Emily CookProfessional Portfolio
Welcome to my Professional Portfolio!Throughout this presentation, I hope to provide a picture of my journey through Health Academy providing personal insight, artifacts of my work, and the benefits I gained along the way.
OrientationWeekThroughout orientation week many people came and gave brief descriptions of the different aspects of the hospital we would encounter as well as tours of each facility. Presentations and activities include:Lorie Labarca: tour of St. Joe Campus Kim Frangenberg: tour of St. Francis CampusLinda McGuire-Rook: Medical Terminology Introduction at Newman UniversityRuth Hommertzheim: Surgery OrientationTB shotsOnline Hospital OrientationFamiliarization with HIPAA Laws
Beginning ProjectsIn the classroom we spent several weeks researching possible medical careers.Projects ranged from simple career options to in depth analysis of career salaries. Attached are examples.Project 1 - Career OptionsProject 2 - Career SalariesProject 3 - Career Voyages
Research PaperFrom these projects, we chose a career to research more thoroughly. I did my research on a Child Life Specialist. In the process I interviewed an experienced CLS as well as a recent graduate in this field of study. CLS Research PaperAngie Long InterviewMelanie Davison Interview
Rotation BlogsAttached are my reflections from these experiences:CICU BlogER BlogPediatric BlogNICU BlogIn Health Academy we spent 16 weeks on different rotations throughout the hospital. My favorite rotations included the Pediatric and NICU floors. I also enjoyed CICU, where I witnessed a code blue and ER where I was bedside during 3 different traumas.

Among these were:Jenna Huffman - Health Services ManagementMichelle Landoll – EMSLinda Landoll - Child AbuseRadiology and Cadaver LabRespiratory TherapyRN and Nursing AnethistOT and PT
ResumeFocusing on obtaining an entry-level medical position, we put together a cover letter, resume, and reference page. Cover LetterResumeReference Page
Hand Washing and Hygiene PresentationsWe taught several kindergarten, 1st and 2ndgrade classrooms the proper steps in washing their hands as well as good hygiene tips. We interacted through questions, a simple song, and a volunteer activity. Students were given soap bars and toothbrushes. During the semester I was a member of “Team Clean”.Using a large cardboard hand, we performed a skit to show the spread of germs and how to control it.
Medical DirectionMy future plan is to become a Child Life Specialist. This career takes passion and dedication to caring for the development and well being of children and their families affected by life-changing medical issues.I plan to attend Wichita State and major in Nursing with emphasis in Child and Family Development.
Personal InciteHealth Academy has been a great opportunity for me to learn more about the career path in health care I would like to take. It has been a good way to experience day to day challenges of the medical world first hand rather than in a classroom. I feel extremely prepared for college and I am confident in the major I have chosen because of the shadowing and research I have completed.
