BASIC HAND TOOLS FOR WOODWORKING

Introduction
Basic technology is a subject that encompasses many technical and vocational area which can be
helpful to the learner to be become self-employed rather than a job seeker. Some of these areas include
the study of metalwork, electricity, woodworking, pottery etc. woodworking would be treated in this
material.
Woodworking is the activity of making items from wood, and includes cabinet making (Cabinetry and
Furniture), wood carving, joinery, carpentry, and woodturning. When working with wood as a
beginning, the learner must be familiar with the basic hand tools used in woodworking and their uses.

Used for cutting woods into different shapes.
This is usually done in order to join the pieces

9. G-CLAMP
Also referred to as C-clamp, it is a
type of clamp device typically used to
hold a wood or metal work piece and
often used in carpentry and welding
but not solely limited to use in these
areas.
10. WOOD PLANE
This is a tool for shaping wood
using muscle power (manual labor)
to force the cutting blade over the
wood surface. There are other
bigger planers which are electrically
controlled.
11. TRY-SQUARE
This is a woodworking or metalworking tool
used for marking and measuring a piece of
wood. It is used to measure accuracy of a
right-angle (90 degrees), to check for its
straightness or correspondence to a n
adjoining surface.
12. Sliding T gauge (Bevel gauge or false gauge)
Uses
Used for transferring angles to work piece.
13. Measuring tape
A measuring tape also referred to as
tape measure is a flexible ruler that is
used to measure distance. It is
calibrated in inches and feet. There
are two types; spring return pocket
tape measure and long tape measures.
The spring return pocket tape is
designed to measure one to fifteen
feet in length and ¼ to ¾ inches
across.
