2. FADE IN:
INT. KITCHEN - DAY
SADE,(26), a beautiful, black woman sits by the kitchen
counter. R&B music plays softly in the background.
She stares into space, deep in thought. There are two
glasses of orange juice in front of her.
She picks up her phone, dials a number. It rings a few
times.
SADE
(softly)
Hello, mom?
Looking towards her bedroom door, she checks to see that no
one is coming.
Her mother is saying something she does not want to hear.
She shakes her head disapprovingly.
SADE
Mom! Why didn’t you call me when I
asked you to?! Now you have all
these things to say.
Sade listens.
SADE
Mom, I’m trying my best. (Beat) Ok,
let’s do this... I will text you
again in a couple minutes. Just
make sure you call me back
immediately to continue this
conversation. Deal?
The music plays.
SADE
Alright talk to you soon.
Sade hangs up, slides the phone in her back pocket. She
grabs the two glasses of orange juice and heads for the
bedroom.
3. 2.
INT. SADE’S BEDROOM - DAY
A clean, feminine but mature space. On the dresser is a
picture of a dressy, happy Sade with a bouquet in hand.
Sade sets the orange juice on a table so that it makes a
loud thump. She looks over to her bed and lying on it is
JERMAINE, (30), an handsome black man. The thump wakes him
up.
SADE
Did I wake you up?
JERMAINE
No. No. It was just a quick nap.
He takes a glass of juice. Jermaine has a corporate, office
shirt on.
JERMAINE
Thanks.
Sade smiles and sits beside him. Sneaking her phone, she
sends a text.
Quickly, she places the phone away. She waits anxiously, and
smiles sheepishly at Jermaine. He studies her.
Sade’s phone soon rings. She acts surprised.
SADE
(to Jermaine)
Oh! It’s my mom.
He smiles.
SADE
Hello, mom.
Sade moves closer to place her head on Jermaine’s chest.
Jermaine strokes her hair.
SADE
Huh? He’s fine. Yes, mom...What did
you say?
She increases the volume so Jermaine hears her mother
clearly.
He smiles, shaking his head subtly.
4. 3.
MOM (V.O)
Are you sure he has plans for you?
Look my dear, you are not getting
any younger.
SADE
Oh mummy I know.
She gives Jermaine a "what do you have to say" look.
Jermaine smiles at her. She does not find it funny.
MOM (V.O)
Do you hear me?
SADE
Mom, please let me call you back.
Beep. She drops the phone on the bed.
SADE
Why are you smiling? What’s funny?
Jermaine bursts out laughing. It gets louder until it is
teasing.
A frustrated Sade gets off the bed. Jermaine grabs her hand,
gently he pulls her back to him.
JERMAINE
Babe wait. Come on.
Sade avoids his gaze. He raises her face towards his.
JERMAINE
I’m sorry... (Beat) Wait, you
didn’t think I would know?
SADE
Know what? What are you talking
about?
JERMAINE
You are funny!
Sade wants a reply now.
JERMAINE
(still amused)
Ok. What is with all those sneaky,
little tricks of yours? I mean your
mom calling whenever you are with
me and you guys having the same

conversation every time. You didn’t
think I’ll figure it out someday?
She’s stunned. How did he know?!!
SADE
I’m lost. I don’t know what you are
talking about.
JERMAINE
Baby, I love you. I wanna be with
you. Trust me babe you’re not going
anywhere. I won’t let you. I can’t.
She looks away and steals a smile; a sign she wants to hear
more.
JERMAINE
What time is it?
He grabs his wrist-watch from the dresser, checks the time
and fastens it.
JERMAINE
Oh. I have to go.
Sade is hurt. Who leaves in the middle of this kind of
conversation?!
JERMAINE
You know, to the luncheon.
SADE
Bye.
Jermaine kisses her on the cheeks and dashes for the door.
Before he exits, he turns around.
JERMAINE
Babe, smile! How about you come
visit me later?
Sade is about to reply but Jermaine is gone. It is not a
question after all.
SADE
How about you leave me alone!
Asking me what time it is.
She listens to the tick tock sound of her wall clock.
6. 5.
SADE
I’ll tell you what time it is. Time
to put a ring on it and...
Sade inspects her left hand as she heads for her bathroom.
SADE
...stop leaving this beautiful hand
naked. Ughh. He makes me mad!
She slams the bathroom door.
