3. What is
apartheid?
• Apartheid is a system of racial segregation that was implemented by the
Afrikaner National Party in South Africa from 1948 to 1994.
• The English word for Apartheid is Apartness.
• This system of government divided racial groups making the white race supreme
than other races.
• The supremacy of whites gave them right to rule and control the country, no
other race was lawfully allowed to.
• The race that is found to be mostly impacted by this system is that of
blacks/natives.

4. IMPACTS OF APARTHEID
• Race classification act was put into place dividing four races
from most to least powerful : Whites, Indians, Colored then
Blacks.
• The least powerful race were forced to move from
their land and some were used as laborers.
• Blacks had no right to vote.
• 1910: Black people did not have parliamentary rights.
• 1913: Land Act was established denying Blacks from buying
land outside of their reserves.
• Families were separated and Blacks had to carry passes with
them everywhere they go.

5. END OF APARTHEID
• Apartheid ended after the released of Nelson Mandela on 11th
February 1990 who became the first black president of South Africa.
• He became president with majority votes from Blacks who at the time
were allowed to vote for the first time.
