1. Evaluation
Before starting my task I firstly analysed two front cover pages from a student magazine and two
contents pages.
From my front cover analysis I have learnt where and why certain elements are placed on the front
cover of a magazine. For example the title is called a masthead and it is placed at the top of the page
in big bold writing so that it is memorable and clear to see to the target audience. I have benefitted
from learning this because I have placed my masthead at the top with a funky bold typeface making
it clear to my audience which magazine they are reading.
I have also learnt that on a contents page it is good to use columns to keep it an easy read and to
make sure everything looks in its place. Page numbers are also a good help for readers trying to find
what they are looking for. I have used this within my own work to make it look more professional
and tidy.
After analysing all four of them, I created a questionnaire for my fellow classmates to complete to give me a
good idea on what they would want to see within a student magazine. It included questions such as; What
does a front cover need to get you to pick it up off of the shelf? What articles would interest you within the
magazine? This helped me to gain information and feedback to apply onto my front cover and contents page
to make it the best it could be for my target audience which is ages 16-19.
Overall I learned the main elements of a front cover and why they are put there which helped me a lot to
change and rearrange my own layouts to make them the best they can be.
