BIMarabia – Omar Selim
BIM & Supply Chain :
Supply chain includes logical sequence of the product starting from purchase of raw materials
and up to the production process and storage the finished product in its final form. . It is the
organizational and strategic coordination of usual functions and planning of these functions
within the company and through some steps within the supply chain to improve the long-term
performance of companies separately and for the whole supply chain.
The term of supply chain management is used to plan and manage all activities, as well as to
coordinate and synchronize each part of the facility, and to regulate supply and demand in the
BIMarabia – Omar Selim
entire facility and it was invented in 1980. BIM can facilitate the supply chain by knowing
subsequent steps in advance in many ways. This technology will not allow a step back because
it will at least provide information about finishing the raw materials accurately and ask for more
in order that the construction process will not stop.
Studying safety during the construction is one of the priorities of any project _ especially
massive projects_ because of its importance to the project workers, whether workers or
engineers. Incidents at construction sites are multiple, frequent and its victims are either
seriously injured or died and perhaps one of the biggest incidents of construction projects
recently is the fall of a crane in Mecca which caused 108 hajj dead and 238 injured, In addition
we do not forget death of 27 people during the construction of the Brooklyn Bridge.
In the Middle East, in Dubai 38% of construction deaths were due to inadequate supervision
and 25% were due to lack of training, in Saudi Arabia 48% of occupational injuries in 2011 were
in the construction industry and in Kuwait the percentage of injuries due to the fall from high rise
was 33.2% in 2007. All this in addition to repeated injury rates such as:

 3% of construction workers suffer from work-related illnesses.
 The percentage of the fall from a high place on the construction sites is 36.5%, on one of
the sites where I worked, an engineer fell in one of the openings which lead to his death.
 The percentage of injuries due to handling of things is 12.6%.
BIMarabia – Omar Selim
 The percentage of injuries due to electricity and welding is 8.6%.
Thus, we must recognize that there are a number of significant accidents during construction or
during operation and maintenance. How can BIM reduce these incidents?! Using BIM
technology in making site safety plans is a revolutionary step towards improving building safety.
Safety and safety of workers on the site is one of the important dimensions which be considered
in planning as in the third dimension, the fourth and fifth ... and others.

For example, on this subject in practical experiences in 2012 New York City became the
first municipality in the United States to agree on the program of three-dimensional site
safety plan that uses Building Information Modeling software (BIM) for allowing
construction industry to make safety plans for site workers. This program allow building
management in New York City to make a real tour of sites, watch building step by step,
imagine complexities and challenges of buildings, and verify compatibility of the basic
rules before manual review.
Practical steps:
 Merging safety plans into design through BIM.
BIMarabia – Omar Selim

 Using Prefabrication as far as possible instead of working on the site for a safe and
organized environment in order to reduce the probability of accidents. BIM technology
enables us to make the parts with high accuracy and print them with 3D printers, so that
the work on the site is limited to the installation of these parts.
Gilbane’s Director of Corporate Safety
BIMarabia – Omar Selim
 Tony O'Dea “Gilbane’s Director of Corporate Safety” says : (The
prefabrication process supported by BIM enables us to eliminate tens of thousands of
flights on stairs and elevators, thousands of hours of laborious work and general
construction activities in geometrically difficult situations)
 BIM can estimate risk before building and reduce repetition and deletion of processes as
a result of clash detection during implementation as well as implementation of safety on
sites.
o
 Analysis of safety risk , companies are using software to quickly check BIM models to
realize problems such as :
 Openingsof groundandroof
 Location of material storage and its nearness to fire hydrant and close structures
 Design standards of slopes in the site including landing distances up and down and
entry and exit sites.
 Size and schedules of the temporary work sites
 Control of erosion and sedimentation requirements
 The best of work paths in the site
For example, we can make tables of rooms, its area, its slope, determining the type of hazard
and its probability. The following forms illustrate examples:
BIMarabia – Omar Selim
The necessary safety rules are coordinated and simulation is done by using the BIM model. you
can know -using custom programs- openings places, draw escape paths and determine if there
are not enough spaces between fire hydrants. For example, the risk of falling from height
passes through three stages:
1. Definition: determination of unsafe places
BIMarabia – Omar Selim
2. General requirements: general requirements show the protection methods that should
be applied in a particular way
3. Prevention standards: risk prevention system
We determine the places where protection should be done through simulation programs
Protecting places where workers can fall from
BIMarabia – Omar Selim

 We can create a simulation -for example- for a crane or a wall falling, study the affected
area and know how to avoid the problem and damages.

 Live monitoring of workers' progress can be done by using sensors and alarms if a
worker approaches a hazardous area. After the required data is known in the previous
BIMarabia – Omar Selim
phase, calculation methods are used to create the safety algorithms that are then used
to make effective plans to control important safety plans such as preventing clash,
overcrowding of workers and equipment and recognizing hazardous areas in the site.
All collected data can be used in designer models and effective safety plans can be used
for other projects in the future.

 The iBeacon technology in smart phones can be used as a sensor and for determining
location of the worker. It uses the Bluetooth Low Energy technology in Bluetooth 4 and
the accelerometer as well as some sensors in the Global Positioning System to know
location. It is simply sending and receiving wireless signals via Bluetooth to find out your
location and direction and iBeacon is software that processes these signals together to
work as a wireless router or beacon that guides the receiver to specific locations, thus it
helps in implementation of instructional or marketing applications, as well as using this
technique for remote control of devices and payments by phone.
The following figure illustrates an example of technology research based on iBeacon
technology:


 Activation Facilities O & M planning with BIM model is considered a virtual model
simulation. Companies can work with facilities teams to improve maintenance tasks
faster and more safely.

 Coordination of daily safety - Safety managers can access to BIM model on the site,
which helps to improve inspections and ensure that safety conditions are achieved.

BIM and Augmented Reality:
Augmented Reality is a relatively new technology used to watch the model integrated with
reality. It is a technology that integrates reality with the imagination or image recorded on
computers, smart phones or even special glasses.
The idea of integrating the natural environment into the virtual environment existed from the
beginning of the seventies in the last century, but the level of scientific progress at this time did
not allow its emergence and development as it is now, when examples were produced but did
not come out of the laboratory because it was large and heavy. This new technology was in an
old film Back to Future, which was produced in the mid-eighties and I saw it. Modern Mobiles
facilitated spread of this technology. There is another different expression; it is a virtual reality
which is based on replacing the real environment with the virtual environment so that you see
the virtual environment only.
We can benefit from this technology in applying BIM in projects. This is through applications
installed on smart phones or tablets to be as a camera which we watch through it the building
designed by a BIM program, and then we can watch all the details of the building such as walls,
BIMarabia – Omar Selim
service pipes, furniture and other elements of the building in addition to seeing it as a three-
dimensional model. It is a good representation of all information related to this building.
. We'll mention some applications that can be installed:
1- AUGGED
You can set up the program from here
/http://www.auggd.com
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.easiar.auggd&hl=en
You can print the following image (you can try on the screen without printing it), open the
application on mobile then chose (project) and then write the name of project (BUD).
Finally, direct the camera towards the paper.
BIMarabia – Omar Selim
2- AURASMA
You can set up it and link an image with a video. Now run the application and go to this image.
https://www.aurasma.com/
BIMarabia – Omar Selim
3- SMARTREALITY
/http://smartreality.co
You can set up the application from here
4- CREATOR
/https://creator.zapcode.it
You can set up the application from here
The basic idea of these applications is converting extension of project file (in any format,
whether AutoCAD DWG or RVT) to an acceptable extension of AUGMENTED REALITY
programs.
BIM and Open Source Software
BIMarabia – Omar Selim
Software is the technical part of BIM technology, thus it is considered an important basis of BIM.
There are two types of software: closed programs (you cannot see their code) and open source
software.
Open source software is programs with Codes which are available, accessible and developed,
often free or cheap. As (Stallman) says «free software is software that respects your freedom»
The first who has created this concept is the programmer (Richard Matthew Stallman),
He also says (I could make money from this and I might please myself by writing a source code.
But I knew that at the end of my career, I will remember the years of building fences to disperse
people and I will feel that I spent my life trying to make the World a worse place)
In order to make the program open source, four freedoms must be there:
 The first freedom: the freedom to use the program for any purpose. There are
companies require specific purposes to use their programs.
 The second freedom: the freedom to study and modify the source code of the program.
Most of the other programs are closed and its code is secret.
 The third freedom: the freedom to distribute copies of the original program to be able to
help your neighbor or your friend.
 The fourth freedom: the freedom of distributing your modified copies of the program and
sharing your modification with community.
BIMarabia – Omar Selim

The most famous open source programs are
 The popular browser (Firefox) is one of the best free web browsers in the world.
 (Free Download Manager) is an excellent and free program to download from the
internet.
 (Virtual Box) simulate computer so that it creates a computer model within the operating
system to install another compact operating system.
 (GIMP) is a free program which competes against Photoshop.
 (Inkscape) is a drawing program.
 (Blender) is a 3D graphics competitor against (3Ds Max). Despite its small size - almost
70 MB - its functions is more than (3Ds Max of 7 GB hard drive( such as existence of its
respective games engine (Games Engine), and some films have been made using it and
the same films are open source which you can modify it freely such as Sintel film.
 (Sweet Home 3D) is a fantastic and simple program to design the decor of your
apartment easily and place the furniture, even if you are not a specialist.
 (Pdf Creator) is a program to print pdf files.
Open-source software for BIM:
Unfortunately there is not a lot of open source software for modeling operations and this
might not be changed soon, but there are many programs that allow handling BIM models
such as its reviewing like (Free BIM Viewer) or having reports on its information or
verification of data quality. Here comes the importance of relying on formulas or systematic
coordination that doesn’t belong to any commercial company for exchanging of data, such
as (IFC).

Examples of the programs:
● ifcwebserver is the site for browsing (IFC) files and exporting to any formula you want (
XML & IFC & CSV & JSON). Its link is www.ifcwebserver.org
 www.bimviewer.com You can download IFC files. Thus, they will be available for
everyone on the Internet.
● BIMsurfer to display IFC files
BIMarabia – Omar Selim
● http://freecadweb.org/ isa CAD program which lists have been added to join BIM
programs
● B-processor is a BIM program coded and developed by (Arhus School of Architecture
in cooperation) with (the Alexandra institute) to compete with Revit and Archicad. The
program follows the basic BIM concepts and it is developed from scratch.

 (4BIM) is an on-line available tool based on IFC and its link is :
OurProduct/4BIM.aspxhttp://www.4projects.com/
BIMarabia – Omar Selim

 Gestion Revit is a free program to manage Revit database access.
http://sourceforge.net/projects/gestionrevit/?source=directory
BIMarabia – Omar Selim
 OpenMaint is a free opensource program to manage facilities which helps in
decision-making and supports BIM. The program can be downloaded from
http://www.openmaint.org/en
 SMARTDataBees is an open sourceprogram to manage Database (facility
management) and supports (CAFM,FM, MySQL, MS-SQL, SQLight)
versions. The program can be downloaded from
http://sourceforge.net/projects/osfm/?source=directory

http://sourceforge.net/projects/konsol
 Konsol is an open sourceprogram (not completed yet) to create 3D
buildings (architecturally, structurally, mechanically and electrically). Hopes
held on Arabs and Muslims programmers to unite in this project in order to
gain invaluable experience. The program can be downloaded from
http://sourceforge.net/projects/konsol
We wish that open source programs will spread because it will save billions for our Arab
countries annually and I hope that I have helped in drawing attention to open source programs.

All this in addition to repeated injury rates such as:   3% of construction workers suffer from work-related illnesses.  The percentage of the fall from a high place on the construction sites is 36.5%, on one of the sites where I worked, an engineer fell in one of the openings which lead to his death.  The percentage of injuries due to handling of things is 12.6%.
  • 3. BIMarabia – Omar Selim  The percentage of injuries due to electricity and welding is 8.6%. Thus, we must recognize that there are a number of significant accidents during construction or during operation and maintenance. How can BIM reduce these incidents?! Using BIM technology in making site safety plans is a revolutionary step towards improving building safety. Safety and safety of workers on the site is one of the important dimensions which be considered in planning as in the third dimension, the fourth and fifth ... and others.  For example, on this subject in practical experiences in 2012 New York City became the first municipality in the United States to agree on the program of three-dimensional site safety plan that uses Building Information Modeling software (BIM) for allowing construction industry to make safety plans for site workers. This program allow building management in New York City to make a real tour of sites, watch building step by step, imagine complexities and challenges of buildings, and verify compatibility of the basic rules before manual review. Practical steps:  Merging safety plans into design through BIM.
  • 4. BIMarabia – Omar Selim   Using Prefabrication as far as possible instead of working on the site for a safe and organized environment in order to reduce the probability of accidents. BIM technology enables us to make the parts with high accuracy and print them with 3D printers, so that the work on the site is limited to the installation of these parts. Gilbane’s Director of Corporate Safety
  • 5. BIMarabia – Omar Selim  Tony O'Dea “Gilbane’s Director of Corporate Safety” says : (The prefabrication process supported by BIM enables us to eliminate tens of thousands of flights on stairs and elevators, thousands of hours of laborious work and general construction activities in geometrically difficult situations)  BIM can estimate risk before building and reduce repetition and deletion of processes as a result of clash detection during implementation as well as implementation of safety on sites. o  Analysis of safety risk , companies are using software to quickly check BIM models to realize problems such as :  Openingsof groundandroof  Location of material storage and its nearness to fire hydrant and close structures  Design standards of slopes in the site including landing distances up and down and entry and exit sites.  Size and schedules of the temporary work sites  Control of erosion and sedimentation requirements  The best of work paths in the site For example, we can make tables of rooms, its area, its slope, determining the type of hazard and its probability. The following forms illustrate examples:
  • 6. BIMarabia – Omar Selim The necessary safety rules are coordinated and simulation is done by using the BIM model. you can know -using custom programs- openings places, draw escape paths and determine if there are not enough spaces between fire hydrants. For example, the risk of falling from height passes through three stages: 1. Definition: determination of unsafe places
  • 7. BIMarabia – Omar Selim 2. General requirements: general requirements show the protection methods that should be applied in a particular way 3. Prevention standards: risk prevention system We determine the places where protection should be done through simulation programs Protecting places where workers can fall from
  • 8. BIMarabia – Omar Selim   We can create a simulation -for example- for a crane or a wall falling, study the affected area and know how to avoid the problem and damages.   Live monitoring of workers' progress can be done by using sensors and alarms if a worker approaches a hazardous area. After the required data is known in the previous
  • 9. BIMarabia – Omar Selim phase, calculation methods are used to create the safety algorithms that are then used to make effective plans to control important safety plans such as preventing clash, overcrowding of workers and equipment and recognizing hazardous areas in the site. All collected data can be used in designer models and effective safety plans can be used for other projects in the future.   The iBeacon technology in smart phones can be used as a sensor and for determining location of the worker. It uses the Bluetooth Low Energy technology in Bluetooth 4 and the accelerometer as well as some sensors in the Global Positioning System to know location. It is simply sending and receiving wireless signals via Bluetooth to find out your location and direction and iBeacon is software that processes these signals together to work as a wireless router or beacon that guides the receiver to specific locations, thus it helps in implementation of instructional or marketing applications, as well as using this technique for remote control of devices and payments by phone. The following figure illustrates an example of technology research based on iBeacon technology:
  • 10. BIMarabia – Omar Selim   Activation Facilities O & M planning with BIM model is considered a virtual model simulation. Companies can work with facilities teams to improve maintenance tasks faster and more safely.   Coordination of daily safety - Safety managers can access to BIM model on the site, which helps to improve inspections and ensure that safety conditions are achieved.

  • 12. BIMarabia – Omar Selim BIM and Augmented Reality: Augmented Reality is a relatively new technology used to watch the model integrated with reality. It is a technology that integrates reality with the imagination or image recorded on computers, smart phones or even special glasses. The idea of integrating the natural environment into the virtual environment existed from the beginning of the seventies in the last century, but the level of scientific progress at this time did not allow its emergence and development as it is now, when examples were produced but did not come out of the laboratory because it was large and heavy. This new technology was in an old film Back to Future, which was produced in the mid-eighties and I saw it. Modern Mobiles facilitated spread of this technology. There is another different expression; it is a virtual reality which is based on replacing the real environment with the virtual environment so that you see the virtual environment only. We can benefit from this technology in applying BIM in projects. This is through applications installed on smart phones or tablets to be as a camera which we watch through it the building designed by a BIM program, and then we can watch all the details of the building such as walls,
  • 13. BIMarabia – Omar Selim service pipes, furniture and other elements of the building in addition to seeing it as a three- dimensional model. It is a good representation of all information related to this building. . We'll mention some applications that can be installed: 1- AUGGED You can set up the program from here /http://www.auggd.com https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.easiar.auggd&hl=en You can print the following image (you can try on the screen without printing it), open the application on mobile then chose (project) and then write the name of project (BUD). Finally, direct the camera towards the paper.

BIM and Open Source Software
  • 16. BIMarabia – Omar Selim Software is the technical part of BIM technology, thus it is considered an important basis of BIM. There are two types of software: closed programs (you cannot see their code) and open source software. Open source software is programs with Codes which are available, accessible and developed, often free or cheap. As (Stallman) says «free software is software that respects your freedom» The first who has created this concept is the programmer (Richard Matthew Stallman), He also says (I could make money from this and I might please myself by writing a source code. But I knew that at the end of my career, I will remember the years of building fences to disperse people and I will feel that I spent my life trying to make the World a worse place) In order to make the program open source, four freedoms must be there:  The first freedom: the freedom to use the program for any purpose. There are companies require specific purposes to use their programs.  The second freedom: the freedom to study and modify the source code of the program. Most of the other programs are closed and its code is secret.  The third freedom: the freedom to distribute copies of the original program to be able to help your neighbor or your friend.  The fourth freedom: the freedom of distributing your modified copies of the program and sharing your modification with community.
  • 17. BIMarabia – Omar Selim  The most famous open source programs are  The popular browser (Firefox) is one of the best free web browsers in the world.  (Free Download Manager) is an excellent and free program to download from the internet.  (Virtual Box) simulate computer so that it creates a computer model within the operating system to install another compact operating system.  (GIMP) is a free program which competes against Photoshop.  (Inkscape) is a drawing program.  (Blender) is a 3D graphics competitor against (3Ds Max). Despite its small size - almost 70 MB - its functions is more than (3Ds Max of 7 GB hard drive( such as existence of its respective games engine (Games Engine), and some films have been made using it and the same films are open source which you can modify it freely such as Sintel film.  (Sweet Home 3D) is a fantastic and simple program to design the decor of your apartment easily and place the furniture, even if you are not a specialist.  (Pdf Creator) is a program to print pdf files. Open-source software for BIM: Unfortunately there is not a lot of open source software for modeling operations and this might not be changed soon, but there are many programs that allow handling BIM models such as its reviewing like (Free BIM Viewer) or having reports on its information or verification of data quality. Here comes the importance of relying on formulas or systematic coordination that doesn’t belong to any commercial company for exchanging of data, such as (IFC).  Examples of the programs: ● ifcwebserver is the site for browsing (IFC) files and exporting to any formula you want ( XML & IFC & CSV & JSON). Its link is www.ifcwebserver.org  www.bimviewer.com You can download IFC files. Thus, they will be available for everyone on the Internet. ● BIMsurfer to display IFC files
