Algae can be used to produce biodiesel as a renewable fuel alternative. Algae are grown in containment pools and fed oils to produce lipid oils, over half the algae's mass, which can then be converted into biodiesel through a process of mixing with methanol and lye. Biodiesel produced from algae costs only 5 cents per gallon to produce, much cheaper than the $4 per gallon cost of normal gasoline. The author argues that algae biodiesel should be researched further to enable mass production and help achieve energy independence.
