2. What was
apartheid?
• Apartheid was a system put in place by the
Afrikaner National Party in 1948 which
allowed for lawful segregation racial divides.
• The policy governs South Africa for nearly 50
years but racial segregation existed a long
before apartheid began.
• More than 3 decades later the practice of
systematic racial segregation was given the
name apartheid and it was extended under
the government led by national party.
• The party’s goal was to separate white
minority from it non-majority.

• They did this by putting in place race laws
touching every expect of life.
• Providing equal opportunities for basic
human rights to people of colour.
• Detecting where they live, work, or go to
school.
• All based on their race.

classification
• The race classification act put people into 4
different categories.
• Whites at the top followed by Indians,
coloureds, and blacks at the bottom.
• Within these groups they were sub-groups
further segregation ethnic and tribal groups.
• Black South Africans were forced to carry
identification at all times.

commissions
led to the
National
Party
adaptation of
the policy of
apartheid?
• United and National Party set up
commissions to suggest strategies to deal
with SA’s racial problems.
• Recommended the acceptance of whites
and other races existing side by side as the
only feasible option.
• Recommended that entrenched and
formalised segregation of all the races was
the only way to ensure future of each race.
• It strongly recommended apartheid as a
policy.
9. How did the HNP won the
1948 elections?
• The National Party formed new government under
the leadership of DF Malan while the United Party
became the Official Opposition.
