story for long and/or helps the reader
learn about the main character through
conflicts and interactions
*Husband- Monsieur Loisel
-shows the ugliness in Mme. Loisel’s
character (pg.211,212)
-helps Madame Loisel pay back debts of
necklace
-provides insight for the reader as to
who Mme. Loisel is as a character
“ ‘Oh, nothing. Only I don’t have an
evening dress and therefore I can’t
go to that affair. Give the card to
some friend at the office whose wife
can dress better than I can. He was
stunned”(211).
4. Madame Forestier
*Madame Forestier
-gives Mme. Loisel the necklace
-she gives Mme. Loisel a way to
have problems
“ ‘Could I borrow that, just that
and nothing else?’ ‘Why, of
course.’ She threw her arms
around her friend, kissed
warmly, and fled with her
treasure” (212).
5. Conflict: Man Vs. Society
-the protagonist is the main character,
or central character who we follow
throughout the entire story.
*Madame Loisel
-the antagonist is the character or force
acting against the main character that
they want to overcome.

-Madame Loisel wants to be in the upper
class, but she’s stuck in the middle class.

Static- doesn’t change throughout the story.
Overall the same person/ mindset as the beginning.

“But, sometimes, while her husband
was at work, she would sit near the
window and think of that long-ago
