3. Orientation During our first week of health academy, we had many different speakers come to our class. Officer Dick came to our class and told us some important rules for the hospital. I learned I should always wear my idea while I’m in the hospital. A nurse also came to instruct on how to get to the OR and what to expect while we were there. We were also given a tour of St. Joseph Hospital during orientation week. We had to get tested for TB during orientation to make sure we weren’t carrying this disease in the hospital.

12. Weekly Blogs After each rotation, we wrote blogs that described our experience in the different units. This provided us with an easy way to communicate with each other For my sixth week in rotation, I was in the heart cath lab for one day. I spent my one rotation with a nurse by the name of Andrea. Andrea taught me about the different reasons for catheters and how they were inserted. She also talked about inserting stints and balloons in the arteries of the patients. I found that it was interesting that a tiny stint is worth $2000. It was such a small piece of metal. I didn't get to see any procedures, though, and that was disappointing. Overall, my stay in cath lab was really fun.

13. Weekly Blogs Cont’d For this week's rotation, I was in general surgery on the eighth floor. I spent most of my time following my nurses as they helped give medication to the patients recovering from surgery. I also got to see the nurses bring patients into general surgery who had just gotten back from their procedure. The patients coming back from surgery were pretty tired, and the nurses just tried to make them as comfortable as possible. I also learned that my aunt works on the eighth floor, and I got to spend my second day of rotations shadowing her. It was nice to see a familiar face on one of these rotations. Overall, my time in General Surgery was uneventful and pretty similar to the other nursing stations I have been to this year.

14. Weekly Blogs Cont’d For my tenth week of rotations, I spent my time in the NCCU. On my first day, I learned a lot about the two different types of stroke. There are ischemic and hemorrhagic strokes and both are caused by different things. Strokes are the most common types of illnesses in the NCCU. Nothing too exciting happened on my first day. I did get to see my second PICC line inserted. On my second day, I followed a nurse the turned out to be related to me. besides the it was pretty much of a review of the first day. One of the nurse's patients sleep talked, though. Pretty Cool.

15. Weekly Blog’s Cont’d For my 15th week of rotations, I followed a respiratory therapist. This was exciting the first day and pretty boring the second. The first day I watched two interesting procedures. The first procedure was a scope to see if the patient's epiglottis was closing while he swallowed. This was pretty interesting because I got to see vocal chords and epiglottis. The next procedure was a brache, in which they scoped into the patient and scraped segments of the lung to check for cancer. This was interesting because I got to see inside of the patient's lungs. The second day I followed an RT and watched her administer basic respiratory medicine.

16. Weekly Blogs Cont’d For my first week of rotation, I spent my time down in the ER. I followed a couple different nurses, and for the most part, it stayed pretty mild. I was expecting a little more chaos from the ER, but instead, I found out that most of the action doesn't happen till hours after I leave. I was a little dissapointed, but I enjoyed the time I spent with the nursing staff. I felt the ER was a great learning experience. I hope to have a future in emergency medicine and look forward to my next rotation in the ER.

17. Hand Washing Presentation As part of our experience in Health Academy, we performed presentations that discussed proper hand and oral hygiene with underprivileged children. We also gave soap and toothbrushes to these children to help promote future hygiene. I enjoyed these presentation and felt the children learned valuable lessons

26. Career List 1. Medical Assistant- This job interests me because it is a way to get into the medical profession without having to invest vast amounts of money in Med School. In Kansas, this job requires a few months of schooling from Hutchinson Community College, Pratt Community College, or Butler County Community College. After you earn your certificate, you may get hired to receive more personal training on the job. Medical Assistants perform many tasks to help the physicians out and to allow the medical office to run smoothly. To help your application as a medical assistant, after schooling, you could volunteer at a local hospital, or possibly teach a CPR class at your local Red Cross. 2. Medical Transcriptionist- This job interests me because to perform is well, you must have a great knowledge of medical terminology. Also because it requires very little schooling and you could probably mess around on your computer a lot because it can be done from home. It is very important work to document people’s medical history because if you don’t, the doctor could make a terrible mistake. Most jobs prefer you to have completed a post-secondary training program but it is not required. To help your application you should have taken and done well in anatomy and physiology and a medical terminology course. 3. Physicians Assistant- This job interests me because it does not require going to Med School for many years, yet you may do many of the things that a physician does. A Physicians Assistant is often pre-treats the patient as to save the physician time. This requires taking a Physicians assistant program, which is usually a two-year program, and passing a national exam to get your license. To get into a PA Program, you usually have to have 2 years of college prior to the program and some healthcare experience. To help your application, you should excel in biology, mathematics, psychology, and social science courses.

32. Final Reflection Overall, I enjoyed my time in health academy. The medical terminology tests and professional lectures were very educational. I also enjoyed learning how to use basic medical equipment. Rotations provided me with some of the most interesting experiences. Health Academy was a good class that provided me with extremely helpful information for my future in the health industry.
