The document discusses changes the author made in response to preliminary feedback on a magazine design project. Some key changes included: limiting fonts on the front cover; emphasizing text hierarchy through size and bolding; sticking to a strict font and color scheme on the contents page; ensuring text contrasted well with backgrounds; and developing a detailed shooting script when photographing models. The author focused on emphasizing text importance, improving readability, and avoiding overcrowding based on the previous feedback.
2. In response to the feedback given from the preliminary
task I have stuck to only two fonts on my front cover.
One is used for my logo and the other is used for the
text on my page. I ensured that the size I used
emphasised the importance on the page, I used the
same font for the pull quote as I did for the title but
put it in italic so readers could see that that was what
he said. In order to make the title stand out from the
rest I put it as the largest text on the page and put it in
bold. The sub-title (below the pull quote) is also in bold
but not as large as the title. The inside features on the
right hand side are also bold but are also a smaller
sized font than the title to again emphasise the
importance of the features on the front cover.
3. As I was creating my contents page I ensured I stuck to a
strict font and colour scheme. I only used one font and three
different effects which were italic, bold and semibold italic. I
used semibold italic for the descriptions on the right hand
side under the main titles and subtitles for the five different
categories. I done this to show the main category, then the
title of the story in the category and then the description of
the story. I made sure that the largest text on my contents
was the title and the subtitle, the title of the page being
“THIS WEEK” to let viewers know that this page shows what
is in this weeks magazine and the subtitle is “The moment
that…. Everyone got into a PALAVA” the reason this is the
second largest text is to show that this is the main story
within the magazine.
4. In this page I have used two different fonts, the
primary font is the title and text columns and the
secondary font is the red A that is used in the
background of the text. I stuck to two fonts so it
looks as neat as possible and made the A in the
background the largest bit of text on the page. This
is to show that A is the letter associated with this
magazine and so people know what magazine this
article is from. The second largest text on the page
is the title of the article, I also placed it at the top
of the page to show that this is the title of the
article.
5. In all conventions on the front cover I made it a priority to think of the
background, contrast of colours and the effects from the image. I ensured
that all text was readable on top of the plain white background I used. I
decided to remove the shadow from behind my models and use a plain
white background because you can choose stronger contrasting colours like
red and black which add more of an effect to the background and make the
colours look stronger and sharper in a way. I made sure the background I
was placing my image over contrasted from the image which is one reason
why I chose to convert my image to black and white because of the
increased contrast from the original image to the edited image on a white
background. I didn’t feel the need to add any fill colours because of the fact
I ensured that all images and text used contrasted to the background it
overlapped for example a bright red over a black or white background, grey
banners on top of a white back ground and black text over a white
background.
6. I used a plain white background for my contents page again, sticking
to the same colour scheme. All colours on this page were opposite
to the background that they were on top of for example, black text
over a white background, red text over a white background, white
text over a black fill, light red text over a black fill and light blue text
over a blank fill. I used white text over a black fill to vary colours in
the background and add to the fill of the background. This is to not
make my contents page so dull and make it more enjoyable to look
at. Down the right hand side where the categories are instead of
using black text titles I chose to put white text over a black fill and
put black titles for the stories in the category. This is to separate the
different categories because if they were all done with black titles
they would all give the impression they are under the same
category. I decided (for the main image in the top centre of the
page) to take out the background and add in the background of a
venue this is because I think it will look better for my models to be
seen as artists who actually work and do gigs.
7. On the left page I chose to use a white background and
stick to my magazines colour scheme (red, white and
black). On this page the text is the most important
because it is the only bit of content on the singular page
so I ensured that every word was readable by using a
strong contrast in opposite colours. The black text
worked over the red and white background because the
red I used was bright and the white is also bright. Black
is the darkest colour possible so in order to make every
word readable for my audience I used a black colour. For
the questions I used red and made sure that none of the
red got over the A as it is the same colour and would be
unreadable. My main image on the right I chose not to
take out the background because I believed the
silhouette added a good contrast and a bolder look to
my models.
8. In this shot I ensured that I had a white back drop for
my models. I kept the lighting quite low so the only
light would be the flash off the camera, this gives off
a more silvery effect and because I had planned to
convert it into a black and white image I thought it
would look better with the effect. The reason I put
my models in front of a white backdrop is so that it
would be easier for me to remove the background
and there are no reflections or anything that may
slyly sabotage my picture and put things in the image
that aren’t wanted.
9. I ensured that in all of my pictures that I shot my
models were looking at the camera. This makes it
easier to get a better shot and looks better on the
cover as the reader feels they are being addressed
directly by the models on the cover of the magazine. I
also took this picture in the same shoot with a white
backdrop for the same reason as my picture with a
front cover which is to avoid reflections etc. I also
found it easier to remove the background and
shadows from a white backdrop which is another
advantage to use the white backdrop.
10. Again in this shot my models are looking at the
camera. All three of the shots I used are similar so will
have similar descriptions, the only thing different
about the shots is that they are at different angles
and in some the camera is closer than the other. This
is the only image I didn’t remove the background and
shadow from because I believe it gave the image
more life and effect than that of what it would if I
would have taken out the background and shadow.
11. Looking back on feedback I made an in-depth
shooting script to follow when I was shooting
for my magazine.
12. As this image shows instead of breaking
conventions I couldn’t better I stuck to making my
logo compact and putting it traditionally in the top
left corner. I ensured my models were as close
together as possible without looking too close and
that they filled up as much of the cover as possible
without them overcrowding the page.
13. When I was creating my contents I took my feedback
into consideration, this gave me the idea to create and
index and change the colours of the numbers to a
different colour whilst sticking to the colour scheme.
Also on the right hand side of the page I have used
different colours for the page numbers than I have for
the titles whilst also sticking to the colour scheme
restriction. Instead of leaving too many spaces on my
contents page making it look dull and empty I have put
in as much information as possible without
overcrowding. That is in regards to the comment on my
preliminary task “there are too many spaces on the
contents page”.
