2. Pulse
The pulse is created by the heart forcing blood in to the arteries
This causes the artery walls to expand and contract as the blood
“PULSES” through
Important factors to consider regarding pulse:
1.Frequency
2.Rhythm
3.Quality

3. How to take the pulse
1.Locate an artery after making the animal calm
2.Apply gentle pressure against it with your fingers
3.Count the number of pulses for one full minute
4.Judge the rhythm and quality by varying the pressure applied
to the artery for another full minute

4. Different sites for taking pulse
Saphenous artery: This artery runs down the inside of
the hind leg
Radial artery: This artery runs distal and caudal between
the brachii and brachialis muscle
Submandibular artery

9. Respiration
Watch the goat’s side when she is calm and resting , for 60
seconds count one respiration for each time the goat’s side
rises and falls
You may place your hand on the animal’s flank
You may observe the animal’s breathing coming from the
nostrils

10. Temperature
1.Immobilize the goat
2.Lubricate the thermometer
3.Insert the thermometer a few inches inside the rectum
4.Slowly remove the thermometer
5.Clean the thermometer
