3. Organization is a system of coordinated action between
individuals that differ in interest, performance and knowledge
dimensions. -March and Simon(1958)
Organizational theories are series of academic perspectives that
seek to explain the multiplicity of organizational structure and
operating processes. – Nicholson (1995)
There are three stages in development of organizational
theories ; i. Classical Theories (1900-1930)
ii. Neoclassical Theories (1930-1960)
iii. Modern Theories (early 1960s)

4. Classical Theory – Human- Machine Relationship
-Did not continually attain required consequences in the
condition that ware emerge in the initial stage of 20th.
Neoclassical Theory – Human- Human Relationship
-Pay more consideration to the human issue and inspire the
humanize organization-Yang et, al (2013)
Modern Theory – Human Environment Relationship
- Classical and Neoclassical theories are unable to address
organizational change dimension thus modern theory of
organization evolved.

5. Modern theory of organization is a system which has
adapt to variation in its environment.
Modern theories are based on the concept that the
organization is an adaptive system which has to adjust to
changes in its environment.
It can be classified in three dimensions ;
i. System Approach
Ii. Contingency Approach
ii. Socio-Technical Approach

9. It considers organization as a system composed of many
subsystems.
It regards individual as complex being who can be motivated
in multitude of ways.
It is descriptive approach of studying organizations.
It is dynamic in interaction with the structure. It is constantly
subject to change as environment changes.
It is both macro and micro in its approach.
It ensures better flow of communication at all the levels and
effective control.

systems are relatively stable arrangements that can be adapted
to fit occasional changes in environmental demands.
