2. 5. In questions, subjects do not always
come before verbs. Identify the subject
before deciding on the proper verb form
to use.
Example:
Where are the pieces of this puzzle?
Where is the key I left on the desk?
3. 6. If two subjects joined by and, they
typically require a plural verb form.
Example: The boy and the girl are helping
each other.
Liza and Kath are good
actresses.
The cow and the pig are jumping
over the moon.
4. 7. The verb is singular if two subjects
separated by and refer to the same
person or thing.
Example:
Pork and beans is my mom’s favorite
dish.
Spaghetti and meatballs is a great
meal.
5. 8. If one of the words each, every, or no
comes before the subject, the verb is
singular.
Example: Every man and woman is
required to vote.
Each student gives book to
poor children.
6. 9. If the subjects are both singular and
are connected by the words or, nor,
neither/nor, either/or, and not only/but
also, the verb is singular.
Example: Neither Janet nor Christine is
to blame for the mistake.
Either the bears or the lion has
escaped from the zoo.
