2. • The Maya created one of the best known civilizations of ancient times
In what is now Mexico and Central America
• Probably began as former hunters & gatherers, began trading and
then became skillful farmers.
• Farms and populations thrived and grew. Cities were built with tall
pyramids (some still standing)
• Tall pyramids had steep stairs leading to the top where powerful
leaders were buried.
• Also built palaces for their ajaws or holy lords.

3. Peaceful folk or fighting warriors???
• Maya used to be considered peaceful people, it is now considered they
were actually very violent.
• Inscriptions on stonework show they went to war with neighbors,
fighting to protect not just their cities but for the prestige.
• They took prisoners who became their slaves.
• However, the Mayan empire thrived for nearly 2000 years.

4. The Legacy of the Maya
• Developed the concept of zero in mathematics
• Created the Mayan calendar (still used in Mayan communities today)
• Had own complex language and kept historical records
• Harvested rubber and made glue for book binding and cloth
• Discovered and cultivated the cocoa bean for chocolate!!
