4. What is a STEAM BOILER ?
A closed vessel that heats water to become hot water or
steam .
It’s function is to transfer the heat produced by the
combustion of fuel to water and generate steam .
Also called STEAM GENERATOR .

Boiler Shell :
Made up of steel plates bent into cylindrical form.
Closed end.
Should have sufficient storage capacity.
9. Combustion Chamber
It is the space where fuel burns for producing the
steam from water.
Grate
Actually the place in combustion chamber where fuel
burn.
Consists of Cast Iron bars having sufficient space for
air required for combustion.
10. Furnace
It is the place in which fuel is actually burnt.
Also called FIRE BOX.
11. Mountings
These are the devices mounted on boiler.
Used for proper functioning.
Examples:
Water level indicator
Pressure gauge
Safety valve etc

A pressure gauge is fitted in front of boiler.
It shows the pressure of steam.
Usually connected to the steam space.
Safety Valve:
Located on top of boiler.
They guard the boiler against the excessive high
pressure of steam.
The escape of steam makes a audio noise.

Most of the boiler are fitted with accessories.
Used for increasing the efficiency or help in working.
