Dr Fred. P. Brooks was born in
Durham ,North Carolina on 19
April 1931
His interest was in maps and
indexing of maps
He got married in 1956 with Nancy
Lee.
They have three children.
They are practicing Christianity
and active members of Inter

Brooks received his early education from
Greenville, North Carolina
He was graduated in Physics from Duke
University in 1953.
Dr.Fred received AM in 1953 and PhD in
1956 in the field of Applied Mathematics
(Computing) from Harvard University.
His PhD supervisor was Dr.Howard Aiken
a pioneer in computing who designed the
IBM Harvard Mark 1

After receiving his PhD, Brooks started working at IBM
Corporation, where he worked on many major projects.Some
of his major projects at IBM were:
IBM 7090 Stretch (First IBM system having 1500,000
Transistors)
IBM System/360.This model use 8-bit memory size instead of
6-bits.
IBM OS/360.An operating system for System/360
architecture systems.

After the completion of IBM System/360 and OS/360 Dr. Brooks
joined University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and started
Computer Science Department there.
He initiated the term Computer Architecture
He has contributed in Human Computer Interaction
Has also lead a research lab there where he done research in
different areas of Virtual Reality (VR) in the field of
three-dimensional graphics, virtual environments etc.
His research helped architectures to understand building
designs.
