in the state of North
Carolina and I would love the chance to work alongside of you. The procedures you have done,
such as, endoscopies and laparoscopic surgeries, have interested me since the beginning of my
senior year. I have seen both of these procedures done during my internship at Kosciusko
Community Hospital; therefore, I have a basic understanding of the steps that must be taken in
order to have a successful surgery. I believe I am a perfect fit for this position because I am a
sharp, detailed, and hard worker. I can make decisions quickly in times of stress, which is crucial
when a patient is on the table. Additionally, I have been a creative and an artistic individual my
whole life; thus, I can promise you that my work is very precise. Lastly, I try my best at the tasks
given to me. I am positive that I would fit in well at Central Carolina Surgery and would love the
opportunity to work for you.
I look forward to meeting with you to discuss my qualifications. Enclosed is my resume for you
to review. I will call you next week to hopefully discuss when an interview would be
appropriate. Thank you for taking your own time and reading this.
Sincerely,
Ophelia Luu

Page 10 of20 OpheliaLuu,May 20, 2016 5. Self-Assessment: Semester 1 During my internship at Kosciusko Community Hospital, I expected to shadow the nurses and observe their daily tasks; however, I learned much more than that. I was able to do a couple of hands on activities that most high school students would not be able to do. I was allowed to step into the surgical room and watch each slice of the scalpel, I saw the birth of a newborn baby, and I observed the steps of inserting a PICC line. My experience exceeded my expectations by far. Each one of my supervisors explained what they were doing and why. For example, I learned in the outpatient clinic that a piece of silver is put into a wound because it serves as a natural healer. I believe I did a great job of asking my mentors what certain tools were and why a certain procedure was undertaken. In addition, I frequently asked the nurses if they needed help with their hourly rounds. Through this internship I learned the importance of communication and team work. Each division in the hospital is connected to one another in some way; therefore, one department cannot function without the other. Communication is key at the hospital because people working in other departments have the information you need to take care of your patient.

Page 11 of20 OpheliaLuu,May 20, 2016 Semester 2 Before my last semester of internships, my expectations were fairly high for the upcoming semester, since the hospital was such an amazing experience. I imagined that I would get to know the patients better and I would have more hands-on responsibilities, as I would be spending more time at one internship site. Fortunately, all four places met my expectations. I was surprised that I was trusted enough to handle patient data, like x-rays. Because of this, I improved my skill of accountability. For instance, since Dr. Jansen was out of the office two days a week, I was kept accountable for organizing paperwork and he relied on me to have it finished when he returned. I also saw many new procedures in the physical therapy department. I learned many techniques that improve fine and gross motor skills, treat pain, and heal soreness. I believe I did well when I was handed tasks, thanks to my mentors who fully explained what I should do. I often received compliments on my work, but never hesitated to ask questions when I needed guidance or was curious about a certain diagnosis or disease.

Newman Doctor of Medicine Central Carolina Surgery, P.A. 1002 N. Church St. Suite 302 Greensboro, NC 27401 Dear Dr. Newman I recently saw that you had a need for a surgical physician’s assistant and I would love to fill that position. I saw your ad in the newspaper and thought I would be a great candidate for the job. I am currently finishing my senior year at Warsaw Community High School and am going to major in biology and minor in psychology at Indiana University. I will complete my physician’s assistant program in May of 2022 and will be available for employment right after. I have read that you are one of the most recommended general surgeons in the state of North Carolina and I would love the chance to work alongside of you. The procedures you have done, such as, endoscopies and laparoscopic surgeries, have interested me since the beginning of my senior year. I have seen both of these procedures done during my internship at Kosciusko Community Hospital; therefore, I have a basic understanding of the steps that must be taken in order to have a successful surgery. I believe I am a perfect fit for this position because I am a sharp, detailed, and hard worker. I can make decisions quickly in times of stress, which is crucial when a patient is on the table. Additionally, I have been a creative and an artistic individual my whole life; thus, I can promise you that my work is very precise. Lastly, I try my best at the tasks given to me. I am positive that I would fit in well at Central Carolina Surgery and would love the opportunity to work for you. I look forward to meeting with you to discuss my qualifications. Enclosed is my resume for you to review. I will call you next week to hopefully discuss when an interview would be appropriate. Thank you for taking your own time and reading this. Sincerely, Ophelia Luu
