3. What is an Element?
Element is a pure type of substance composed of the same type of
atoms with the same atomic number and cannot be separated by
common physical means.
Total118 known elements in the universe.
Note: (Around 90 elements have been found in the Earth and
atmosphere. Scientists have made nearly 30 others in the lab).
7. Quick learning Assessment
The symbols for some elements come from their Latin names. See if
you can identify the element whose Latin name is:
a. Natrium
b. Ferrum
c. Plumbum
d. Argentum
8. What is a Compound?
• Compound is a pure form of substance that is formed when two or
more elements are chemically combined together in a fixed ratio by
mass.
• Examples:
2H + O =H2O Water
Na + Cl = NaCl Sodium Chloride
C + 2O= CO2 Carbon dioxide
9. 1. What are the fundamental particles of atoms?
2. What is the atomic number?
(Similar for all Atoms of element)
3. What is the mass Number?
(Different for atoms)
4. The concept of Isotope arise from atomic mass
10. What is an Isotope?
• Isotopes are atoms of the same element, with different
numbers of neutrons.
