2. RULES: Continuous Past
(Conjugation).
• The structure of the Continuous Past (Past Continuous Tense) is:
• [SUJETO] + was/were + [VERBO con terminación -ing ]
Conjugación Significado
I was working yo estaba trabajando
you were working tú estabas trabajando
he was working
él estaba trabajando
we were working nosotros estabamos trabajando
you were working vosotros estabais trabajando
they were working ellos estaban trabajando
3. RULES: Continuous Past (Denial)
• Negation is formed by simply adding the adverb "no" from the verb "to be" (was / were)
and the main verb of the sentence:
• [SUJETO] + was/were not + [VERBO con la terminación -ing ( gerundio)]
• Examples:
• I was not singing
• He was not singing
4. RULES: Continuous Past
(Interrogation)
• To construct the query simply the verb "to be" and the subject is reversed:
Structure of the question:
• was/were + [SUJETO]+ [VERBO con la terminación -ing ( gerundio)]

were you singing? ¿estabas cantando?
was he singing? ¿estaba cantando?
were we singing? ¿estabamos cantando?
were you singing? ¿estabais cantando?
were they singing? ¿estaban cantando?
5. Exercise:
• To form the past continuous auxiliary verb "to be" and the gerund (infinitive + "-ing") of
the verb is used. The auxiliary verb "to be" is in the simple past, but keep in mind that "to
be" is an irregular verb.
