Film Studies 3 - Relationship between Producers and Audiences
1. Harry Potter
and the Deathly Hallows Part 2
Relationship between Producers & Audiences Assessment
2. Poster
⢠Content of images
The poster uses the main character of Harry Potter as the focus for the
poster, with the two other main protagonist characters beside, but slightly
behind him. This expresses the importance of them all within the film and
represents how they have to work together in the âfinal showdownâ of the
movie. The background shows the highly significant Hogwarts in which the
majority of each Harry Potter movie is set, an iconic place which will catch
the attention of the fans. It shows the characters amongst some ruins,
which indicates / foreshadows what will happen in the film, making it more
exciting but nerve wracking for the regular viewers. It shows this in order
to attract the existing as well as a new audience and give them a glimpse of
what theyâll want to watch, without giving anything away and revealing if
the three protagonists will become victorious or not.
⢠Colour
The colour scheme for the poster includes a lot of dull and muted blue
tones. When looking into the connotations of this colour within film, is
usually represents calm and peace however completely contrasts with the
main idea of the poster. This could potentially give away the outcome of the
film, although shadows of a more intense black colour have been placed
strategically to indicate a more dark and complicated storyline, creating a
sense of wonder for the audience that are going to view it. Another thing to
notice about the poster is the slight white glow that surrounds Harry. Again
this can indicate peace and therefore reflect what he has wanted
throughout all of the films. The colour white also has a connotation of
innocence, which is all that Harry Potter has ever been throughout his life
and this reflects the vulnerability of him, especially when he was a child as
shown in the first few films and revealed from the overall plot.
Compared to the posters from the other films, we can see a progression of
colour through how each film has been advertised. In the beginning, we saw
a lot more warmer colours and tones being used, which has gradually
changed over time to fit the plot of each film individually.
3. Poster
⢠Text/fonts
The font used within the poster is the same as used within
every Harry Potter film, advertisement, etc. It allows for
immediate identification from fans and audiences who will
know exactly which film franchise it is from. It says the main
name of the film and which film in the franchise that it is which
is one of the main focuses for the poster, allowing those who
are more unfamiliar with the franchise to know what it is,
however people usually are aware due to the iconic characters
even if they havenât watched the films. Just below, the text
states âit all ends 7.15â which gives the release date but also
makes the audience wonder whatâs going to happen within the
film, creating tension and excitement for them.
⢠Layout
The image is laid out with all the important text and writing at
the bottom which allows for the viewers to focus on the
characters and what is displayed on the poster. The three main
characters from the film are the only ones displayed on the
poster, with Harry Potter, being the main character, placed
slightly in front of the other two and slightly larger as well. He
is the focus of all the films and the poster perfectly shows this.
The other two (Ron and Hermione) are looking at him and are
this shows that theyâre there to support Harry throughout the
final battle as they all work together. It suggests the storyline is
highly revolved around the group which is what a lot of people
would want to see.
4. Poster
⢠Listing of stars/previous films/directors
Fans and audience members of the film are generally
aware of the famous casting for the film and so thereâs no
large headlines that identify the leading roles of the film.
Appreciation is highly given from the fans for each actor /
actress in the film and therefore by not listing each name
in the poster, it allows more concentration on portraying
the characters and reflecting the storyline visually which
will most likely be more attention grabbing to those who
are going to see the poster and watch the film.
⢠Tone created
The tone created from the poster is dark and serious. This
tone is done a represented through the colour scheme as
well as other features such as the expression of the
characterâs faces and the environment theyâre in. The
three protagonists all look determined however at the
same time as being unsure of what is going to happen in
the end. The storm shown in the sky is perhaps one that
reflects the storm that is going to be created within the
plot and therefore adds to the serious overall tone of the
poster. The use of the blood splatter works well alongside
this and indicates a potential sinister and more serious
plot, resulting in death or injury of someone in the plot.

6. Trailer
⢠Content of the video clips
In the trailer, we see a series of clips from throughout the film.
This way, spoilers arenât given and it creates more tension for
the audience. It allows them to interpret it in whatever way
they wish and heighten anticipation for when the film is
released. The clips are short and show the action from the
build up to and duration of the Battle of Hogwarts. This
content will appeal to the audience as it will affect them
emotionally, due to it being the last film in the Harry Potter
franchise. They will know what they want to see within the
final movie, so these short snippets will attract them and give
them an idea of what is to come.
⢠Music
The music within the trailer begins with the Harry Potter music
that is highly recognisable by lots of people. This soon fades
into an orchestral piece with a voiceover from Lord Voldemort
addressing Harry Potter. It also includes small clips of dialogue
from the other main characters, creating emotion alongside
the soundtrack being played as you wonder what is going to
happen to them. The purpose of this particular music within
the trailer is to heighten emotion and intensify the action that
is being shown.

7. Trailer
⢠Listing of stars/previous films/directors
In the trailer, none of the previous films, stars or directors are
listed. This is because of the fact that most people know by now
who is involved within the franchise. Apart from this, the
production companies for the film, Warner Brothers and Heyday
Films, are shown in a smaller text, so that people are reminded.
As well as this text, it is also advertised that the film is going to
be available in IMAX, 3D and 2D cinemas, widening the places
where people can go to view the film. It is useful for the
production companies as if people enjoy the films, it may attract
them to some of the other films that that particular company
has produced.
⢠Genre codes and conventions
The film as a whole is part of the fantasy genre due to the main
conventions of wizardry and magic. In the trailer, aspects of this
are shown yet people automatically know what the films are
based around. By showing aspects of the fantasy genre within
the trailer, it allows for expansion of the audience if fantasy is
the kind of thing that they like and are interested in. It also
helps to retain the existing fans not just through the story line
but the continuity of the themes that are displayed within the
film. Showing a clear genre within the trailer is really important
as if the film wasnât portrayed properly, it may attract the wrong
audiences leading to disappointment once the film is released.

8. Trailer
⢠Relevance of release date
The release date for this film was July 15th 2011 which is
told at the end of the trailer. This is important so that the
audience know when theyâre able to go see the film as
soon as they can, which is most likely to maximise sales
if they know when itâs coming out to view.
⢠Tone created
Again, just like the posters, the tone created is serious
which creates continuity within the advertising of the
film. This is done by using various close ups of
characters, showing their expressions and reactions
when in a situation that is unknown to the viewer as of
yet. It is also done through slow motion shots and other
aspects such as the music and voiceovers added to the
clip. It will appeal especially to the existing audiences as
it will increase their emotions due to it being the last
film in the franchise and everyone will have certain
expectations for it.

10. Interview
⢠Relevance of who its with
This particular interview shows two of the main character,
Emma Watson and Rupert Grint, talking about the final
Harry Potter movie. Theyâre speaking formally while clearly
showing their excitement, as well as through the use of
their body language, which is what their target audience
will be able to relate to. Both of their fan bases range
mainly from children to young adults, which is the same as
those who watch the Harry Potter films. Theyâre dressed
casually as it seems to just be a relaxed interview however
their outfits for something like this is not what their
audiences would focus on. One of the main discussions
within the interview is the actors talking about the kiss they
both share within the final instalment of the film,
something which a lot of the viewers had been anticipating
throughout the other films.
Apart from Daniel Radcliffe, these actors have two of the
largest parts in the movies, meaning they have a large
audience appeal. With them showing their excitement for
the film, it will increase audience appeal and their
excitement too, meaning theyâll have high expectations for
the film.
The interview has been published online, which means it is
available to watch at any time as well as being suitable for
their particular audiences.

11. Interview
⢠What time of day was it broadcast?
The interview was published during the day but wasnât
broadcast on television. This means that all audience
members have it available to watch whenever theyâd
like. This means that the interview is most likely to
benefit from a larger number of people being able to
watch and increase awareness of the film and whatâs to
come.
⢠Discussion points
The topics discussed includes the onscreen kiss
between the two friends in the film as well as general
excitement for the film. It also is discussed how the
actors feel about it being the last film in the franchise
which is likely to make the audience emotional and be
able to relate to the actors. Due to the audience being
quite young, these are the kind of topics that theyâre
interested in despite them going to see the film
regardless of what is spoken about in an interview due
to their commitment and following to the franchise as a
whole.

13. Marketing Strategy
⢠Discuss relevant notable information you have noticed regarding the marketing
strategy of the film
The first trailer was released on April 27th 2011, just under 3 months before the film was going to
be released. This allows for anticipation and excitement to build up for the fans but early on. Just
as the hype of the film starts to die down and quieten before release, a second trailer was released
on June 16th, just a month before the release, which will build the excitement back up again and
retain this for the fans until the day they can finally watch it. The second trailer is more of a recap
of Harryâs life and what has prepared him for this final big moment in the film.
A lot of marketing was also done online, such a theatrical trailer playing automatically when
visiting the website, as well as various things from the film, including soundtracks, downloadable
posters, and screensavers. The website also had a shop, which allowed fans to purchase
merchandise ahead of the films release and show their support for it before it even came out.
TV advertising would indicate it is the final battle between Harry Potter and Lord Voldemort in
shorter clips whilst still giving off the same level of excitement as a trailer would.
Placement of adverts included large posters in bus stops and billboards in the street. The main
poster from the series that were created would be used as it creates a sense of eye contact
between Harry Potter and whoever is looking at the poster, making it feel more realistic and
attracts people to look at the poster.
