2. What are parts of speech?
Part of speech can be defined as a class of
words identified according to the kinds of
ideas they express and the way they work in
a sentence.
Parts of speech are also known as word class
or grammatical category.
There are 8 parts of speech.

4. Adverb
 An adverb is a word that can modify or
describe a verb, adjective, adverb, or entire
sentence.
 example:
 Thabang is running quickly.
 This door opens frequently.
 Quickly and frequently are adverbs

5. noun
Noun is a naming word.
A name of a person, place or thing.
Examples:
Car, Ndumiso, Johannesburg, cow, etc.

6. Adjective
 It is a word that describes or modifies a noun
or pronoun in a sentence.
 Examples:
 The boy is tall and skinny.
 Tall and skinny are adjectives because they
describe a noun (the boy).

7. pronoun
 A word that is used to replace a noun in a sentence.
 Examples include: he, she, they, it, few, many, who,
whoever, etc.
 Sipho is writing an assignment. He is writing an
assignment.
 From the sentence above, Sipho (noun) is replaced by a
pronoun He since Sipho is a male.

8. conjunction
 Conjunction is a word that joins
parts of a sentence, phrases or
other words together.
Examples: for, and, nor, but, or,
yet, whereas, etc.

9. verb
 A word that describes what a subject is
doing.
 Also known as action word.
 Examples: run, write, bath, cook, etc.

10. preposition
 A preposition introduces a noun or pronoun or a
phrase or clause functioning in the sentence as a
noun.
 Examples: behind, below, in, into, over, by,
beyond, etc.

11. interjection
Interjection in an exclamatory word that
expresses emotion.
Example: Wow! Look at this car!.
