The narrator was always aware of what he was doing ,”There is
within me (and with sadness I have watched it in others) a knot
of cruelty borne by the stream of love, …”,” (…)that streak of

The narrator blames himself for Doodle's death, and that
he's extremely hard on himself. We also think that he really
loves Doodle, and did back then, too. He's coming at us
from the grief, guilt, and love.
