Original:
“The Northern Lights”
There are times when the night sky glows with bands of
color. The bands may begin as cloud shapes and then
spread into a great arc across the entire sky. They may fall
in folds like a curtain drawn across the heavens. The lights
usually grow brighter, then suddenly dim. During this time
the sky glows with pale yellow, pink, green, violet, blue,
and red. These lights are called the Aurora Borealis. Some
people call them the Northern Lights. Scientists have been
watching them for hundreds of years. They are not quite
sure what causes them. In ancient people were afraid of
the Lights. They imagined that they saw fiery dragons in
the sky. Some even concluded that the heavens were on
fire.
Summary:
The Aurora Borealis, or Northern Lights,
are bands of color in the night sky.
Ancient people thought that these lights
were dragon on fire, and even modern
scientists are not sure what they are.
Practice:
• Alexander the Great was a successful ruler because his actions
created long lasting effects on cultures that continue to the
present day. One example of his legacy was the creation of a
Hellenistic society. Hellenism was the combination of Greek,
Persian, and Egyptian cultures. During this remarkable time
period, people were encouraged to pursue a formal education and
produce many different kinds of art. New forms of math, science,
and design made a great impact on society. If this new way of life
had not been as successful as it was, Alexander’s legacy would not
be as memorable and groundbreaking. Because he conquered
many countries and blended together many different cultures,
Alexander the Great is widely recognized for his achievements
and credited with being one of the greatest rulers in history
Steps of Synthesis:
• Find out the relevant issues
• Read widely on the topic
• Make notes in your own words
• Write an outline about the text
• Group the issues together
• Compare the content of various texts
• Find out general themes/ideas from all the texts
• Underline or highlight for your reference
• Fix the text according too logical order
• Draft paragraph using your notes
• Decide topic sentence and synthesis the information in a
paragraph
• DO not forget to mention the references
Example:
• The majority of smokers have wanted to stop smoking at one
or more times in their smoking history (Koh, Chen & Bailey,
2008; Lee 2010; Tanner & McKay, 2009). The addictive
nature of smoking has not deterred smokers in their
attempts to quit (Reid & Jones, 2009), and smokers have
attempted a wide range of methods to break their addiction.
While some have relied on willpower (Lee, 2010), others
have sought assistance from the pharmaceutical industry
(Reid & Jones, 2009; Tanner & McKay, 2009). Alternative
methods of giving up smoking are also being explored by
smokers. This is seen in recent studies reporting an increase
in the use of herbal and other complementary medicines to
address nicotine dependency (Koh, Chen & Bailey, 2008;
Lee, 2010; Reid & Jones, 2009). The effectiveness of these
methods in assisting smokers in their attempts to give up
smoking is investigated in the following sections of this
report.
