PRE-PRODUCTION.
 PRELIMINARY EXERCISE: this exercise was to assist us in
gaining the required skills as young producers of a film in order
to be able to integrate a variety of shots, camera angles and to
use continuity editing perfectly . Again, how to set up a camera
properly to avoid the camera from falling off the tripod was
another important part of the preliminary exercise .
 We also needed to learn about pre-production skills as well as
post –productions for example , making a storyboard based on
our ideas , writing of a script by using the right formatting tools
and basic editing techniques.
EVALUATION OF THE
PRELIMINARY EXERCISE
 Our preliminary exercise made up aware of a whole lot of issues
when it comes to using the camera.
 We had problems with the lighting of the camera even though we
wanted a low key lighting to an extend but after our post-production
we realised that the lighting was very bad and it was difficult to
even see the characters . However, we didn’t have any issues with
the continuity editing and we obeyed the 180 degree rule which was
very impressive . The sound was also good and we were able to use
a variety of shots such as long shots ,over the shoulder shots , mid
shots close-ups.
 We employed shot reverse shot , match on action and point of
views in our editing techniques.

PRODUCTION/CONSTRU
CTION
 Due to the problems we faced in our preliminary exercise ,we
learnt to be considerate when it comes to making decisions
concerning our main media product.
 We decided to choose a location that matches our storyline,
also this location had to be convienient for all the group
members.
 We also agreed on a simple costume (school uniform)to
establish how a character is being represented. No special
props were used in this unlike our preliminary.
EDITING
 Continuity Editing is the maintenance a logical flow of a sequence . We learnt
about how to make our film to flow seamlessly so that the audience does not notice
constructions from many different angles ad shots.
 We used a editing techniques such as shot-reverse shots, reaction shots, match
on action, prevalence,.
 I have also learnt that Editing is primarily related to narrative and this helps
influence the audience’s reading of a character and to the extent of empathizing
with the character.
CAMERAWORK
 We learnt about a variety of shots such as establishing shots,
long/extreme long shots , high /low angle, pan, Point-of-view shots and
close ups.
 I learnt that these shots keeps an audience intrigued and they are
able to interpret or symphathize with the character. E.g a hand held shot
gives a shaky feeling which makes the scene realistic or makes audience
feel like a part of the action and or excitement going on in the film.
 We decided on these shots because we wanted our audience to be
able to relate to it.
180 DEGREE RULE
180 DEGREE RULE
 I learnt that this rule is often called ‘‘The Line’’ or the ‘’The
line of action’’. An imaginary line that can be drawn between
two characters, and the camera must stay on one side of the
line.
 180° rule is essential element of film when it comes to
continuity editing.
RULE OF THIRDS.
 I also learnt about the compositional rule of thumb in
visual arts such as photography and painting , however this
is also used in film.
 This rule states that an image should be imagined as
divided into nine equal parts by two equally spaced horizontal
lines and vertical lines.
 This helps creates more tension, energy and interest in
the composition than simply centering the subject would.
POST-PRODUCTON
 After filming our two – minute opening title sequence we had to do
our editing which we didn’t have much problems with the editing due to
the fact that we did master the editing during our preliminary exercise.
 By contrast we had issues with the sound that we had to use. Firstly
we had difficulties deciding on the limited horror soundtracks available in
the editing suite and when we finally found one, it was shorter than the
our opening title sequence .
 I learnt to make a soundtrack longer by copying the song and pasting
it in order to gain the length needed but it interfered with our sequence
and we had to re-edit but in the end everything was okay.
POST-PRODUCTION
EVALUATION
 From the preliminary exercise through to our final product I
have learnt how to shoot films ,how to set up of cameras
properly, how to use a variety of shots,
 I also learnt about the importance the rule of thirds in
continuity editing, and how to edit , add sound effects and
transitions to a film.
 The difference between our preliminary exercise and final is
that we were given a storyline for the preliminary but we had to
come up with our own in the final piece.
POST-PRODUCTION
EVALUATION
 Also we were not able to add a soundtrack to our preliminary
exercise due to the limited time we were given.
 The only consistent problem that we faced during the entire
coursework was mainly about agreeing on what time to shoot
since we all had different schedules and it was difficult to agree
on a particular time.
 Also during our post production we ran over the time given
and we had to cut some of the shots out .Decisions about what
to omit also became a problem since we found all the shots
useful and important
 Generally speaking I have learnt almost everything that I
know about filming in media studies through our practical
aspects of the coursework .
 I qm now aware of the issues around filming and the need
to film a scene longer than necessary so that during editing
you will be able cut out of shots and still have enough shot in
a scene.
THANK YOU!!!
