3. WHAT IS
APARTHEID ?
• Apartheid is an Afrikaans
name that means apartness.
• Apartheid is the legally
racially segregated system
of government that was
implemented by the National
Party government in South
Africa from 1948 till 1994.
• The system that deprived
the non-white the right to
vote.

• The system that was implemented to separate
the non-white population and the white
population.
• During this era act or laws were established to
promote the separation of non-whites and
whites.
• The laws promoted racial segregation

• Population registration (1950)
• Pass law (1952)
• Group areas act (1950)
• Immorality or mixed marriage(1945)
6. Population
registration act
A government bureau classified race into three
categories: White Black and coloured
The whites, coloured ,and blacks have their
own places.
The were not even allowed to share public
places.
They had different sport in the beaches,
different bus station and different public toilets.
7. Group areas act
• Africans without jobs were compelled to
move to the countryside.
• They were forced to commute to jobs as
gardeners, housekeepers, and factory
workers
• They lived in one family homes with only two
to three rooms and frequently had no
electricity, running water, or sewer systems
• Millions of Africans were reassigned.
8. PASS LAW
• Pass laws were used to control the
movement of Black Africans during
apartheid
• They are regarded as one of the most
heinous methods used by the South
African government to support apartheid.
Pass laws and made it illegal for Black
people to enter cities without first finding
work.
• It was illegal for a Black person to travel
without a passbook.
9. Immoral or mixed marriage
• This act prohibited the marriage between
the non-white and white couple.
• The non-white and whites were not allowed
to be in the relationship
• After being caught being in the relationship
the non-white received the severe
punishment.
10. Effects of apartheid
• Blacks were arrested and had to
carry pass everywhere they go
• Black population was
discriminated was not allowed to
vote
• They suffered from poverty and
they were placed in low paying
jobs
• Blacks lost their homes and live
when resisting.
