Scabies
By: Kelsey
General Information
Scabies is a contagious, intensely itchy skin condition caused by a
burrowing mite.
The scientific name for scabies would be Sarcoptes scabiei. Another name
for scabies or Sarcoptic mange.
Scabies have been affecting people for the last 2,500 years.
The Host
Scabies are treated by killing the mites and their eggs with medication
that`s applied from the neck down and left on or eight hours. The
mites can also be killed using oral medications.
The symptoms are the skin gets blisters, bumps, dryness, rashes, and
redness. Also very common is itching. The itching is so intense it will
cause bleeding and scarring.
You will see scabies appearing most between the fingers, and behind the
knee is where it is most affected.
The Pathogenic Agent
● The mites over power the immune system and multiply at a quicker
rate than they would on a healthy person.
● My disease is not caused by a virus or bacteria it is caused by a mite
that is a living thing. It burrows itself in human skin and causes
irritation.
● The mites can live 48 to 72 hours after falling off a body.
Can anyone get it?
Anyone can get scabies but the people with a higher risk of having scabies
are:
Prison inmates
People in child care facilities
People who work or are in nursing homes.
Are those Scabies
It sometimes can be hard to determine if it`s scabies ,bug bites or just acne. This
is a photo to help you.
Crusted Scabies
Crusted Scabies is a very contagious variant of scabies in an individual is
infested by thousand or millions of mites living in the surface of the
skin.
Can Scabies be seen?
Most people with scabies only carry 10-15 mites. Each mite is less than a
half millimeters long. Which is hard to see with with a naked eye.
What carries it?
Wild animals carry it and so do pets. If you're out hunting or camping in
the woods you can get it. If you leave your dog outside and he comes
back, before you let him in the house make sure someone checks him
or look for signs of scabies.
