Apartheid was a system of legal racial segregation and discrimination in South Africa between 1948 and 1993, which separated races politically and geographically. The apartheid laws institutionalized racial discrimination and affected every aspect of social life, prohibiting marriage between races, reserving "white-only" jobs, and requiring all South Africans to be classified and registered as either white, black, or colored based on appearance, ancestry, and social acceptance.
